joanna newton [Armidale]
Jo moved to Armidale in 2008 to take up studies
in Rural Science at the University of New England.
Apart from her outstanding academic results
(University Medal in 2012), she has also gained
the New England Award, which recognises
individuals making significant contributions to
UNE and the wider Armidale community. Since
2009 Jo has been actively involved with the
Armidale branch of NSW Farmers and in 2012
was elected to their Young Farmers Council.
She is also involved in the Armidale and New
England Show Society hoping to strengthen ties
between the community and UNE by encouraging
more young people to get involved. For the last
two years Jo has spear-headed UNE’s Farming
Futures Project aiming to create a sustainable
agricultural industry and encourage young people
with an interest in agriculture. She was already
involved as Project Leader for Students in Free
Enterprise and Treasurer for the Rural Science
Undergraduate Society. In developing a strategic
plan for this project, Jo initiated a new committee
encompassing both student organisations. The
inaugural event in 2011 attended by over 100
students, academics and industry representatives
raised over $24 000 in sponsorship and in-kind
contributions from 18 organisations. The Farming
Futures Dinner resulted in attending companies
successfully employing UNE graduates they would
not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet.
In 2012, the project was expanded to include
an agricultural and agribusiness careers fair
alongside the dinner. More than 22 companies
participated in the Careers Fair and over 250
people attended the dinner. Jo has fantastic ideas
and the skill and enthusiasm to include others
and make things happen.
