A taping method used to collect hairs and fibers from a victim’s sweater<br />

As DNA and other forensic technologies evolve, the significance of a single hair found within a crime scene grows<br />

each year. Cold homicide cases are being routinely re-examined for the smallest hair which might lend itself to<br />

mitochondrial DNA analysis. The compiler can bear witness to investigators’ excitement in finding three previously<br />

undiscovered hairs on evidence from a brutal home invasion and murder of a mother in front of her five year old son. Even<br />

though those hairs would eventually be excluded as a subject’s it provided hope which offered a much needed boost.<br />

Stable isotope analysis also makes use of trace evidence including hair to determine the provenance and history of<br />
