will we deliver dishes to
our customers.
where quality matters
Operating from a state-of-the-art factory in the heart
of Wiltshire, apetito has the processes and systems
required to ensure meals leaving the location are
the best they can possibly be.
Launched in 1995 and occupying
over six acres, our ‘safe food factory’
manufactures almost one million
meals and desserts every week.
Segregated into high and low-risk
with physical barriers and colour
codes, innovative dispensary
and allergen control: the factory’s
separate departments are dedicated
to preparing dishes, butchery,
cooking, de-boxing, canning
and storage. The temperaturecontrolled
final packing area leads
to the cold store and despatch.
Assurances and accreditation
The factory has achieved the BRC
(British Retail Consortium) Global
Standard for Food Safety Issue 5
accreditation – the highest
possible level.
apetito do not hold BS5750 or
ISO 9001 as these quality assurance
systems do not demand high quality
– they simply demand that a given
standard is achieved.
Our operations are CHAS
(Contractors Health and Safety
Scheme) accredited and we also
operate to ISO 18001 Health and
Safety Management Systems.
In addition, NHS Supplies, numerous
local authorities, and the Meat and
Livestock Commission have audited
the factory. The factory also has an
EC export license for meat and
fish products.
Onsite laboratory
As well as physical and taste
checks on our produce, apetito
verifies its standing as a
sustainable food manufacturer,
with scientific analysis.
As most of our customers are
vulnerable people, it is important
that we are socially responsible
and have robust systems in place
to ensure that our meals are always
safe, healthy and nutritious. apetito’s
onsite laboratory leads the way
in the food and catering solutions
sector. Independently audited
and accredited to CLAS (Campden
Laboratory Accreditation Service)
standard, it enables our positive
release system, in which
we quarantine every product until
we analyse and test the batch.
Only once the product has met
strict microbiological criteria, and
we know it is completely safe, will we
release it for despatch. The laboratory
also allows us to perform chemical
analysis of products to confirm
nutritional contents. In turn, this
enables us to provide customers
and consumers with accurate
nutritional information.

To protect our data, we have leading fire suppression systems that
use HFC227 (heptafluoropropane); an inert gas that is safe, clean and
environmentally friendly. Our Environmental Monitoring System (EMS)
also constantly monitors environmental states and alerts the Systems
Operations team when necessary.
Our Nutridata
system helps you
plan menus and
cater for special diets.

Team apetito
the team behind our meals
People are our strongest asset. It’s a phrase that’s
often said but rarely meant. At apetito, we turn these
words into meaningful actions. The result is a working
environment that secures staff loyalty and enhances
the service you receive.
Recruitment and induction
We believe in recruiting the best.
That’s why we invest in securing
and rewarding the right candidates.
Once appointed, every member
of staff attends an induction
programme. For example, new
contract managers undergo an
induction programme that places
them for two weeks in the production
area, two days with customer service
and distribution and for a month in
another contract. This experience
equips our managers with the insight
and expertise they need to perform
successfully in their roles. Furthermore,
the induction forges strong links
across the company, with individuals
appreciating the roles and tasks
of others and their impact on the
organisation. When initiating a new
contract, we also provide new drivers,
supervisors and administrators
with comprehensive training
modules that cover every aspect
of their roles.
Training and development
From the moment people join
apetito, they take their place in
a team that offers them respect,
support and opportunities.
Our training and development
programmes are second to none.
We offer employees training in
Basic, Intermediate and Advanced
Food Hygiene. All operatives receive
Basic level training, while supervisors
reach at least Intermediate level,
and production management
are trained to Advanced level.
For management-level training,
we also gain inspiration from
world leaders in this field.

Our team ethos expands
beyond our business.
We put our words
into action through such
ventures as the charitable
work of our Staff Foundation,
helping feed the needy in
partnership with FareShare,
and our annual Schools’
Masterchef competition.
“ that vitality and need to grow and willingness to
actively recruit the right people into the organisation
was one of the key things to strike me when I joined,
which is unusual for a food manufacturer, especially
one growing so quickly in size.”
Catherine Harris, Buying Manager
Staff Foundation
In order to embed a culture of
volunteering, fundraising and giving
across the organisation we set up the
apetito Staff Foundation. Through a
committee made up of staff across
the organisation, every member of
the apetito team has a chance to
nominate a recipient for grants.
The Staff Foundation embodies
apetito’s commitment to its staff and
the wider community. We care about
the community activities that our
staff and their children dedicate their
time to. To date, we have awarded
over £76,000 across 210 projects.
Some recent awards have included:
• Training equipment for the Wiltshire
Fire and Rescue Service scheme for
vulnerable teenagers.
• Contribution to a scanner for the
William Budd Oncology Ward –
Bath Royal United Hospital after
one of our staff was treated there.
• Local football/rugby kits for
new seasons.
This work has won the recognition of
the Food and Drink Federation for our
efforts in Community Partnership.
Success Through Teamwork Awards
Every year, apetito holds its Success
Through Teamwork Awards.
The scheme rewards teams for
exceptional performance that
maximises our competitive
advantage internally and externally.
Each winning team receives a
trophy and we donate £1,000 to
charities of their choice. The judging
panel assesses teams on the
following criteria:
World-Class Customer Service
partners, and inspiring excellence
in others.
Sustainability
We want to help enhance
people’s lives today,
without compromising the
quality of people’s lives
tomorrow. Achieving this
means we must make a
positive social, economic and
environmental impact.
taking responsibility
for our actions
It is not enough to focus purely on providing
customers with market-leading products and services.
We are equally responsible for respecting the environment,
benefitting the economy and caring for the communities
in which we serve.
To help us in our aims, we have
established an Energy Management
team, and work closely with the
Carbon Trust to identify and prioritise
initiatives. We have also introduced a
three-pillar approach that embraces
our commitment to the environment,
economy, and wider society.
Just some of our many initiatives
and measures include:
• ISO14001 certification across our
entire operation, reflecting our
environmental commitments
and innovative approaches.
• Only using suppliers that
have signed the Ethical Trading
Initiative Standard.
• Aluminium trays and outer cartons
made from 99% and 90% recycled
materials respectively.
• Ensuring almost 80% of individual
meals sold contain moderate salt.
• Creating meals that meet the
needs of customers with special
dietary requirements.
• Providing Healthcare and
Care Home customers with
reusable crates.
• Donating over £76,000 to good
causes in the past two years.
• Reviewing our distribution mileage
to eliminate around 1,000,000
miles a year, saving approximately
105 tonnes of CO2.
• Replacing all of our distribution
truck fleet with Euro 5 engine
specification vehicles featuring
EU Stage 3A specification freezers
that help lower hydrocarbon,
nitrous oxide and sulphur
dioxide emissions.
• Using the latest software to plan
the most efficient delivery routes.
By 2012, we aim to:
• Reduce overall direct CO2 emissions
per kilogram of delivered product
by 25%, compared with 2007.
• Work with stakeholders to find
environmentally efficient ways
to reduce packaging and assist
consumer recycling.
• Reduce water usage per kilogram
of manufactured product
(excluding product content)
by 25%, compared with 2007.
• Strengthen our contribution to the
communities in which we work.
• Improve our economic
contribution through direct
and indirect employment.

“ at apetito we take our environmental
responsibility very seriously. I’m proud
to say that we have already completely
eliminated food and packaging waste sent
to landfill from our direct operations,
two years ahead of schedule. we’ll never be
complacent, and are now well on our way
to cut our CO2 emissions by 25%.”
