EIGHT COMMUNITY COORDINATOR NEWSLETTER 2008/2009 I MPROVING T HE E NVIRONMENT Improving the Environment We all want to live in a clean, green environment; this is especially true when that environment is your own neighbourhood. The community coordinators want to help you improve your environment. We provide information to residents on why a clean environment benefits all. However, to create lasting change we also need resident involvement in planning and taking part in environmental activities. Sinead McDonnell, Environmental Awareness Officer at Limerick City Council would like to take this opportunity to advise residents on how to dispose of Bulky Waste such as mattresses, beds, attic and shed clear-outs. 1. You can use a permitted waste collector who will come directly to your home to remove bulky waste items on an appointment basis. You can hire a skip from a permitted waste collector. Disposing of bulky waste items can be difficult and expensive, talk to neighbours or friends about sharing the cost of skip hire if you have items which won't fit in your wheelie bin. If you hire a skip please follow these pointers: l Make sure that the waste collector has a waste collection permit. l All skips should be marked with the company name, telephone number and skip number. l If an unmarked skip is delivered to your home report this immediately to the Environment Department, Limerick City Council - the skip will be impounded for further investigation. We more than welcome ideas on how to resolve particular problems and can submit recommendations to Limerick City Council on how improvements to certain areas would improve the environment in your neighbourhood. Litter picks Once again we had a very successful run of litter picks through-out the summer of 2008, with a great turn-out of residents from all areas. We worked in conjunction with Limerick City Councils Environment Department, who kindly provided us with all the necessary equipment needed for each litter pick and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their on-going support of the litter pick scheme. Litter picks took place in 5 areas in total over the northside and southside of the city. The aim of the litter pick scheme is to encourage residents to work together to keep their community clean and safe. Please note that this information is up to date as of April 2009 and the details are subject to change. For the most up to date info please refer to the Limerick City Council website. www.limerickcity.ie We also provide information on waste collection services and bin waiver entitlements, recycling and how residents can organise a litter pick or clean up of their own. We'd like to thank all the Bring Bank Sites residents who gave up their time and put in the effort to work with us in running this highly successful scheme during its second year. As we go into our third year we are expanding to cover 7 different areas and look forward to working with as many residents as possible. Thank you also to the local Councillors and Community Gardai who attended the events, showing support for community based activities and improving quality of life in our neighbourhoods.
