Rambling in the Aude
Le Pays Lauragais
In the west of the Aude department, the
Lauragais is actually three micro-regions :
the Lauragais belt, the rounded hills of the
Piège and the foothills of the Montagne
Noire.
A historical axis of communication, the
Lauragais is crossed from west to east by the
Canal du Midi which takes you from lock to
lock at a leisurely pace to discover the Seuil
de Narouze, the watershed between the
Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
A land of sunshine and farming with a palette
of colours where green, russet, brown
and gold are harmoniously blended, with
gentle hills and rich plains where fields of
corn, oilseed rape and sunflowers alternate
with green pastures and rolling wooded
slopes, the Lauragais has scenery and history
which draw you onto the routes of
Romanesque art or windswept hills. ■
