Dear Staff,
Student Senate would like to announce the umpteenth annual Winter Carnival, to be held the week
after February Break, February 27-March 2. Please share this with your advisees!
NEW FOR THIS YEAR:
• Eating Contest: The eating contest of 2012 will be finding a piece of gum in a large pile of whip
cream. The first to find the gum and blow a bubble wins. No hands are allowed, and your face is the
only body part which can be used to find the gum. One boy and one girl from each grade will
participate in this event during the assembly.
• Relay Event: The relay includes several different events including spinning in a circle 15 times,
balloon popping (to be done by sitting on the balloons with your butt, but no punching, kicking, etc.),
scooter races with toilet plungers (use the toilet plungers as the mode of transportation, don't kick or
use arms on the ground), bean bag toss through a hole in a board, and navigate a maze set up by
cones and other available materials. There will be teams of four, 2 boys and 2 girls per grade and
each person must complete each leg of the race, the first team to have each member complete all legs
is the winner.
• Hula Hooping: Hula hooping will be done during the assembly. You can only use your waist, not
neck, arms or any part of the body can be used to rotate the hula hoop. It will be done by using one
hula hoop for one minute, two for two minutes, three for three minutes and so on. If one hula hoop
hits the ground, you are out. The last person standing will be the winner, the fourth, third and second
places will be determined by the first class (4th) second class (3rd) and last class (2nd) to be
completely eliminated. Each class will have one girl and one boy compete.
• Snow Day plan: If there is a snow day on Monday of Winter Carnival week, Volleyball will be
played Thursday after school and Basketball will be played Friday morning, all other events will be
moved to Friday morning. If there is a snow day Tuesday through Thursday, then the after school
events for that day will be cancelled and made up Friday morning. In addition, whether the snow day
is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, then there will be NO hallway decorating Thursday
evening or Snow sculptures Thursday evening. Just the regular after school events until 4:45 pm
(unless Thursday is a snow day). Then there will be no classes Friday morning, but instead we will
make up the events missed from the snow day at that time. At the same time, students will decorate
the hallways and work on snow sculptures. If there is a snow day on Friday, the morning schedule
and afternoon assembly will be held on the following Monday. Just to clarify… a snow day any day
that week cancels the Thursday evening hallway and snow sculptures, moves them to Friday
morning, eliminates classes Friday morning, and the after school events missed will be made up
Friday morning (unless it is Monday when the snow day happens and Volleyball will be played
Thursday after school and Basketball Friday morning).
• Downsizing: This year, you will notice there are fewer events than last year. This was done in the
hope to maximize the enjoyment of both staff and students. Last year there were several reports from
students of confusion about when and where events were being held, and which events were on
which days. We also received a few reports of staff not being at the events they were chaperoning,
also due to confusion. In an effort to avoid that this year, we have removed some events and added
some new events which have being pushed for by students for many years. We hope staff appreciates
this effort. Senate members will be keeping a watchful eye on the effectiveness of this and bring it
back to discussions for next year.

• Snow Sculpture Rubric: Senate heard from some students and staff last year there was some
confusion, perhaps misunderstanding, or even disagreement over the Rubric and/or its interpretation.
This year one student from each grade level met with the rubric designer (Jeremy Smith) and refined
the rubric. The committee has approved the rubric, and also felt it was important for everyone to
receive it well in advance. It is at the end of this memo. If there is not enough snow, there will be an
indoor sculpture during the assembly with a different rubric. This will be decided on February 28.
Appeals committee- 1 Advisor from each grade level makes up the Appeals Committee. Any
issue/complaint/claim of injustice/etc. will go to this committee. You can see Mr. Gower or Mrs. Graziano to
get a form to fill out. BE CAREFUL!! If the committee rejects your appeal, that is it decides your complaint
has no merit, then your class will lose 50 points from it’s total. So only submit legitimate complaints that you
feel are important!!
Sign up for Events: Sign ups for after school events will be done by each advisor in regular homeroom
(similar to the way way signups for winter sports were done). Each advisor receives a spreadsheet with the
days and events. Please write down your advisee’s names and then check off up to 3 events (1 assembly
event) they wish to compete in. Students can compete in 3 events total (including the assembly, but no more
than 1 assembly event). This means if you sub for a student who signed up for an event because they are
absent, it counts as one of your 3 events. Each student can do no more than 3 events. Mr. Boyman will be
keeping track, but it is each student’s responsibility to keep track of how many events they compete in. If a
student competes in more than 3 events (or more than 1 assembly event) the extra event they compete in will
be ruled a “forfeit”.
This sign up must be done and forwarded to your Master Advisor (s) by Wednesday 2/15. We are then
asking that Master Advisors and/or the other Advisors compile a Final roster for each grade level for each
event. This includes talking with students who signed up for the same event and determining who will
compete if too many signed up, and recruiting students to compete if there are empty slots. We discovered
this is the way 3/4 of grade levels had been doing sign-ups anyway (for the most part) so this should be
nothing new for most folks! These final rosters need to be forwarded to Shane Gower (Electronically if
possible!) by Thursday 2/16 at 2:30pm. The rosters will then be posted on Friday so students will know who
is doing what before break. Robyn Graziano will send a separate e-mail with sign up information!!
During Winter Carnival Week: Each day count the number of advisees in your group who have dressed
according to the theme (see below). Email your tally to Shane Gower or put the results on a scrap piece of
paper (with your name!) and put it in Shane Gower' s mailbox by 2:30 each day. Class totals will be tallied at
the end of each day.
On Friday, Winter Carnival will culminate with a closing assembly in the Gymnasium. The Friday
schedule is posted below. This assembly will feature Staff vs. Student volleyball. A Female Staff team and a
Male Staff team should be organized. If the student team wins, they get a 75 points bonus. If the Staff team
wins, each of the other classes gets a 25 points bonus. During the assembly students will be able to compete
in a variety of competitions. The class with the most points is crowned Winter Carnival Champions.
Classes are encouraged to decorate their respected hallways; however points are not awarded for the
decorations. Students must leave the school by 9pm on Thursday and must have two of their advisors to
supervise at all times on Thursday (as of this writing the Freshmen had no adult supervision from 5:30-
9:00pm and so will need to stop decorating at 5:30pm. If this status changes, the grade level will be
informed). The hallway theme must be approved. No paint is allowed in the hallway decorations. It is
expected that each class will carefully take down their decorations by the end of Friday.

The Dance competition is back with the following rules clarifications:
• Must stick to previewed dance
• Dance must be previewed and approved by Staff (Mrs. Frey, Mrs. Archambault, and Mrs. Sinclair
after school on 2/28) who sign off on the routine.
• Costumes must be approved as well
• No obscene gestures (as judged by the administration)
• Appropriate song choice
• If any rules are violated the offending class will be penalized up to 1000 points
• Any violation of school rules is subject to disciplinary action
Ground Rules for the week:
Individual students may compete in up to 3 events total (and no more than one assembly activity).
The exception is the snow sculptures. Anyone can be involved and it does not count as one of the three
activities you are allowed to compete in. The dance competition is considered an assembly event as it is only
approved beforehand and the actual performance is during the assembly. Volleyball is considered an after
school event and not an assembly event as only the top 2 teams play in the assembly. ALSO: Any student
may compete in the “Back Up” Assembly event; these do not count against the student, as we may not get to
them! (There are no sign-ups for potential “Back Up” Assembly events, if we need to use them, they will be
announced on the spot and students will need to determine who will compete at that time)
Signups take place in Advisee time. Encourage your advisees to check and make sure that all
activities have enough representatives from your class.
Each after school and assembly activity is worth 100 points for 1 st place, 75 for 2 nd , 50 for 3 rd , and 25
for 4 th . Activities with both male and female tournaments are worth 100 points each for 1 st place. Some
events will allow for all 4 classes to compete at the same time, some allow only 2 to compete at once. In
these events, a "mini-tournament" will be used. The 9 th & 12 th grades will square off in this way with the
successful grade taking on the winner of the 10 h & 11 h grade game. The remaining 2 grades will play for 3rd
place.
The snow sculpture competition is worth 400 points for 1 st place, 300 for 2 nd , 200 for 3 rd , and 100 for
4 th . The dress up competition for the theme days is based on advisor honesty in calculating your advisee’s
dressing up. Submit the tallies on a daily basis to Shane Gower.
No noise makers are allowed for any assembly or after school events.
Any students disqualified for rules violations in a particular event will receive “0” points for the
event. If you aren’t sure, ASK!!!!!!!
Staff Participation
In order to establish a more perfect union, generate massive amounts of appropriate enthusiasm, and make
this the best Winter Carnival ever, we need staff participation. Here are some ways you can help:
• Chaperone or run an after school activity – This year we need many chaperones for many events. If
you are available to chaperone an after school activity, please sign up on the sign up sheet available in
the staff room, or a student senator will ask you personally. During hallway decorations, we need at least

two advisors from each grade level in the building at all times. Students must leave by 9pm on
Thursday. For the snow sculptures, if two staff members could work together to keep an eye on the
students. One idea is to set up a table in the Student Center and watch out of the windows while grading
papers. We understand that Winter Carnival demands a lot of the staff in order for the students to have
safe fun. We are also planning on holding a dance on Saturday March 5 and are still in need of
chaperones. We thank you very much for all of your time and effort you put into this event as we know
many of you have families and responsibilities out of school. Students will be making the rounds asking
for your help to chaperone one of these events.
• Help out during the Assembly - We do need high school staff to distribute themselves strategically
throughout the gym during the assembly to help with crowd control and to encourage appropriate
displays of school spirit & class unity. Please help us by making your presence felt in the bleachers,
especially the upper rows. Remember, students are NOT allowed on the floor unless they are competing,
and are not allowed to "taunt" the other classes with inappropriate language or hand gestures. The
Appeals Committee members should plan on sitting in the bleachers by the podium to be available to
meet during the assembly should any issues arise.
• Play Volleyball- We need male and female Staff willing to play in a volleyball game against students
during Friday’s assembly. No skill is required!! ANY staff can play!! Please talk to each other and sign
up with Jill Watson or Tom Radcliff.
• Encourage your advisees to participate – In an effort to get everyone involved, we are limiting each
student to two after school sports tourneys. There will be other events during the assembly, and the
student council and senate will be trying to elicit participation from students who might not normally be
involved in co-curricular enterprises.
THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION – AS ALWAYS, YOUR HELP IS APPRECIATED!
Thank you for helping to make this an exciting, positive, and school spirit building Winter Carnival.
Sincerely,
Winter Carnival Committee,
Shane Gower and Robyn Graziano Student Senate Advisors
Snow Sculpture Rubric 2012
A Note to Advisors:
Please read this with your advisees. The bold underlines are changes that have been
made from last year. It is important for students to understand that each aspect of this
rubric is weighted equally, and to win this event, each element must be present.
WINTER CARNIVAL SNOW SCULPTURE
Muppets (Sesame Street Characters are Included)
THE SCULPTURE SHOULD BE HUGE, COLORFUL & CREATIVE.
IT MAY BE PLACED IN A CONTEXT OR ENVIRONMENT.
• Each class will be assigned an area. The sculpture must be built in that assigned space,
and may not encroach on that of another class.

• The sculpture must be built entirely of snow and ice. Colorants are the only other material
allowed. Spray paint may not longer be used as a colorant. Cool Aid and food
coloring may still be used.
• Each class will be responsible for the removal of non-snow materials from their site and
the return of all tools used to their owners prior to judging.
• Materials and tools must be furnished by the class. DO NOT take anything out of an Art
room, IA, or any other classroom, office or storage space. Hand tools only.
A pick up truck is the only way to transport additional snow to the designated
spot.
• Judging will take place Friday morning before 9:00am.
• Disqualification of a class from this event will be the result of:
o Obscene or inappropriate elements in the sculpture
o Damage to another class’ sculpture
o Theft of tools/equipment/paint belonging to another class or classroom.
