110 VOSA Tulbaghia luebbertiana Engler and Krause in Engl. Bot. Jahrb. 45: 145 (1910). Described from Nabibia but the type specimen seen, Luebbert 44 (M!), is out of flower. Tulbaghia karasbergensis Glover in Ann. Bolus Herb. 1: 104 (1915). Although he has seen no material, Merxmueller, in Prod. Fl. Sudwestafrica of 1969, considers it a good species. APPENDIX II Taxonomy key to the genus Tulbaghia Tulbaghia monantha Engl. & Gilg. in Warb. Kunene-Zambesi Exp. 192 (1903). The species has been described as from Cabindere in Angola. The only specimen seen, Baum 351 (M!), in my opinion, cannot be taken as the basis of a distinct species. Tulbaghia pauciflora Baker in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. (1892). Described as from the Cape but no specimen is indicated.
CYTOTAXONOMY OF THE GENUS TULBAGHIA 111 Acknowledgements — I wish to thank the very many friends from various parts of the world, but especially from Africa, for their kindness and help during the collection and the cultivation of the material used in this study. I wish also to remember with deep gratitude, as the most helpful and knowledgeable colleagues and friends, the late Frank White M.A. for his general help in the taxonomic treatment, the late Prof. Cyril D. Darlington F.R.S. for his interest in my work, the late Prof. R.B. Rycroft Ph.D. and all the past and present Staff of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden for making available lodgings, transport and other essential facilities. I am very grateful too to Dr. David Mogford, D.Phil, and to Mr. Kenneth Burras, M.A., former Superintendent of the Botanic Garden of Oxford, for their help during some of the most important plant collecting trips.
