C REATING A WARENESS
Awarenss of our aims through education
It is vital for people to know what we
are doing and why we are doing it.
Awareness of our activities and our
scheme's aims help to ensure
successful outcomes and create
positive change in your communities.
We try to use every opportunity to
inform people about our aims;
whether while out and about in
communities, or through our other
initiatives e.g. this year as part of our
safety chain installation scheme, we
called to almost 100 residents in
Thomondgate, Kileely, Ballynanty,
Johnsgate and Watergate. This was
the perfect chance to inform those we
hadn't met before about our activities
and we linked many residents to other
services in their areas.
We attend events throughout the City
to meet residents and other groups,
e.g. the recent Southside LEC
Multicultural Coffee morning in the Presentation School,
which saw students and their families from all over the
world and agencies from around the city mingle and
enjoy entertainment from the children's home countries.
This was a really positive occasion for all involved.
We have continued successful schemes from last year
e.g. the Christmas Card Project. This is where we help
primary school children to make and post Christmas
Cards to elderly people in
their community who may
be lonely over the
Christmas period. This
year local community
Gardai also attended the
sessions and discussed
different ways in which
children can help older
people in their area. This
project involved classes in
St. Munchin's CBS Boys
School, St. Munchin's
Girls School Ballynanty,
Salesians Secondary
School, Galvone N.S and
Our Lady Queen of Peace
N.S.
We assist the Gardaí with
their school visit
programmes e.g. the safe
cycling programme. We
plan to be involved with
this and other awareness campaigns in conjunction with
the Gardaí this year. (Please see future plans on page
17)
We continue to organise awareness talks for local
groups e.g. Active Retirement groups. These talks focus
on various issues such as health, safety and crime
prevention. We invite representatives from the relevant
agencies to assist with these information talks e.g.
Crime Prevention Officer from An Garda Siochana.
