Rambling in the Aude
Le Pays de la Narbonnaise
In the Corbières Maritimes you have a view of the entire area: the network of lagoons, La
Clape, the Mediterranean and, further away, the Canigou mountain and the foothills of
the Massif Central.
The cliffs of Leucate on the southern coastline are beloved of deep sea divers for their
submarine richness and are topped by a plateau forged by stock-grazing and vines.
To the north, the views from the massif of La Clape alternate between the Mediterranean
Sea and the lagoons.
The variety in the scenery, the richness of the biodiversity and the constantly
changing light reveal all sorts of surprises in the islets, salt farms and fishing villages
on the lagoons. A major part of the route for migratory birds, the lagoons
are paradise for birdwatchers.
The Sentier du Golfe Antique is a reminder of the old Roman trading port on the
Mediterranean.
The Canal de la Robine crosses the Pays de la Narbonnaise from the Canal du Midi to Port
La Nouvelle. It entices you to take a walk or bike ride, starting in the shade of the plane
trees and then on to the lagoons, and will show you some unusual scenery.
To protect the delicate balance of human activity and biodiversity, the area is now a
Regional Nature Park.
The nature of the coastal area is very vulnerable. It is forbidden to camp, light fires, drive motor
vehicles or gather plants here. Help us protect them! ■
