Easter continues… 

The Celebration of the Great 50 Days 

We think of Easter as a day. Now that 8 April has passed, put away the eggs, take away the lilies. 

Next it will be Mother’s Day. Our forebears in the faith have given us much more than one day. 

Easter is a season. A Great Fifty Days! Literally, a week of weeks – 49 days (the perfect number 

seven multiplied by its own perfection) and adding on Pentecost for good measure. 

What we commemorate before Easter is what we experience in this life; 

what we celebrate after Easter points to something we do not yet possess. 

This is why we keep the first season with fasting and prayer; 

but now the fast is over and we devote the present season to praise. 

Such is the meaning of the Alleluia we sing. 

We are praising God now, assembled as we are here in church, 

but when we go our various ways again, it seems as if we cease to praise God. 

But provided we do not cease to live a good life, we shall always be praising God. 

You cease to praise God only when you swerve from justice 

and from what is pleasing to God. Augustine, Fourth Century 

Easter is a season, not a day. Easter is a state of mind, not a passing celebration. To be alive in 

Christ means to work continually and tirelessly in every aspect of our lives to bring new life to a 

weary world. 

Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

PREPARING FOR SUMMER 

Ordinary Time – from the Day after Pentecost until Christ the King 

For a few weeks in January and February, and then all through summer and fall, the church is in Ordinary 

Time. Ordinary comes from the word ordinal and means “counted.” In other words, each of the 

weeks has a number (for example, First Sunday after Pentecost). 

During Ordinary Time, the Sunday Gospels follow Jesus from story to story in Matthew, Mark, or Luke. 

Each of these Gospel accounts is read for one year in the church’s three-year cycle of Sunday readings. In 

the year 2007 we read the Gospel according to Luke, with its many stories of how Jesus liberates people 

as He bestows wholeness and health as people are healed, fed, welcomed into community, enlightened, 

relieved of shame, and valued as God’s own creatures. 

The careful participant in worship, small group Bible study (see the Luke for Everyone notice on page 

13), and private devotion will note that the Gospel readings are filled with unexpected surprises: a 

young man is raised from the dead, a prostitute appears at a banquet of religiously devout males, a man 

possessed of evil spirits is cured, ordinary disciples are sent to heal the sick, and a Samaritan outsider 

unexpectedly cares for a Jewish insider who is ignored by his own religious officials. As we hear these 

stories with open hearts, the Spirit will also surprise and upset us, and maybe even overturn some of 

our own notions of what constitutes sincere and faithful expressions of trust in God. How extraordinary 

Ordinary Time will be this summer!

To assist you and your extended families in planning, the Sacrament of Holy 

Baptism has been scheduled for the following celebration times in 2007: 

+Day of Pentecost Sunday, 27 May 

+All Saints Sunday, 4 November 

If you are contemplating Baptism for yourself or a member of your family, 

please initiate that process by speaking with Pastor Barich who will be very 

happy to counsel with you and begin the preparations for this most important 

means of God’s grace.

Praying Through 

The Church 

BECAUSE WE ARE A CHURCH FAMILY, a community of 

faith, we have a concern for one another, a concern that is 

expressed on Sunday mornings, as we pray for members 

of our church family ‘by name.’ 

WE PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER remembering the words of St. Paul the Apostle to Timothy, “I 

urge, then first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone…” 

and the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; 

knock and the door will be opened to you.” 

WE ALSO ENCOURAGE members and friends of the congregation to make their prayer requests, 

births, illnesses, deaths, anniversaries, special occasions for intercession or thanksgiving, known to 

the pastor, preferably before the Sunday morning services, but in cases of emergency, right up to 

service time.

though not ‘officially’ members of our congregation, they are certainly included in our 

concern.

Faith is not Trivial 

Many are asking, “What does a Harrison Ford film, 

aerobic athletic shoes, and a 747 have in common 

with Prayer Force One”? Well, when you participate 

in Prayer Force One, you will look good, keep in 

shape and fly high. 

Look good! 

• The goal of this new prayer outreach team is 

to point to Christ. We know that through 

Christ’s suffering and death we are now able 

to access God our Father through prayer. Both 

recipients of prayer and those praying look and 

feel better when focused on the Savior. 

Faith in Shape! 

• Have you ever felt uncomfortable with your 

faith? Unsure how to do what you know is 

right? Afraid to offer prayer to someone in 

need? Afraid to ask someone to pray with you? 

It’s ok to let those days go. Prayer Force One 

is challenging you to get your faith in shape. 

Start good prayer practices, by practicing 

prayer. Combat the challenge of growing 

healthy in prayer by joining in prayer one 

Saturday a month. 

Fly High! 

• Pray for the prayer outreach team – Prayer 

Force One 

• Bring your prayer requests to the team. One 

Saturday a month the Prayer Force One 

prayer team will be at the church to receive 

your prayer requests by phone, written request 

or in person. Please remember that they are 

here to serve you and want to share in your 

thoughts and concerns. 

• Expect results. God hears prayer. God wants 

us to pray. When our faith-life becomes 

healthy, so does our entire life … lift your 

prayer concerns, thanksgiving and praise to

two beach volleyball teams that 

will play at Oak Street Beach on

a blanket and meet us on the 

beach. The schedule begins
