sikker på et stort behov for tryksager, flyttede det lille<br />

firma til Vestergade i Odense. På dette tidspunkt og i<br />

mange år fremover var <strong>PIB</strong> i lige så høj grad en almindelig<br />

klichefabrik som et bureau.<br />

Personalet bestod nu af en ætser, en fotograf, to<br />

unge lærlinge og sælgeren Peyrath, der alle boede hos<br />

den nu nygifte Hjalmar Carlsen, inklusive Peyraths<br />

kone og børn.<br />

Da Landmandsforsamlingen var forbi, var det også<br />

slut med arbejdet, og man så sig om efter nye muligheder.<br />

Løsningen var at sælge føljetoner og i <strong>PIB</strong>s<br />

blad “Redaktionssekretæren”, der blev sendt til alle<br />

aviser, tilbød man nu fortsatte romaner.<br />

Ideen var god, men den tekniske kvalitet lod meget<br />

tilbage at ønske, for der var ikke råd til ordentligt<br />

stereotypi-metal. I stedet købte man gammelt bly og<br />

tin fra vinkapsler og te-kasser af Odenses<br />

jernhandlere og smeltede det sammen.<br />

Resultatet var ikke altid lige heldigt, og <strong>PIB</strong> fik<br />

pludselig skarp konkurrence af en sønderjysk<br />

<strong>PIB</strong> <strong>COPENHAGEN</strong> <strong>·</strong> <strong>100</strong><br />

<strong>PIB</strong>’s work in connection with it, so the company<br />

started looking around for new opportunities. The<br />

solution they settled on was to begin selling serials.<br />

Redaktionssekretæren [Managing Editor] — <strong>PIB</strong>’s own<br />

magazine that was sent out to all the newspapers —<br />

now offered the various editors novels in continued<br />

form.<br />

The idea was good, but the technical quality of the<br />

printing plates left much to be desired because there<br />

was not enough money in the budget to buy goodquality<br />

stereotype metal. Instead, <strong>PIB</strong> bought lead and<br />

tin winebottle caps and tea boxes from Odense’s<br />

scrapmetal dealers, and smelted them together.<br />

The result was not always fortunate, and <strong>PIB</strong> was<br />

suddenly faced with strong competition from a South<br />

Jutland editor, Heinrich Matzen, who used a good<br />

stereotype supplier.<br />

That <strong>PIB</strong> nevertheless came out on top was due to<br />

the facts that newspapers who went with <strong>PIB</strong> got<br />

illustrations with their serials, and that <strong>PIB</strong> could offer<br />

better novels — mainly from foreign sources. There<br />
