T H E F U T U R E O F V E N I C E & I T S L AG O O N The UNESCO Venice Office is coordinating a cross sectoral and multi-stakeholders activity to provide scientific expertise to the City of Venice and the local authorities visit us at http://www.unesco.org/venice A consultation process involving all relevant stakeholders will be organized as a World Café on the Future of Venice and its Lagoon. This participatory approach will identify concrete actions to be included in the management plan under preparation. The World Café process is a simple yet innovative methodology essential for establishing and exchanging information for discussions. The stakeholders “converse” amongst themselves and “…between groups, cross-pollinate ideas, and discover new insights into the questions or issues that are most important to the issue.” READ MORE... U N E SCOVENICE QUARTE RLY N E WS LE T TE R The aim is to develop a shared vision for the protection and sustainable future of Venice and its Lagoon (WH Site 1987). This common vision will take into account and integrate all environmental, economic and social issues into a model that can be adapted by other WH Sites in the SEE and Mediterranean Region. WORLD CAFÉ ON THE FUTURE OF VENICE AND ITS LAGOON WEB-BASED KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM ON VENICE & ITS LAGOON © UNESCO/A.MANCUSO Workspaces will be created so to allow users to interact on the main issues of the WH Management Plan so to elaborate concrete proposals for action. A web-based GIS system for the sharing of knowledge/data/ maps has been relaunched. It is an interactive tool that will facilitate the consensus building of this WH site. Its interface has been re-designed. New functionalities for its management and consultation have been incorporated. Thanks to the use of web map services (WMS) and web feature service (WFS), diffused databases and information systems on Venice and its Lagoon, are easily accessible. HEADLINES N E W S U N E SCOVENICE QUARTE RLY N E WS LE T TE R V E N I C E I N P E R I L C O N F E R E N C E Venice Lagoon Model to be adapted in the SEE Region Referring to the extensive network of the WH sites in the SEE Region that are also coastal cities (Venice, Dubrovnik, Split, Kotor, Butrint, Ohrid, Corfù), the Venice Office is planning to convene a special workshop dedicated to the common challenges (sea level rising and the protection of historical cities, growth of tourism flows, rapid urbanization processes, etc.) these sites are facing. By identifying innovative ways to address shared problems the elaboration of a WH site Management Plan to be implemented. This specific activity would also contribute to a regional initiative on “risk preparedness” related to the impacts of climate change. Workshop on Land Use Planning & Management for Venice & its Lagoon Several planning exercises are being developed on Venice and its Lagoon by relevant authorities (Veneto Region, Venice Province, Municipality of Venice OLD CITY OF KOTOR, MONTENEGRO and the Venice Water Authority - Magistrato alle Acque), dealing with matters of landscape, lagoon morphology, islands and transportation. Additional proposals will be analyzed so to elaborate specific to be included in the WH site management plan. I S S U E 2 • A P R I L - J U N E 2 010 | 3 Why the health of the Venice Lagoon has implications for the City’s Heritage The “Venice in Peril” Private Committee for the Safeguarding of Venice organized an international discussion meeting oriented towards an integrated assessment of the City and its Lagoon’s deteriorating physical and ecological integrity. The discussions took place on 21 May 2010 at the UNESCO Venice Office. A position paper highlighting the interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and policy options will be drafted. A final version will be presented to a broad range of policy makers, opinion leaders and stakeholders in autumn 2010. In collaboration with the University of Cambridge, studies related to the Lagoon’s morphology and hydrodynamics, trends in land subsidence and sea level rising, and the forms of degradation of the urban fabric associated with human activities, was co-published.
