ORAL CLINICAL VIGNETTE COMPETITION<br />

1. One resident from each of the Northern Illinois Internal Medicine residency programs will be selected<br />

by their program to present an oral clinical vignette.<br />

2. Oral Vignette abstract forms are due on September 23. NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted.<br />

Abstracts must be prepared as directed <strong>and</strong> submitted via the online abstract submission form on the<br />

chapter website. Please see attached ACP Regulations for Submission of Abstracts. Abstracts may not<br />

exceed 450 words.<br />

3. You will be notified via email by Friday, October 7 th , 2011 if your oral vignette is accepted.<br />

4. Oral vignettes are limited to five minutes in length. Oral vignettes will be presented during Northern<br />

Illinois Associates Day, Friday, November 4, 2011.<br />

5. Presentations MUST be submitted in Microsoft PowerPoint format to IL.associates.day@gmail.com NO<br />

LATER than Friday, October 28, 2011.<br />

6. Oral vignette presentations will be judged on: Case Selection, Content (introduction, description of<br />

case, literature review, discussion, <strong>and</strong> summary), Presentation (organization, audiovisual aids, question<br />

answering, within time frame) <strong>and</strong> Overall Impact.<br />

POSTER COMPETITION<br />

1. Abstracts are due on September 23, 2011. NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted. Abstracts must be<br />

submitted via the online abstract submission form on the Chapter website. Abstracts are limited to 450 words not<br />

including title or authors. Please see attached ACP Regulations for Submission of Abstracts.<br />

2. The poster competition will be limited, <strong>and</strong> selection will be made by the Illinois ACP to assure that there are a<br />

variety of types of posters (research vs. clinical vignette), subspecialty representation, <strong>and</strong> program representation.<br />

A person may be first author on only ONE poster. You will be notified via email by Friday, October 7 th , 2011<br />

if your oral vignette is accepted.<br />

3. Posters must be on display no later than 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2011. Poster judging will take<br />

place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2011. First authors are expected to be present by<br />

their poster for the entire judging period. Failure to be present for judging will result in immediate<br />

disqualification from the competition.<br />

4. Posters may be 4’ wide x 3’ tall (48” X 36”) maximum. Posters larger than 4’ x 3’ will not be accepted <strong>and</strong><br />

will be automatically disqualified from the competition. Materials to hang posters will be available at the<br />

display area.<br />

5. A single, lightweight poster is recommended for ease in displaying, however, the format is up to the presenter.<br />

The print on the posters should be large enough to be readable from 3 feet. Templates are available at<br />

6. Posters will be judged on the following: Originality, Significance, Presentation, Methods (if applicable),<br />

Visual Impact, <strong>and</strong> Interview.<br />

DOCTOR’S DILEMMA COMPETITION<br />

1. This is a team competition in which medical questions will be presented.<br />

2. Each program will be allowed ONE team.<br />

3. Each team will consist of one 1 st year resident, one 2 nd year resident, <strong>and</strong> one 3 rd year resident.<br />

4. Preliminary sessions will be closed to viewers <strong>and</strong> held during the morning session on Friday,<br />

November 4, 2011.<br />

5. The semi-finals <strong>and</strong> finals will be open to an audience <strong>and</strong> will be held in the afternoon on Friday,<br />

November 4, 2011.<br />

6. Award presentations will be Friday evening, November 4, following the Doctor’s Dilemma final<br />

competition. All competitors are expected to attend the awards portion of the meeting.

REGULATIONS FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS<br />

Clinical Vignette Competition<br />

Definition: A clinical vignette is a report of one or more<br />

cases that illustrates a new disease entity, or a prominent<br />

or unusual clinical feature of an established disease. It<br />

may include a summary of pertinent patient history,<br />

physical findings, laboratory data, or management<br />

description.<br />

Research Competition<br />

Definition: Submissions can report clinical <strong>and</strong>/or<br />

laboratory-based research, delineate a new investigation<br />

into mechanisms of disease, or consist of detailed review<br />

of a clinical problem. Abstracts concerned with efficiency,<br />

cost or method of health care delivery, quality of care, <strong>and</strong><br />

medical decision-making are also encouraged.<br />

ABSTRACT INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS<br />

Abstract Eligibility:<br />

Original abstracts that either have or have not been<br />

presented at other meetings will be considered.<br />

Presentation of original work at the chapter meeting may,<br />

however, jeopardize presentation before another society.<br />

Abstracts are eligible if they have been published;<br />

however, abstracts based upon full papers that have been<br />

published are not eligible.<br />

Author Eligibility:<br />

The first author of an abstract must be an ACP Associate<br />

Member in good st<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

Co-authors need not be ACP members. Abstracts must be<br />

signed by your Program Director.<br />

You are encouraged to write your abstract in a format<br />

similar to that used in scientific papers so that it may be<br />

cited in curriculum vitae or submitted as evidence of<br />

scholarly activity when your are preparing to advance to<br />

Fellowship in the American College of Physicians.<br />

Format:<br />

1. Abstracts must be completed in Word format <strong>and</strong><br />

emailed to the Chapter.<br />

2. Abstracts are limited to 450 words.<br />

3. The title should be brief <strong>and</strong> clearly state content of<br />

paper.<br />

4. Name of presenting author must be listed first.<br />

4. List name <strong>and</strong> one degree only (e.g., MD, DO) for each<br />

author. Indicate their status within ACP (Associate,<br />

Member, or Fellow), if applicable. Professional title of<br />

positions should not be included.<br />

5. List names of authors’ institution(s), city, <strong>and</strong> state.<br />

Note: The format used in the Annals of Internal<br />

Medicine is also encouraged.<br />

The body of the abstract should be organized as<br />

follows:<br />

1. Purpose for study (one sentence if possible).<br />

2. Simple statement of methods.<br />

3. Summary of results (adequate to support conclusions).<br />

4. Statement of conclusions (Do not use phrases such as<br />

“The results will be discussed.”)<br />

5. This format may be modified, as appropriate, for<br />

Clinical Vignette submissions, or for Research<br />

submissions diverging from the st<strong>and</strong>ard research<br />

methods.<br />

Style:<br />

Write for clarity <strong>and</strong> directness. Avoid the use of medical<br />

jargon or stock empty phrases. A table may be used if its<br />

fits within the borderlines. Keep in mind that grammar will<br />

be taken into consideration. Please proofread your abstract<br />

carefully.<br />

Abbreviations, Symbols, <strong>and</strong> Nomenclature:<br />

Usage should conform as closely as possible to that<br />

recommended in CBE Style Manual, (6th edition., 1994),<br />

published by the Council of Biology Editors, <strong>and</strong> available<br />

from CBE Secretariat, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD<br />

20814. Nonst<strong>and</strong>ard abbreviations must be kept to a<br />

minimum <strong>and</strong> must be explained when used. Generic<br />

names of drugs are preferred: a proprietary name may be<br />

given only with the first use of the generic name.<br />

Units of measurement should be metric (SI), including<br />

those for height of length, mass (weight), <strong>and</strong> body<br />

temperature. Preferred concentration units in clinical<br />

chemical measurements are those recommended by the<br />

International Union of Pure <strong>and</strong> Applied Chemistry: for<br />

substances of known, pure composition,<br />

millimoles/milliliter or millimoles/liter; for mixtures of<br />

substances where exact composition is not known,<br />

grams/liter.
