Mark your calendars! The Vieques
Conservation and historical Trust
(VChT) and its board of directors
are pleased to announce the much
anticipated Vieques Pops 2011. The
W Retreat & Spa and General Manager,
Jonathan heath, are the Trust’s partner
in presenting this year’s Vieques Pops
on Saturday & Sunday, March 26-27,
2011 at 7:30pm. The evening begins
with pre-concert cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres at 6:30pm. The concert also
includes a champagne intermission.
Vieques Pops 2011 will feature the
indispensable talent of annette Bou and
Mireya Padin. The planning phase of
the concert started many months ago.
annette Bou has been busy assembling
a distinguished group of musicians. as
in the past, the concert will hold some
wonderful surprises and many highlights.
VChT is urging its membership and the general
public to purchase tickets in advance. Seating is
limited and sold out performances are expected.
Douglas Reese, VChT board member and producer
of the event has said, “this year, we will improve
how tickets are sold. We’ll have assigned seating
and seats will be sold on a first come, best available
basis. Tickets will go on sale on February 14,
2011 at 9am. Tickets can be purchased in person
at the VChT or by phone at 787-741-8850.”
The Vieques Pops concert is a benefit to fund
VChT’s education programs. Over the past two
years, The Vieques Pops has raised funds to support
the Marine Life exhibit, the Barbara Bernache
Baker Bioluminescent Room, and the award
winning ManTa program. ManTa has been lauded
in the united States, as well as in Puerto Rico, as a
one-of-a-kind educational program for its efforts
to educate young people about conservation and
preservation of natural resources in an innovative
and interactive way. now entering its 5th
year, ManTa has become the most sought-after
educational summer program by Viequense youth.

embarking on a landmark effort to produce the
first economic Outlook and Business Climate
Study uniquely for Vieques. in a series of
articles, a variety of topics will be explored that
have importance to our many diverse business
sectors as well as local residents and homeowners.
Within the next few weeks a survey will
be distributed to businesses across the island.
Results from the survey will be presented with
emerging economic data to present the clearest
picture yet of the economic outlook and business
potential on the island of Vieques. Please

La gente siempre se está preguntando ¿qué
pasa con los jóvenes de alcanzando el Éxito cuando
se van de Vieques? Bueno, la buena noticia
es que muchos de ellos continúan sus estudios,
reciben becas adicionales, persiguen nuevas áreas
de estudios, o regresan a Vieques para trabajar y
ganar dinero para luego regresar a sus estudios.
Le presentamos algunos ejemplos de aquellos de
los cuales nos sentimos orgullosos: “enrico” Juan
Martínez ganó medalla de oro y una beca de judo,
mientras estudia ingeniería en Mayaguez. ayaguez
Jessette Maldonado se casó recientemente y se
transfirió de universidad para adquirir su certificado
en diseño y redacción en computadoras. José
Luis Bayrón ha ejercido varios trabajos, mientras
estudia ciencias políticas
y leyes; Javier y Gerial
Camacho esperan asistir
a la universidad en los
estados unidos para estudiar
ingeniería eléctrica
y mecánica. Todos estos
estudiantes participaron
en el programa auspiciado
por alcanzando el
Éxito y estuvieron entre
los 45 estudiantes que
recibieron becas durante
los pasados 4 años.

en anunciar que fueron
galardonados con una propuesta de $30,000.00
del Gobierno de Puerto Rico y la universidad de
Mayaguez para un laboratorio de computadoras y
servicios técnicos bajo el programa.
Son los voluntarios como andy Plesser y Chuck
Tephner, quienes realmente hacen la diferencia
en las vidas de los estudiantes. el mes pasado,
andy entrevistó y grabó un gran grupo de nuestros
jóvenes que expresaron sus metas y los problemas
que han encontrado en alcanzarlas. La película
estará disponible para ser vista, bajo petición, una
vez esté finalizada.
en enero, Chuck Tephner, un retirado ejecutivo
publicitario, regresó para planificar y crear un
boletín el cual seria diseñado y producido por el
grupo, que incluiría noticias, opiniones, deportes,
entrevistas y cubriría eventos de la comunidad. Se
le asignaron tareas a diecisiete participantes. el
grupo acordó y expresó tres ideas básicas:
1. Quieren que la Isla sepa que a ellos les importa.
2 Reconocen que hay muchos problemas en
Vieques y quieren ser parte de la solución.
3. La misión de Alcanzando el Exito es capacitar-
los para que tengan éxito en la vida y que crean
que lo harán.
Los temas de Servicio Comunitario y Recaudación
de Fondos también fueron discutidos.
Los estudiantes quieren crear consciencia de la
necesidad en Vieques de unos mejores servicios
de salud y educativos. También quieren ayudar a
la gente de haiti, pidiéndole a los viequenses que
contribuyan con $2.00 por persona.
Por otro lado, una maestra en la Ciudad de nueva
York está planificando un evento de recaudación de
fondos para alcanzando el Éxito, el 4 de marzo en nY.

WHErE arE THEy nOW?
People are always asking what happens to
the kids from Reach for Success when they leave
Vieques? Well, the good news is that many of them
continue their studies, get additional scholarships,
pursue new areas of study, or come back
to Vieques to work and earn money to go back
to school. here are some examples of those who
make us proud: “enrique” Juan Martínez won a
gold medal and a judo scholarship while studying
engineering at Mayaguez. ayaguez Jessette
Maldonado recently got
married and is transferring
schools to get her
certificate in computer
drafting and design. Jose
Luis Byron has been
juggling several jobs while
studying political science
and law, while Javier and
Gerial Camacho are hoping
to go to graduate school
in the states to study
electrical and mechanical
engineering. These
students all participated
in the program sponsored
by Reach for Success and
were among the 45 students who were awarded
scholarships in the last 4 years.
This year, RFS is also proud to announce that
it was awarded a grant of $30,000 from the
Government of Puerto Rico and the university
of Mayaguez for a computer lab and technical
services to Reach for Success.
But it is volunteers like andy Plesser and Chuck
Tephner who really make a difference in the lives
of our students. Last month, andy interviewed and
videotaped a large group of our young people who
were vocal and articulate about their goals and
the problems they have encountered in achieving
them. The film will be available for viewing upon
request once it is completed.
in January, Chuck Tephner, a retired publishing
executive, returned to Reach to plan and create a
newsletter, which would be designed and produced
by the group, and would offer news, opinions,
sports, interviews, and cover community events.
Seventeen participants signed up for assignments.
The group agreed to and expressed three basic
thoughts:
1. They want the Island to know that they care
about it.
2. They recognize that there are many problems
in Vieques and they want to be part of the
solution.
3. The mission of Reach for Success is to
empower them to succeed in life and they
believe it will.
Community Service and Fundraising were also
discussed. The students want to develop an awareness
for the need for better health and educational
services in Vieques. They also want to try to help
the people in haiti by asking Viequenses to contribute
$2.00 per person.
Meanwhile, a teacher in nYC is planning a fundraiser
for Reach for Success on March 4th in nY.

The earth’s crust moves almost every day
in Vieques—it’s just the quakes are too
tiny to feel. This was not so on Christmas
Eve at 7:43 p.m. when we felt a quick
burst of shaking of the tectonic plates.
Though quite short, this was the most
intense earthquake we’ve felt in many a
year—walls visibly shook. The epicenter
of the 5.4 (on the Richter scale) earthquake
was in Aqua Buenas on the PR
mainland, with little damage registered.
The Caribbean is an active seismic zone,
but there has not been an historic quake
in PR since 1918. n

The W Retreat & Spa kicked off a new
concert series under the stars on January
22nd. Symmetry Live, the first of a
series of concerts and W happenings, brought
two well-know creatives together for a sultry
evening of art and music.
Performing on stage, was R&B star, three
time grammy winner Robin Thicke, who has
toured with Beyonce, Mary J Blige and Maxwell
and has written and produced for Michael Jackson,
Marc anthony, Pink and many others. his
new album title Sex Therapy:
The experience took on new
meaning in the in the ultrasensual
setting on the W
WetDeck situated between
the pool and Caribbean sea.
Performing on a side
stage Cuban american artist
David ‘LeBO’ Le Batard did
what he does best and recreated
the hip-hop beat on
canvas. Known for his vivid,
music inspired images, he
has painted at performances by the Dead, String
Cheese incident, Willie nelson, arturo Sandoval,
Sierra Leone’s Refugee all Stars and the Beastie
Boys. Lebo spent a month in residence at the
W creating images from the surroundings and
whatever captured his over-active imagination.
his paintings are on display in the lobby and
living room of the W.

On January 5th, 2011, our dance troop,
Vieques Baila performed a hindi dance on the plaza
called aaja nachle. This translates too, ‘Dance with
Me’. We are 6 girls from the ages of 5 to 14
and we all really enjoy to dance. Our teacher,
ivette Yolanda teaches many forms of dance
to all age groups. We are getting ready to

The beautiful beaches in Vieques
are well known to visitors, particularly
to the three nesting sea turtle
species (leatherback, hawksbill
and greens) that depend on the
island. Of this trio, it is the green
sea turtle that prefers nesting in
Vieques more than any other area
of the Puerto Rico archipelago. This
preference was evidenced in 2010
when they had a record year, 400+
nests or attempted nests, surpassing
all records in the past twenty
years. DneR, uSFWS and TiCaTOVe
presented a scientific poster and
gave a presentation as to the
status of sea turtles in Vieques at
the 3rd Puerto Rico herpetology
Symposium, held in October of last
year at the university of Puerto
Rico in arecibo.

que dependen de ellas (Tinglar,

Walking through the evening on Valentine’s Day
several years ago, following the music floating on
the breeze i found a crowd gathering outside the
Coliseo Municipal which was festooned in balloons,
twinkling lights, a huge heart made of palm fronds
and hibiscus. Peeking in the doors, i saw a group of youngsters dressed
in traditional Jibaro costumes performing to the delight of the crowd and
their proud parents. The lady selling tickets for the buffet invited me to join
the fiesta and i was amazed to find that this fantastic event was open to
all--and Free! The friendliness and enthusiasm of the participants was all
the encouragement i needed to join the party and get swept up in a night of
music, entertainment, feasting and some of the best dancing i’d ever seen.
“Vieques Baila” has become an annual tradition for me ever since.
Talking with volunteers, i discovered that the event wasn’t just a party,
but an outpouring of love to raise money for the children and community
of Vieques. every single aspect of the benefit had been donated by businesses
and individuals of our island. The vast buffet and delicious desserts
were cooked, baked, donated and served by many of our best eateries,
alongside individuals who brought their home-cooked specialties. even the
most humble colmados had given cases of water, pops, ice, or whatever
they could spare in these tough times. Lovely hostesses offered flowers
donated by florists, an array of gift baskets and art supplied by local
shops and artists graced a raffle table, and jewelry, cards and gift items
were available to buy for a special Valentine. a security patrol in bright tee
shirts donated by a popular Colmado helped manage safety and answer
questions. a happy group of envejecientes sat in places of honor at tables
decorated with candy, tableclothes and centerpieces made by schoolchildren
especially for the event.
asking about the impressive trophies, awesome mountain bikes, gift
certificates for spa days, airline tickets, dinners and activities, i learned
that they were to be the prizes for the main event of the evening, the dance
contests. From “The Vibrating Sprouts”--a group of diapered toddlers--to
a graceful older couple ballroom dancing, there were performances from
every age and culture. i was awestruck by the talent on our island and
wondered why some of the performers didn’t have national recognition.
Between dancing, musical entertainment included steel-drum players, the
Children’s Municipal band, a Reggaeton group and other superb musicians
who played while onlookers had a chance to learn the merengue or dance

Hace algunos años atrás, caminando en una noche de
San Valentín, siguiendo la música que flotaba en el
aire, encontré una multitud reunida en las afueras
del Coliseo Municipal, con globos, luces y un gran
corazón hecho de palmas e hibiscos. en las puertas
de entrada, observé a un grupo de jóvenes utilizando la vestimenta tradicional
del Jíbaro, realizando presentaciones para el deleite de la multitud
y sus orgullosos padres. La dama vendiendo las taquillas para el buffet
me invitó a unirme a la fiesta y estaba sorprendida de que este maravilloso
evento estaba abierto para todo el mundo – y Gratis. La amistad y el
entusiasmo de los participantes fue todo el aliento que necesitaba para
unirme a la fiesta y pasar una noche de música, entretenimiento, banquete
y algunos de los mejores bailes que jamás haya visto. Desde entonces,
“Vieques Baila” se ha convertido para mí en una tradición.
Mientras hablaba con los voluntarios, descubrí que el evento no era
sólo una fiesta, sino un derroche de amor para recaudar dinero para los
niños y la comunidad de Vieques. Todo lo relacionado al evento de recaudación,
había sido donado por los negocios y personas de nuestra isla. el
grandioso buffet y los deliciosos postres fueron cocinados, horneados,
donados y servidos por muchos de nuestros mejores restaurantes, junto
a otras personas que trajeron sus especialidades caseras. hasta los más
humildes colmados donaron cajas de agua, dulces, hielo o lo que tuvieran
disponible en estos tiempos difíciles. encantadoras anfitrionas regalaron
flores donadas por las floristerías, y arreglos de canastas de regalos y
arte donados por tiendas locales y artistas, engalanaron la mesa de la rifa,
donde también tenían disponible artículos de joyería y tarjetas postales
para comprarle a ese ser tan especial. un grupo de seguridad, llevando
brillantes camisetas donadas por un conocido Colmado, ayudó con la seguridad
del evento y a contestar preguntas. un feliz grupo de envejecientes
se sentó en lugares de honor, en mesas decoradas con dulces, manteles y
centros de mesa hechos especialmente para el evento por estudiantes de
nuestras escuelas.
Preguntando acerca de los impresionantes trofeos, bicicletas, certificados
de regalo para un spa, boletos de avión, cenas y actividades,
aprendí que éstos eran los premios para el evento principal de la noche,
la competencia de baile. estaba anonadada por el talento de nuestra isla
y me preguntaba por qué algunos de estos representantes no tenían
reconocimiento nacional. además de los bailes, el entretenimiento musical

with their dates. and in many cases, the “dates” were enthusiastic children
since the whole event is family-oriented and strollers were parked next to
wheelchairs.
Vincent Tozzi, who charmed the crowd with his incredible tap-dance
performance, seemed to be everywhere making sure that the benefit ran
smoothly. as emcee he introduced the many dignitaries who participated
throughout the night. he worked tirelessly behind the scenes with the
teams of volunteers who served to ensure the success of the event. i later
found that Vieques Baila was born of his inspiration and vision to encourage
the arts, bring together Viequense and non-Viequense residents in an
atmosphere of love, and benefit the children and worthy organizations that
need support on the island.
according to Vin, “in 2006, Vieques Baila began as a fund raiser for the
Vieques humane Society. Penny Miller, owner of Sea Gate hotel and one of
the original four founders of the VhS, asked me to join the VhS team after
considering all options, i decided to combine my life lessons of dance, food
and writing and create an event. i chose the Coliseo Municipal because i
realized that many Viequenses grew up familiar with the gym. Plus, it was
accessible to strollers and wheel chairs. Knowing that money in Vieques
is not plentiful, i decided to make it a free event. it was all important to me
that the event be geared toward Viequenses and non-Viequenses. i needed
to show solidarity between the two communities. i chose Valentine’s Day
simply because it is the day of love and this was going to be a loving event.”
he made a plan and went directly to alcaldeso Damaso, who said, “i
like what the humane Society does. i will give you everything you want (a
building, tables and chairs and security) and i will attend your event and
donate $5,000 to the VhS.” Then the hard work began. a group of volunteers
offered their help and began getting the word out about the benefit.
Donations came in, from a dollar at a time to generous offerings of food,
supplies, money and gifts. as people opened their hearts and wallets, the
event began to symbolize the true spirit of el Día de amor.
For the past two years a highlight of the night has been the appearance
of alcaldesa Delerme, who not only supports Vieques Baila with resources,
but is a fantastic dancer. She and her dance partner, Victor, captivate the
crowd with their performance and are especially adored by the youngsters
who flock to their table for pictures and a chance to meet our mayor in
person.
in the years since 2006, Vieques Baila has provided musical instruments,
music books, supplies and money to many various recipients. The
event is completely non-profit and every cent raised goes directly to helping
the children and worthy causes in Vieques, some of which are struggling
to continue to provide their services. Some of the recipients include:
2007 – Vieques humane Society, envejecientes
2008 – CeniM - Special needs Children; CeDePReChO - Child Care Center
2009 – Children’s Municipality Band; eric Ventura Morales (naSa); S.n.a.P-
Spay and neuter Program
2010 – incubadora; PaDi (Collectiva de Pescadores with Black Beard
Sports) Children’s Band; Reach for Success
2011 – Will Colon’s Steel Band - The islanders
additioinally, each year Vieques Baila invites over 30 elders for a special
free dinner and will always help the envejecientes, the humane Society,
S.n.a.P., incubadora and the Municipality Children’s Band. Just as importantly,
Vin adds, “For one day each year, we uplift the island of Vieques with
music and dance.”

with neighbors,

incluyó a la banda de acero, los Jóvenes de la Banda Municipal, un grupo de
Regaetón y otros excelentes músicos que tocaban mientras los espectadores
tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender el merengue o bailar con sus
parejas. en muchos casos, sus “parejas” eran los entusiastas jóvenes, ya
que todo el evento está enfocado en la familia y los coches estaban estacionados
al lado de las sillas de ruedas.
Vincent Tozzi, quien cautivó a la audiencia con su increíble presentación
del baile “tap”, parecía estar en todas partes, asegurándose de que el
evento corría sin problemas. Como maestro de ceremonias, presentó a
los dignatarios que participaron durante toda la noche. Trabajo incansablemente

abundante, decidí que el evento sería gratis. era de gran importancia que
el evento fuera orientado tanto para viequenses, como para no viequenses.
quería demostrar la solidaridad entre las dos comunidades. Seleccioné el
Día de San Valentín, simplemente porque es el día del amor y éste iba a ser
un evento de amor.”
el planificó y habló directamente con el ex alcalde Dámaso, quien dijo:
“Me gusta lo que la Sociedad Protectora hace. Le daré todo lo que quieran
(un local, mesas y sillas y seguridad) y asistiré al evento y haré un
donativo de $5,000 a la VhS.” Luego, comenzó el arduo trabajo. un grupo
de voluntarios ofreció su ayuda y comenzaron a anunciar el evento. Llegaron
las donaciones, desde un dólar hasta generosas ofertas de comida,
artículos, dinero y regalos. a medida que las personas abrían su corazón y

Por los pasados dos años, el momento culminante del evento ha sido
la aparición de la alcaldesa Delerme, quien no solo apoya a Vieques Baila
con recursos, sino que es una excelente bailarina. ella y su compañero de
baile, Víctor, cautivan al público con su presentación y son adorados, especialmente
por los jóvenes, quienes acuden a su mesa para tomarse fotos y
la oportunidad de conocer a nuestra alcaldesa en persona.
Desde el 2006, Vieques Baila ha donado instrumentos musicales,
libros de música, materiales y dinero a varios beneficiarios. el evento es
totalmente sin fines de lucro y cada centavo recaudado va directamente a
ayudar a los niños y a las causas dignas en Vieques, muchos de los cuales
hacen maravillas para continuar proveyendo sus servicios. algunos de los

importante es que, Vin añade: “una vez al año, enaltecemos a la isla de
Vieques con música y baile.”

en tablas con remos es uno
de los deportes de más
rápido crecimiento en el
mundo y está ganando rápida
popularidad en Puerto
Rico y en Vieques. Puede ser practicado en
casi todos los cuerpos de agua, por casi todas
las personas. Se puede practicar en los
rápidos de los ríos, como surf o en aguas
calmadas. algunos están practicando yoga
o pescando utilizando estas tablas.
el orígen de esta modalidad es altamente
debatido, pero muchos señalan
a Waikiki, hawaii como el lugar donde todo empezó. Los muchachos de la
playa de Waikiki fueron los primeros en ser grabados practicando surf de pie.
Laird hamilton, pionero del surf que vive en hawaii, fue el que propulsó lo que
es hoy día este deporte.
aunque el remo de pie requiere cierto equilibrio, puedes treparte y remar
en corto tiempo. Puedes ver niños de seis años remando junto a sus abuelos.
el deporte tiene muchos fanáticos, desde surfers de grandes olas hasta
corredores de rápidos, así como aquellos que disfrutan de los deportes en
aguas calmadas. en agua calmada, uno puede remar en contra del viento
para un ejercicio intenso o deslizarse con el viento y disfrutar del paseo.

en hawaii, los surfers de grandes olas están descubriendo una nueva
frontera con el “paddleboarding,” como un nuevo vehículo para atrapar olas
de tamaño gigantesco. en Montana, el Río Yellowstone, se ha convertido en
un nuevo reto, cuando intentas correr en los rápidos arriba de la tabla; aún en
Washington DC, la gente está descubriendo nuevas aventuras en una tabla
de remos en el Río Potomac, cuando pueden correr en las secciones de los
rápidos, surfear por las olas del río, o deslizarse suavemente por el río en sus
áreas más calmadas.
Las carreras de remos se están convirtiendo en un gran éxito y algunos
están usando las tablas de remos para navegar grandes distancias y crear
conciencia para el cáncer del seno y otras causas. el año pasado, el corredor
puertorriqueño de grandes olas ernie alvarez de aguadilla remó alrededor de
Puerto Rico, Culebra y Vieques para concientizar acerca de la contaminación
del plástico en nuestros océanos.
La abundancia de bahías tranquilas hace a Vieques un escenario perfecto
para la práctica de este deporte. Las aguas de color azul celeste ofrecen una
intensa experiencia oceánica. al estar de pie, tienes un ángulo perfecto para
ver la vida marina, mientras remas. Debido a que la isla va de este a oeste, es
ideal para remar con el viento, lo cual muchos amantes del SuP consideran
divertido. Puedes remar confortablemente usando tu cuerpo como una vela.
Jorge enrique, quien comenzó Vieques Paddleboarding y ofrece viajes
y equipo para todas las edades, dice: “usé por primera vez una tabla de
remos cuando llevé a mi hijo de tres años a surfear. Desde entonces, pensé
en traer el paddleboarding a Vieques porque es un gran deporte. Me gusta
navegar y surfear, y cuando me paro y remo, uso mi cuerpo como una vela.

popularity in Puerto Rico and
Vieques. it can be practiced in almost
any body of water by almost
anyone. You can do whitewater standup paddling
in rivers, paddleboard surfing, or flat water paddleboarding in calm water.
Some are even doing yoga and fishing using paddleboards.
The origin of stand up paddleboarding is still highly debated, but many
point to Waikiki, hawaii as the place where it all started. The Waikiki beach
boys were the first to be recorded paddle surfing standing up. Laird hamilton,
a surfing pioneer who lives in hawaii, was the one who propelled the
sport into what it is today.
although stand up paddling requires some balance, you can be up and
paddling in a short time. One can see six year old kids paddling along with
their grandparents. The sport has many fans, from big wave surfers to whitewater
riders as well as those who enjoy calm water sports. in calm water,
one can paddle against the wind for an intense workout or glide downwind
and enjoy the ride.
One of the most appealing elements of the sport is that it is ideal for
cross training because it builds core strength and balance. it is an amazing
feeling to be out there in the water enjoying the scenery while your body is
getting the workout it needs.
in hawaii, big wave surfers are discovering a new frontier with stand up
paddleboarding as a new vehicle to catch monster sized waves. in Montana,
Yellowstone River becomes a new challenge when you attempt to ride the
whitewater on top of a paddleboard; even in Washington D.C. people are finding
new adventures on a paddleboard on the Potomac River, where they can
ride the whitewater sections, surf the standing river waves, or gently glide
down the river in its calm sections.
Paddle races are becoming a great hit and some are using a stand up
paddleboard to navigate long distances and raise awareness for breast
cancer and other causes. Last year, Puerto Rican big wave rider ernie alvarez
from aguadilla paddled around Puerto Rico, Culebra and Vieques to raise
awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans.
The abundance of tranquil bays makes Vieques a perfect scenario for practicing
the sport. azure-colored waters offer an intense ocean experience.
By standing up, you have a perfect angle to see ocean life while paddling.
Because the island runs east to west, it is ideal for downwind paddling, which
many SuP lovers consider the most fun. You can paddle comfortably using
your body as a sail.
Jorge enrique, who started Vieques Paddleboarding and offers tours and
equipment to all ages says, “i first used a paddleboard when taking my three
year old surfing. Since then, i thought of bringing paddleboarding to Vieques
because it is such a great sport. i love sailing and surfing, and when i stand
up and paddle, i use my body as a sail. it’s pretty cool.” n

usualmente, el aire nocturno se impregna con la canción de
amor del Coquí. estos cantos de amor provienen de los
sacos vocales de estas especies. en Vieques se encuentran
tres especies; la más pequeña de estos anfibios nativos es el
Coquí, que suena como un silbido-su nombre en español significa
“Coqui Pitito.” Los cantos de las ranas que escuchamos son llamadas
de apareamiento del macho, primero para advertir a otros machos y luego
para atraer posibles hembras.
Coquí es el nombre dado a estas ranas por los Taínos. Por lo tanto, el
Coquí es un símbolo de Puerto Rico y una parte importante de la cultura de
nuestra isla.
La bióloga Francheska Ruiz, “Coquí Girl” como la llaman sus colegas, está
llevando a cabo estudios de ranas en el Refugio de Vieques. “el Coquí más
común en Vieques posee dos diferentes tipos de llamadas, el primero suena
como “Chu-rrí” y hace alusión a su nombre en español “Coquí Churrí” y el
segundo, suena como un carro con problemas de arranque: “Keh-keh-kehque”
– este es el sonido que hacen los machos para advertir a los otros que
se alejen. el Coquí Común de la isla grande es menos abundante en Vieques,
y se encuentra más en los lugares urbanos. Fue reintroducido a la isla colándose
en botes procedentes de la isla grande.”
Colectivamente, el sonido del Coquí produce los mismos niveles de
decibeles que una máquina de cortar grama, aunque mucho más dulce en
tono – para ser exactos, 5 tonos básicos. Los machos se posan a cantar en
las alturas y las ramas de los árboles.
Son más sonoros temprano en la tarde,
antes del anochecer y cuando está
húmedo, empleando el resto de la noche
para cazar y alimentarse de insectos–
son depredadores y amantes nocturnos,
quienes duermen durante el día.
Gente de aquí graba la música del
Coquí para oírla a la hora de dormir cuando viven fuera de su isla. algunos
turistas en hoteles han pedido que se baje el volumen de las grabaciones de
sonidos selváticos, sin saber que es un coro en vivo de machos Coquíes.
Los duelos de canto ocurren cuando otro macho desafía a un Coquí residente.
el perdedor es el primero en fallar la cadencia del ritmo, y se retira sin
pelear. “Los voluntarios comunitarios del grupo TiCaTOVe: José L. herrera,
erick Bermúdez, Maricelis Santos, Sasha Burgos, Luz quiñones y “Tato” Martínez
son de vital importancia al realizar censos en la isla y hasta ahora, han
encontrado que Vieques tiene una población saludable de anfibios” informó
Mike Barandiaran, Biólogo y administrador interino del Refugio de Vieques.
nuestras tres especies, en promedio, van desde 0.5 pulgadas (el Pitito)
hasta 2 pulgadas (el común) de largo de hocico a cloaca. Los dedos del Coquí
no tienen membranas, ya que no requieren estar en agua para vivir, reproducirse
o poner huevos, como la mayoría de las ranas. Los Coquíes ponen sus
huevos en las hojas y los machos se encargan de los huevos, una vez puestos.
Los Coquíes se saltan la etapa de renacuajo, ya que nacen con extremidades
como ranitas independientes. Se reproducen todo el año, pero sus canciones
de amor se oyen con más frecuencia durante la época lluviosa.
Como el nombre científico del género de los Coquíes – que se traduce en
“dedos libres,” muchos de nosotros nos sentimos con pies bailarines y libres
bajo el hechizo de la encantadora música nocturna de Vieques. n

The night air on Vieques is usually filled the with love song of the
Coquí. These love “cantos” come from the vocal sacks of these
species. Vieques has three species; the smallest of these native
amphibians is the Coquí that sounds like a whistle—it’s name
in Spanish translates as “Whistling Coqui.” The frog songs we
hear are male mating calls, first to warn off other males and then to attract
prospective females.
Coquí is the word given to these frogs by our native Taíno peoples. as
such, the Coquí is a symbol of Puerto Rico, and an important part of our
island culture.
Studying frogs on the Vieques Refuge is “Coquí Girl” as her colleagues call
biologist Francheska Ruiz. “The most common Coquí on Vieques has two
distinct calls, the first sounds like ‘Chu-rrí’ and hence its common name in
Spanish: “Coquí Churrí;” and the second sound likes a stalling car: ‘Keh-kehkeh-que’—this
is the sound males make to warn other males away. The
“common” Coquí of the mainland is less abundant in Vieques but is found
mostly in the urban areas. it was reintroduced here by hitchhiking itself on
boats from the mainland.”
Collectively, the Coquí sound produce the same level of decibels as a running
lawn mower, though much sweeter in tone—5 basic tones to be exact.
The males perch above the ground and
on tree limbs to sing. They are loudest
in the early evening, before dawn, and
when it is humid, with the rest of the
night spent on hunting and feeding on
insects—they are nocturnal predators
and lovers, who sleep during the day.
Locals are known to tape the Coquí
music and play it to go to sleep by when living away from home. Some tourists
in hotels have asked for the jungle sounds recordings to be turned down,
not realizing it is an all-male chorus of live Coquí.
Singing duels occur when another male challenges a resident Coquí. The
loser is the first to miss a beat of cadence, and leaves without a fight. “Community
volunteers from the group TiCaTOVe: Jose L herrera, erick Bermudez,
Maricelis Santos, Sasha Burgos, Luz quiñones and ‘Tato’ Martinez are
instrumental in conducting surveys on the island and so far have found that
Vieques has a healthy amphibian population” said Mike Barandiaran, Biologist
& acting Refuge Manager of the Vieques nWR.
Our three species, on average, range from 0.5 inches (the ‘Pitito’) to 2
inches (the common) in length from snout to vent. The Coquí’s toes and
fingers are web-less, as they do not require water to live in, reproduce or lay
their eggs, as most frogs. Coquís lay their eggs on leaves and males take
care of the eggs once laid. Coquís bypass the tadpole stage and emerge with
limbs as independent froglets. They reproduce year round, but it is said their
collective songs peak during the wet season.
Like the Coquís’ scientific genus name—which translates into “free
toes”—many of us humanoids feel especially foot loose and fancy free under
the spell of this enchanted night music of Vieques. n

hicieron su aparición luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Las potencias coloniales habían prohibido el “tamboo
bamboo”, otro instrumento indígena; por esto, los drones de
aceite desechados en Trinidad, pasaron a ser materiales de
expresión del irreprimible amor de los isleños por la música
y el baile. La leyenda cuenta que Simon Spree, de Trinidad, encontró una
abolladura en su zafacón durante la época del 1950. Mientras trataba de
forjarlo, descubrió que cada martillazo provocaba un sonido diferente, y
fue así como nacieron los drones. Debido a que el material de los drones
de basura es demasiado delgado, Simon experimentó con los drones de 55
galones que descartaban las fábricas de aceite.
alrededor de 1955 o 56, el ex alcalde Rivera fue quien trajo al maestro
original de St. Kitts o antigua. el Sr. Bob Kuhn fue quien consiguio los
drones para hacer una de las bandas la Wander Star. Durante los siguientes
dos años, el primer grupo de 14 jóvenes aprendió a cómo fabricar y a tocar
los drónes y su fama comenzó a expandirse a través de Puerto Rico. Mediante
contrataciones en la isla Grande y Culebra, continuaron llevando su
música y ganando dinero. De los muchachos originales, de 10-13 años, la
mayoría pasaron a convertirse en profesionales, pagando por sus estudios
gracias a los ingresos de la banda. Gracias a ingregos de la banda, Will Colon
estudio aviacion comercial y trabajo muchos años como piloto. Durante
la reunión anual de los infantes de Marina que sirvieron en Vieques, Dough
Mchoul, dueño La Lanchita y Presidente del “navy League” dijo: “Mirando
a través de antiguas fotos de los 50 y los 60, encontramos una vieja foto

unique to the Caribbean islands, steel drums made their
appearance after WW2. Colonial powers had banned the
“tamboo bamboos”--another indigenous instrument--and
the oil drums left as debris in Trinidad became materials for
expression of the islanders’ irrepressible love for music and
dance. Legend has it that Simon Spree, in Trinidad, found a
dent in his garbage can during the 1950’s. While trying to hammer it out, he
discovered that each hammer blow made a different sound, and the “pans”
were born. Since garbage cans were too thin a material, Simon next experimented
with the 55 gallon drums discarded by the oil factories.
around 1955 or 1956, former Mayor Rivera brought the first teacher to
Vieques from St. Kitts or antigua. The late Bob Kuhn helped to bring the drums
to form one of the original bands the Wander Star. Over the next two years
the first group of 14 youngsters learned how to manufacture and play the
pans, and their fame began to spread across Puerto Rico. Through engagements
on the Big island and Culebra, they continued to introduce their music
and earn money. Of the original boys, aged 10-13, most have gone on to
become professionals , paying for their education with the earnings from the
band. Thanks to these earnings, Will Colon studied aviation and worked for
many years as a pilot. During the annual reunion of Marines who served on
Vieques, Doug Mchoul owner La Lanchita and President of the navy League
said, “Looking through old photos of the 1950’s and ‘60s we found a very old
photo taken at Camp Garcia. it was of a steel band and when we looked more
closely, there was Will. at twelve years old.” a living connection to our history.
Will Colon is passionate about mentoring our young people. “I talk to
them about drugs and life and even teach them some French”. he commands
respect from his students and they practice twice a week for 3
hours after school. Though his current band has only been together for
5 months, their discipline and dedication shone through in their performance.
Will also offers free adult classes.

hablo acerca de las drogas y la vida, e incluso les enseño algo de francés.”
el pide respeto a sus estudiantes y éstos practican dos veces a la semana
por 3 horas, luego de clases. aunque su banda actual lleva solo 5 meses,
su disciplina y dedicación brillaron en su presentación. Will además, ofrece
clases gratis para los adultos.
“Los isleños” actualmente tienen 7 drones bajos, 3 drones dobles de
guitarra, 3 drones tenor, y dos drones doble de barítono, hechos por Will.
Con mucho orgullo, les colocan nombres conmemorando las bandas y la
gente que los han tocado: “Brute Force, The hell’s Gate Steel Band, Desperados,
PR Salsa”, entre otros. Will nos enseñó que algunos de los drones
han comenzado a agrietarse y nos dijo que debido al pobre material, deben
ser afinados varias veces al día, en lugar de una vez cada varios meses.
La fabricación de un drón de acero es una labor de amor y fuerza. el metal
debe ser forjado con un martillo, las notas creadas con fuego, y hay varios
fabricantes. Tristemente, habrá uno menos, ya que Will nos dijo que él no
puede seguir haciendo el trabajo debido al trabajo físico que envuelve crear
un drón. el costo de un nuevo drón fluctúa entre los $500
- $2,500 y si queremos continuar con esta tradición isleña,
debemos ayudar.
Vieques Baila (baile de recaudación de fondos el día de
St. Valentín) dedicará parte de sus recaudos a ayudar a “Los
isleños” con la compra de nuevos drones e indumentaria.
el “navy League” también aporta a esta causa. Dedicadas
madres y abuelas de estos jóvenes han comprado camisetas
y han cosido coloridas y tradicionales blusas y fajas. Tienen
la esperanza de que una apariencia profesional les ayude a
vender entradas de conciertos. Tocan gratis cuando son invitados
y han tocado en diferentes eventos durante las navidades,
especialmente para deleite de los envejecientes en el Centro
de envejecientes y para los niños en las escuelas locales.
Recientemente, tocaron en Mar azul y en Cayo Blanco. Cuando
escuchamos a estos jóvenes, antes de saberlo, nuestros pies se
empiezan a mover, las caderas a ondularse y eres transportado
por la alegría de la música.
estos siete jóvenes varones y la encantadora jovencita
continúan con la tradición que enriquece nuestras vidas
culturales y es parte del alma caribeña. Will Colón fomenta el legado y
rinde homenaje a los 14 jóvenes y al maestro, quienes pasaron por encima
de sus dificultades a través de las notas de su música y se convirtieron
en profesionales respetados. Cuando miré alrededor del salón de clases a
los jóvenes repartiéndonos besos luego de la presentación, me pregunté
“¿quién será el próximo Will Colón?”

noches, así como lo son el sol y el mar. nuestras tierras están vivas con
sonidos y ritmos que evocan tanto nuestro pasado, y nuestro sentido de
esperanza para el futuro. n

much a part of our days and nights as the sun and the sea.
“The islanders” currently have 7 bass pans, 3 double guitar pans, 3 tenor
pans, and 2 double baritone pans made by Will. They proudly sport names
commemorating the bands and people who’ve played them; “Brute Force,
The hell’s Gate Steel Band, Desperados, PR Salsa”, and more. Will showed
us where a few of the drums were starting to crack and said that due to the
poor materials they need to be tuned several times a day, rather than once
every few months. Making a steel drum is a labor of love and strength. The
metal must be hammered out with a sledge hammer, the notes set by fire,
and there are only a few manufacturers. Sadly, there will be one less as
Will said that he can no longer do the physical work involved in creating a
pan. The cost of a new drum is $500-$2,500 and if this island tradition is to
continue, support is needed.
Vieques Baila (the Valentine’s Day benefit dance) will be dedicating much
of its proceeds to helping “The islanders” buy new drums and costumes.
The navy League is also rallying behind the cause. Dedicated mothers and
grandmothers of these youth have purchased tee shirts and hand sewn

of the elders at the Centro
de envejecientes (center for
the handicapped) and the
children at local schools.
Recently they played at Mar
azul and at Cayo Blanco.
When listening to these
youngsters before you know
it, toes are tapping, hips
start wiggling, and you’re
transported by the joy of the
music.
These 7 young men and one
lovely young lady continue
to carry on a tradition that
enriches our cultural lives and is part of the soul of the Caribbean. Will Colón
fosters the legacy of, and pays tribute to, the original 14 youths and teacher
who rose above their difficult lives on the notes of their music and went on to
become respected professionals. as i looked around the schoolroom at the
young people blowing kisses to us after the performance, i wondered, “who will
be the next Will Colón?”
Music is the pulsing heartbeat of life in the Caribbean, as much a part
of our days and nights as the sun and the sea. Our lands are alive with
sounds and rhythms that evoke both our past and our sense of hope for
the future. n

La Magia de las Campanas
The Magic of Handbells
La Sociedad de Conciertos de Vieques (VCS) llevó a cabo su
primer evento musical el pasado 28 de diciembre de 2010,
en el W Retreat & Spa. El concierto, vendido a capacidad,
presentó al renombrado Conjunto Vivace de Aibonito, bajo
la dirección musical de Carlos E. Rivera y Zilka Figueroa.
Vivace, un coro de campanas de jóvenes polifónicos, interpretó
la música puertorriqueña tradicional de las fiestas navideñas. La Sociedad
de Conciertos y Vivace integraron a músicos invitados al programa,
incluyendo al violonchelista Rodrigo Correa Salas. Entre los aspectos más
significativos del programa se encontraron el Seis Chorreao con campanas,
sustituyendo a los instrumentos tradicionales como el
cuatro y la guitarra; un conmovedor Villancico Yaucano,
interpretado por Mireya Padín; y una impresionante
interpretación de Noche de Navidad por Nadia
Centeno. El Salón de Conferencias del W Retreat &
Spa se convirtió en una sala de conciertos. La calidad
acústica de la presentación fue excelente. El sonido
y las luces fueron profesionalmente realzados por IR
Sound DJ & Lighting.

La Sociedad de Conciertos de Vieques cree que la música es un
componente esencial de nuestra comunidad. Su misión es hacer que la
música esté disponible para Vieques y promover su importancia a través
de iniciativas de educación e instrucción. Cumpliendo con el componente
educativo establecido en su misión, la VCS llevó a cabo dos talleres para los
integrantes de la Banda Municipal de Vieques. Una sesión fue de viloín,
violonchelo y contrabajo con el maestro Rodrigo Correa-Salas, y la otra
con el Conjunto Vivace. La de Vivace fue muy animada, ya que ambos
grupos interactuaron y aprendieron unos de otros. Además de compartir la
pasión por la música, resultó que la juventud de Aibonito y Vieques tienen
algo en común: ambos se sienten algo apartados del resto de PR – Vieques
por ser una isla y Aibonito debido a su alta localización geográfica en la
Cordillera Central. n

The Vieques Concert Society (VCS) held its first music
event on December 28th at the W Retreat and Spa. The
sold out concert featured Aibonito’s world renowned Vivace
Ensemble under the musical direction of Carlos E.
Rivera and Zilka Figueroa. A youth polyphonic handbell
choir, Vivace’s concert program showcased the Puerto
Rican holiday music tradition. The VCS and Vivace integrated guest musicians
to the program including cellist Rodrigo Correa-Salas. Among the
highlights of the program were a Seis Chorreao with handbells substituting
for the typical cuatro and guitar instruments; a heartwarming Villancico
Yaucano, song by Mireya Padin; and a stunning
rendition of Noche de Navidad song by Vivace’s
own Nadia Centeno. The W Retreat and Spa’s
Conference room was turned into an effective concert
hall. The acoustic quality of the presentation
was pristine. The Sound and lights were professionally
enhanced by IR Sound DJ & Lighting.
Vivace is dedicated to the education and artistic
performance of the art of handbell ringing in
Puerto Rico. The group is recognized as one of the
best handbell ensembles in the world. Visit them

The VCS believes music is an essential component

that Aibonito and Vieques youth have something in common: both feel
somewhat isolated from the rest of PR—Vieques for being an offshore
island and Aibonito because of its high geographic location in the central

Vieques Concert Society’s (VCS) mission is to make music available
to Vieques, and to promote its importance through education
and instruction initiatives for the island’s youth. As Music
enriches our community and teaches important lessons such
as discipline, dedication, respect and self-esteem, our goal is to
provide these opportunities via workshops free of charge to all
children and youth of Vieques.

FEBUARY 21ST: A workshop for teachers and parents of children
ages 2-8 yrs. Focuses on Children’s Songs and Chant–Games of
the Puertorican Folklore, by Latin Grammy Award nominee Griselle
Bou de Blanco at the Fort Conde De Mirasol, 9:30am-12:30pm.
The following workshops/events will be held in the
coming months:
• Weekly guitar and ‘’cuatro’’ lessons
• Monthly bass, cello and violin lessons for the Municipal Band
• History of the Symphonic Orchestra
• Native South American Instruments
• Music of the Movies (soundtracks)
