New President, New Century New President, New ... - Biola University

In 1957, Biola president Sam Sutherland (carrying
a megaphone, far left) took students to see
the site of the new campus — a 75-acre parcel
of land purchased from publishing giant Andrew
McNally. Heralded as the “up-and-comingest” of
Los Angeles’ emerging suburbs, La Mirada, at that
time, was dotted with olive trees and irrigation
lakes. Today, the city — located on the borders of
thriving Los Angeles and Orange counties — has
about 48,600 residents and was recently named
one of the “Best Places to Live” by Money Magazine,
which looked at economic opportunity, good
schools, safe streets, things to do and a real sense
of community.
