Community Based Programs Offer Specialized Career-Technical Opportunities
West Shore‟s Community Based Training programs are housed at Bonne Bell, the Airport Marriott, and Rae-Ann
Suburban Nursing Facility. A personalized program is designed for each student. The goal of the community based
programs is for students to gain experience in specific skills and interest areas
for future employment. In addition to developing job specific skills, students
are also educated on the importance of positive employee attributes including: dependability, following
directions, positive communication, problem solving, organization, professional appearance, and
effective interaction with employees and customers. Outstanding Student and Work Ethic awards
winner Sean Hanna says of his Marriott program, “I love working here. The people are nice and fun to
work with. I love my job.” Bonne Bell student James Henry agrees, “I like working here „cause that will
lead me to getting a job!” and Gina LuBrant describes her position at Rae Ann as “Fun and amazing...I am noticing that my kitchen skills are
progressing.” West Shore appreciates the support and opportunities provided to our students through corporate partnerships with Bonne Bell, the
Airport Marriott, and Rae-Ann Suburban Nursing.

Mr. Z Expects Industry Level
Commitment & Professionalism
Automotive Technology instructor Mike “Mr. Z” Szittai creates a classroom
environment that mirrors a real-world auto shop. This two-year ASE
(Automotive Service Excellence) certified program prepares students to earn
their ASE certification to become Automotive Technicians. Students also have an opportunity to earn college
credit. Upon arriving at class, students change into their uniforms and prepare for a day that includes hands-on classroom and lab instruction in
automotive diagnostics and repair for: brakes, engines, steering, lifts, suspension, drive train components, balancing & alignment equipment, and
computer systems. Students work under Mr. Z‟s direction to repair community and Lakewood City Schools vehicles. First-rate customer service
and satisfaction are expected. Students are also exposed to the automotive industry through field trips to the Greater Cleveland Auto Show and a
senior year assignment to apply for technician positions at local auto dealers, shops, and stores. Mr. Z‟s approach translates into success. Senior
Robert Smith shares, “This program is about learning, thinking, and making the right decision. I have learned more than I ever imagined about the
auto industry. If we had Auto 3…I would take it!” Current Auto Tech students are employed at GT Brothers in Lakewood, George‟s Auto at
Kamm‟s Corners, and Gold Class Motors in Parma. Auto Technology alumni include two- and four-year college graduates, ASE Certified Mechanics,
and career training program graduates from WyoTech and other industry specific institutions. Charles Sposit, 2010 West Shore Auto
Technology alumnus, credits the program for being hired at Lube Stop after graduation, “What I learned in Auto Tech helped me out a lot to get my
job and help me move up in the company.” In his current position, Charles changes oil, flushes transmission, coolant, and power steering systems,
along with rotating tires. In Auto Tech hands-on learning equals real-world success!
Service Occupations Training Marks Its 27th Year
The Service Occupations Training (SOT) program provides students with the experience of a real-world working
environment to support the goal of facilitating a student‟s ability to obtain competitive employment upon graduation. This
innovative program provides diverse learning opportunities utilizing a single training site at Lakewood Hospital. This year,
the students are training in housekeeping, food service, the storeroom, linen room, mail room, central supply room,
volunteer transport, skilled nursing, as well as clerical support in ambulatory surgery and the pain management office. In
these departments, the students work directly with hospital staff members who provide instruction in basic skills for each
department. SOT instructor Mrs. Patricia Hunter believes “Much of the success of Service Occupations Training can be credited to the efforts
of hospital employee mentors. The support and guidance of these mentors facilitates our students success.” Lakewood Hospital mentors also
act as role models letting students see first-hand the personal qualities they will need in order to be successful on the job. Lola Ozanich , an
SOT student commented, “I think SOT will help me in the future get the job I want because of the things I learned here.” Each Spring SOT
students host an appreciation breakfast to recognize and honor hospital mentors serving as their “partners in education.” SOT alumni are
currently employed at the Lakewood Senior Health Campus, McDonalds, and Oatey Manufacturing. West Shore sincerely appreciates SOT‟s
educational partnership with Lakewood Hospital. We would like to thank Mrs. Hunter for her contributions to this story.
Networking Students Visit Cisco Systems
“The jobs you will apply for have not been invented yet. The future of networking is bright and there are many
opportunities available to you if you work hard and continue your education.” This was one of the many
valuable career development recommendations shared by Rich Boehm, Systems Engineer, and Mike Hawkins,
PCB/CAD Applications Engineer, during our field trip to Cisco Systems in Richfield, Ohio. Wireless research for the entire Cisco company is
done at this location. In addition to career guidance, students also visited networking and antenna development labs and participated in a Cisco
Telepresence video conference. This hands-on, industry led experience highlights the benefit of a career-technical education and the many
opportunities available to students as they prepare for college. Students enrolled in the two-year Networking Cisco program learn the
latest industry networking standards through an online curriculum that includes network design, set-up, hardware, maintenance, and
administration. Upon completion, students are prepared to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) exam, which in turn leads to
CCNA Certification, a highly sought industry credential. Networking students also have the opportunity to earn up to 30 semester hours of
college credit. Program instructor Mrs. Terese Chevalier is excited about her students‟ future: “For dedicated students who earn their CCNA
certification, career opportunities are wide open. Alex Zimmerman graduated from the program in 2009 having earned his CCNA and A+
certifications and is currently attending the University of Akron. Alex‟s future is bright!” The high-tech focus of Cisco Networking paired with
real-world classroom experience empowers students to succeed in the global marketplace of the 21st century.
Early Placement Opportunities
Students in two-year Career-Technical Programs who meet the qualifications have the opportunity for employment during the second semester of
their senior year in industry-related positions. Students must be on track to graduate, maintain at least a 2.5 GPA in their Career-Technical
Program and be approved by their program teacher. Students interested in exploring early placement options should talk with their teacher and
guidance counselor.

Students Design Rangerman
Greeting Cards
Lakewood Alumni Foundation Executive Director Mrs. Teresa
Coyne Andreani had an idea to create all-occasion cards
featuring Lakewood High School‟s beloved Rangerman mascot out and
about in the community. To meet the challenge of creating, designing, and
printing the cards, Mrs. Andreani turned to West Shore‟s Interactive Media
teacher Mrs. Anne McQuay who, in turn, assigned the project to a group of
creative seniors. The result, a series of Rangerman greeting cards now on
sale in the Ranger Shop and at www.lakewoodrangers.com. “We‟ve
called on Interactive Media students to assist us with graphic design
projects in the past,” said Mrs. Andreani, whose office has used student
work in print advertising, logo design for products in the Ranger Shop, and
videography. “The students‟ work is consistently good and we‟re happy to
give the students some real-world experience right here in school.”.
Senior Projects Test Engineering Know How
At the start of their senior year, PLTW students are challenged to identify a problem, that directly
affects them or someone they know, and then work to solve the problem by applying the engineering
and design principles they have learned during this four-course program. This years project‟s include creating and
implementing designs for a self-tuning electric guitar with the tuner built into the guitar itself, a student-friendly conductivity
tester for the Lakewood High School Chemistry Lab, a car seat monitor that will sound an alarm if a child is left
unattended, and a throttle locking device for personal watercraft or ATV. “It is rewarding to see students apply their course knowledge and work
together in project-based teams. The creativity and ingenuity they apply during these projects reflects the hands-on, interactive focus of our
curriculum. ” says PLTW instructor Mr. Ed Holmok. Students who earn their PLTW certification are eligible for college credit at affiliated colleges in
Ohio and across the country. PLTW alumni are currently enrolled at Purdue, Ohio State University, Cleveland State University, University of Akron,
Ohio University, University of Toledo, Trine, Baldwin Wallace, and Cuyahoga Community College.
Culinary Arts Students Cook Breakfast for Lakewood Community Leaders
Lakewood City Schools recently hosted its 16th annual Community Leaders Breakfast where business, government, organization, ministerial, and volunteer leaders
gather to discuss issues of importance in our community. West Shore‟s Culinary Arts students have planned, prepared, and served breakfast for this event since
its founding. Lakewood Superintendent of Schools Dr. Madak remarked, “I am particularly grateful for the hard work that went into planning, preparing, and serving
such an outstanding breakfast. The food was excellent and attractively presented. Our students conducted themselves professionally and represented Lakewood
Career Development
Corner answers the question:
What Is a Career Passport?
Upon completion of their West Shore program every graduate receives
a Career Passport that contains his/her resume, program certifications,
industry test results, and letters of recommendation along with any
awards or achievement certificates the student earned. Career
Passports are part of a growing trend among job seekers to highlight
their education, experience, skill sets, and accomplishments in an
organized professional format. The Career Passport efficiently
summarizes what a West Shore graduate can offer prospective
employers, as well as two- or four-year colleges, universities, and
technical schools. A student‟s Career Passport validates his/her
credentials, hands-on training, and extra-curricular activities. In turn,
employers and educational institutions can use the Career Passport to
gauge a student‟s past performance with current education and
employment goals. Career Passports are a personalized career
development and job hunting tool that sets our graduates apart from
other job applicants. Taking a Career Passport to an interview
presents a professional and confident image and in turn, gives students
an important competitive advantage that is the foundation for a
successful interview. As we say to our graduates, “You have worked
hard to earn your Career Passport. Now is the time to put your
Passport to work to help continue your education and/or gain
employment.” If you have any questions about the Career Passport or
would like to see a sample, please contact Nancy Ralls, our Career
Development Coordinator, at nancy.ralls@lakewood.k12.oh.us or 216-
Director’s Message
Linda Thayer
Congratulations and best wishes to our 2011 West Shore graduates. While
we will miss these students, we are proud of their accomplishments and are
excited to learn of their future plans. We are confident that our students will
successfully integrate their career-technical education and training as they
transition to college, advanced technical training, or enter the workforce.
Many graduates took advantage of our partnership with Tri-C and the North
Coast Tech Prep Consortium, the Career-Technical College Credit Transfer
(CT 2) program, and Project Lead the Way to earn college credit, at no cost to
them, during their West Shore tenure. In our challenging economic times,
college credit earned in high school gives West Shore students both an
academic and financial advantage. On-the-job training and hands-on
experiences continue to provide West Shore graduates with valuable
real-world knowledge and skills. Students who have earned their Career
Passport are well equipped to meet the challenges of the 21 st century
workforce. I would personally like to thank the parents, families, teachers,
West Shore business community, and our education partners in Bay Village,
Lakewood, Rocky River, and Westlake for supporting our students in their
career-technical programs. Your dedication and support provides the
foundation for West Shore graduates continued success. Have a safe and
relaxing summer and we look forward to serving you and our students in the
coming school year.
Saying Goodbye Is Never Easy
This is especially true when we are losing such dear friends, co-workers and talented people
You would think Vicki Thoma always knew that Special Education was her special calling. If you
thought that you would be right! She went to college at Ohio University and obtained her BS in Special
Education in 1974. During her summers, while in college, Vicki worked at Camp Courageous. This
camp was for developmentally challenged children and adults. It was there that she realized the
passion she had for Special Education. Vicki felt that the education she received during those summers
at camp was more than she ever learned in the classroom. After college, Vicki started her teaching
career in Hartford, Connecticut, somewhere she always wanted to live. Eventually, she moved back to
the Cleveland area, married, and obtained her master‟s degree in special education. Vicki began
teaching in Avon Lake. She put her career on hold for eight years while she focused on raising her three children. Then she began to ease her
way back into the classroom by subbing. Vicki taught at Hayes in the Multiple Disabilities (MD) class for 10 years and then moved up to
Lakewood High school in 2000 and taught MD. What Vicki found to be interesting was that the students she taught in kindergarten during her 1 st
year at Hayes were her freshman her first year at the high school. What was wonderful about doing this was she was able to see the progression
of these students. In 2004, after obtaining her Transition to Work Endorsement, Vicki became the Job Training coordinator at Bonne Bell and Rae-
Ann Nursing Facility. Vicki is looking forward to retirement and plans to serve as an intern under her husband‟s watchful eye collecting and
researching crayfish with him! She also plans to travel, enjoy time with her children and any new opportunities that come along! Best wishes
Vicki from your friends and colleagues at West Shore. We will miss you!
Jim Slagle is a proud graduate of Muskingum College where he was a four-year football
letterman, the president of a fraternity and a History major. Upon graduation, Jim taught History
in three different area codes! John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio, Sidney High
School in Sidney, Ohio, and of course, Lakewood High! While employed here at LHS Jim taught
many different classes. He taught in Project OK which was the original Alternative High School.
He taught U.S. History, Make-Up U.S. History (students had to fail to apply), the Academic and
Career Exploration (ACE) program and Career Based Intervention (CBI). Jim also coached
football, landscaped the Bunts Road area near the East Gym and the front of the L Room, he
reinstated Powder Puff football and After the Game dances, and most importantly, coordinated
the Faculty Appreciation Breakfast on semester day! One of Jim‟s favorite memories involved the 1998 Homecoming. Apparently the DJ company
made an error and did not show up for the dance. This left Jim to celebrate Homecoming with 1,800 of his closest friends and no DJ! Jim loves
running into former students who tell him they are happy to see him and that he really has affected their lives. He feels, “Teachers take their worth
for granted and teachers do make a difference.” His retirement plans include spending time with his wife of 31 years, his daughter and maybe a
little coaching, some work and some play! Enjoy your retirement Jim from your friends and colleagues at West Shore! We will miss you!
