THeCHAPeL deliberate, by design By The Revd Canon William G. Cliff Rector of the Collegiate Chapel of St. John the Evangelist, Chaplain to Huron University College and Anglican Chaplain to UWO. I hear the strangest things when I am working at my desk at Huron University College. I am not speaking just of strangeness of people’s comments, but also the assumptions that underlie the comment. For example, while working away in my office on one of those rare afternoons when my office was empty of students, two young women walked past my open door on their way out the front doors of the college. Their conversation was in full flight about plans for the weekend and who was going to be where, and what might happen when one suddenly said, with a level of attempted irony in her voice: “How Random is it that there is a Chapel here?” And I, unable to resist the quick reply, called out from my desk, “Not random at all, in fact it was built quite deliberately!” My humour was lost on the ladies in question. There is more to this story than meets the eye. The Chapel is a busy place, it has prominence in the building, it is marked by magnificent windows, a steeple, woodwork and wide open doors. To the eye of the “churched” it simply shouts “CHURCH” and identifies the College as connected to Church. But for some reason, the language of symbol and architecture which is so rich a part of our heritage is as lost on some folks as noticing the 40 or 50 instances of a Coca-Cola sign we see every day. They have become immune to the language which the church speaks, because the language of symbol they speak is one of brand names, product placement, popularity and focus group – not the language of architecture, art, light and transcendence. The Chapel is an opportunity – its strangeness to unchurched eyes is not the liability that some might think. The conversations I have had with young people in that space are wondrous examples of dialogue with the world: “What’s that?” pointing at the font, “What’s that?” pointing at the Altar, “What’s that?” pointing at the Oils in their Aumbry. Patiently answering these questions finally gets me to the territory where I can share the depth of the Gospel with them as they finally get to the question “Why?” Why be baptised? Why go to communion? Why kneel? Why Pray? Why sing hymns? Why believe? Then the conversation begins and the talk of brands and focus groups and marketing melts away as they begin to discover an understanding of the world that is not based on what they buy, how much they consume, or whether or not they have the “latest” of anything. We talk of love, of sacrifice, of sin and of redemption, and they begin to ask even more questions of “Why?”, and the people who sacrificed and gave the resources to see this place built are vindicated in their vision. The Chapel at Huron? Not Random at all. It was built quite deliberately. 31
