IMMERSED TUBE TUNNEL<br />

2.1. Possible Route of the Immersed Tube Tunnel<br />

The determination of a possible route of the <strong>tunnel</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the access roads, through<br />

residential <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> undeveloped areas was examined by using Google Earth. (Google Earth<br />

2008). A visual examination of the area leads to a decision of the İnciraltı-Çiğli <strong>tunnel</strong><br />

route (See Figure 2.1). This selection is made based on two reasons. First, the İnciraltı<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Çiğli sides are unpopulated <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> owned by the government. Second, the two sides<br />

allow the <strong>tunnel</strong> to be built on a straight route. This is essential to limit earthquake<br />

damage <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> water leakage risks. Furthermore, the Greater Municipality of the İzmir<br />

City (IZBB) <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> State Railways, Ports, Airports Authority (DLH) were consulted about<br />

whether there are <strong>an</strong>y drawbacks with regard to the route of the <strong>tunnel</strong>. Consequently,<br />

after their approval, the current alignment between İnciraltı <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Çiğli sides has been<br />

assigned as the route of the İzmir Bay Immersed Tube Tunnel. The possible route of the<br />

<strong>tunnel</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> corresponding water depths on this alignment were illustrated in Figures 2.1,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> 2.2, respectively.<br />
