Special Olympics Annual Report 2011
IN 2011, SPECIAL OLYMPICS
LOST A CHAMPION
ROBERT SARGENT “SARGE” SHRIVER, 1915-2011
From the Peace Corps to Head Start to Special Olympics
and beyond, Sargent Shriver worked to give everyone
the chance to reach their full potential. He also saw
Special Olympics athletes as global ambassadors for
peace. Over the years, he served as President of the
Special Olympics movement, as well as Chairman, and
Chairman of the Board Emeritus. With his leadership,
Special Olympics expanded into the Middle East, Far
East, the former Soviet Republic, and elsewhere.
We work to continue Sargent Shriver’s legacy by
helping people and communities unite in harmony
through sport.
