Students in grades 4-12 can get help online from expert tutors in Math, English, Social Studies and Science daily from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. For more information, or to use Live Homework Help, visit the County Library Website. “Free Wireless Internet Access” is available to library card holders with laptop computers. Bring your WiFi-capable laptop to the library to take advantage of wireless Internet access. From your home computer, with a free County Public Library card, you can have access to a variety of helpful services. Just apply at any one of the County’s 84 public libraries and have free access to full-text magazines, newspapers and other resources! The following CDC funded resources are available: Economic Redevelopment Loan Program – (323) 890-7044 Loans are available to eligible businesses for real estate, equipment, working capital, and business expansion that create low- and moderate-income jobs. Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) – (562) 347-4663 or (800) 731-4663 www.hacola.org The Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) provides rental assistance to eligible, low-income families to rent safe, decent, high-quality housing in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Home Improvement Grants and Loans – (323) 890-7239 Grants and low interest deferred loans are available to qualified residents for home improvement such as plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting, handicap access and more. Each program has its own income eligibility requirement. You may obtain additional information and an application form from the CDC website at www.lacdc.org. Homeownership Opportunity Program – (323) 890-7281 Through various resources, the Community Development Commission offers financial assistance with below market rate loan programs to first-time homebuyers. The CDC also participates in various events at different locations throughout Los Angeles County. To obtain event information in your area, you may call (323) 890-7034. The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program funds various Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). Below are the CDBG-funded CBOs currently providing services for residents of the Rowland Heights area: Housing Rights Center – (800) 477-5977 Educates the public on their rights to fair housing and working with the housing industry to ensure that existing fair housing laws are followed. Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority – Community Helpline: (877) 541-2525 or 24-hours a day contact: (800) 339-6993 or 2-1-1 Assists homeless individuals by contracting with several nonprofit organizations to provide 24-hour shelter, meals, transportation, case management and a variety of other appropriate services. Shelter Partnership – (213) 688-2188 Collects and distributes clothing and household items to homeless shelters through their Shelter Resource Bank. Veterans in Community Service – (562) 204-0541 The Handyworker Program provides minor home repairs and rehabilitation services to eligible low- and moderate-income households. Rio Hondo AIDS Project – (562) 698-3850 Provides a Case Management Program available to clients with HIV/AIDS, which includes counseling, food and groceries, transportation services, on-site mental health counseling, chiropractic services, medical and dental referrals, therapy, and social services. New Health and Human Services Web site! www.LACountyHelps.org The LACountyHelps.org Web site provides a safe, secure, confidential way for County residents to research and see if they are eligible for a variety of helpful services and benefits. Users will receive interactive contact information with links to local County offices which provide the services and driving directions to these offices. Services included on the site are: Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids child health and disability prevention program, in-home supportive services, child care resources and referral information, foster family recruitment, and adoption services. The site is available in both English and Spanish, with plans to expand to other languages in the near future. If you do not have Internet access at home, you may go to any Los Angeles County Public Library to obtain online access. Become a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) The CERT Program educates community members on disaster preparedness. Participants are trained in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
