Editor’s Foreword Most of the categories appearing in this series on literature and the arts have grown relatively undisturbed out of a long tradition, but this is hardly the case for lesbian literature. Although there have been early examples in ancient times, it has only been over the past century or so (and more particularly in the past few decades) that the genre has experienced explosive growth, resulting in an amazing profusion of works. In the past, lesbian literature has been hidden, repressed, suppressed, banned, and even burned. Thus the history of the literature can be understood only in the broader context of the movement of lesbian liberation, as well as the various literary trends and periods in which it emerged, from classical to postmodernist. This Historical Dictionary of Lesbian Literature therefore has to delve into the past to uncover earlier works and also scrutinize those publications that are both openly and guardedly lesbian in nature. The main focus then becomes the authors of works of lesbian literature and the often restrictive context in which these works were created. This latest historical dictionary was written by Meredith Miller, a Lesbian Avenger more than a decade ago and a student of women’s literature before that. After studying in the United States, she moved to Great Britain to work toward her Ph.D. and eventually to teach. At present, she teaches English literature and creative writing at the College of St. Mark and St. John in Plymouth, England. Her Feminism and the Lesbian Paperback in Postwar America is soon to be published. ix Jon Woronoff
