Photoelectric Absorption<br />

Similar to the «Photoelectric Effect», first explained by Einstein:<br />

Photons <strong>with</strong> sufficiently <strong>high</strong> energies can eject electrons from the<br />

atomic «shells». The difference between the photon <strong>energy</strong> and<br />

ionisation <strong>energy</strong> provides kinetic <strong>energy</strong> for the freed electron:<br />

E kin = ( ℏ - E I )<br />

P.e. Absorption is the photoelectric effect <strong>with</strong> electrons from lowlying<br />

<strong>energy</strong> levels. Photons in the X-ray range are needed (~keV):<br />
