Interactive Session for discussion on various<br />

issues for improvement <strong>of</strong> zoos<br />

<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Authority</strong><br />

l The <strong>Authority</strong> was established in 1992 to restrain the mushrooming <strong>of</strong> illplanned<br />

zoos in the country as well overseeing the management <strong>of</strong> zoos and<br />

provide them necessary technical and other inputs to come upto the desired<br />

level <strong>of</strong> the management.<br />

Recognized <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong> in the country<br />

l There are 159 recognized zoos in the country. Out <strong>of</strong> which, 19 are large, 12<br />

medium, 27 small and 101 mini categories zoos.<br />

Improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong><br />

l The <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Authority</strong> is providing financial assistance for improvement<br />

<strong>of</strong> recognized public sector zoos in the country.<br />

l Creation <strong>of</strong> appropriate animal housing, veterinary facilities, research/ training<br />

related activities are being financed on 100% basis.<br />

l Whereas expenditure on infrastructure development is being shared with the<br />

zoo operators on 50:50 basis.<br />

Improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong><br />

l All proposals for creation <strong>of</strong> new animal houses are first discussed in the<br />

Sub-Committee on <strong>Zoo</strong> Designing around second half <strong>of</strong> June every year.<br />

l The financial estimates <strong>of</strong> the approved designs are placed in the Technical<br />

Committee meeting around the month <strong>of</strong> July for financial approval.<br />

Procedure to be followed<br />

l The zoos are requested to submit their annual plan <strong>of</strong> operation within first<br />

quarter <strong>of</strong> the financial year i.e. within June along with the utilization certificate<br />

for funds already been released to the <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong>.<br />

l The new designs will be discussed in the Sub-Committee on <strong>Zoo</strong> Designing<br />

and all other proposals for financial assistance will be taken up in the Technical<br />

Committee in the month <strong>of</strong> July.<br />

l The <strong>Authority</strong> will try to release the funds within July/ August to the <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong>.<br />

l All the cases where <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Authority</strong> is providing 100% grants, 50% <strong>of</strong><br />

the funds will be released along with copy <strong>of</strong> the Memorandum <strong>of</strong><br />

Understanding (MoU) for the same and the balance amount will be released<br />

after receipt <strong>of</strong> the duly signed MoU.<br />

l In cases where <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Authority</strong> is sharing funds on 50:50 basis.<br />

even the first instalment <strong>of</strong> funds will be released only on receipt <strong>of</strong> duly<br />

signed MoU.<br />
