Figures 3 and 4: Marital status in Zomba and Mzimba compared
It is worth highlighting that there was no case of unmar-
ried woman recorded in the patrilineal Mzimba. Possibly this
explains how marriage is valued in this society. In addition,
women in patrilineal societies cannot afford to stay unmar-
ried because of the direct link between access to land and
marriage. Single in this context refers to women who are of
marriageable age but are not married and would include
those from at least 18 years. The widowed and the divorcees
are not regarded as part of this group.
