_________ TOTAL GE UNITS
A TOTAL OF 130 UNITS IS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION
Mission Statement
Biola University’s Communication Studies Major exists to
produce committed Christian graduates who are adept at
constructing ethical written and oral messages. They should
also be critical consumers of messages communicated by all
forms of media, both popular and religious. These graduates
are trained in both the theory and practice of communicative
arts.
All Communication Studies majors must receive at least a grade of “C” in all major courses taken at Biola.
Communication Studies majors should have a deep understanding of issues relating to the contexts of rhetoric and persuasion, interpersonal
communication, intercultural communication gender communication, and their related subdisciplines (such as organizational communication and
other interdisciplinary pursuits). Speech/Drama emphasis students should understand the power of drama as participant, critic, and creative
source. Students should work actively to find avenues for dramatic expression in presenting aspects of their faith in a variety of vocations as well
as in direct ministry opportunities.
To excel morally and spiritually our graduates need a thorough understanding of and commitment to the Bible. They also need skill in thinking
through dilemmas they will face in morally challenging industries. They need to be ‘be prepared to give an answer to anyone who asks [them] to
give a reason for the hope that [they] have.” I Peter 3:15. They must be prepared to work hard, yet give their highest priority to God, family and
their Christian community.
In being critics of the messages inherent in public, political, popular and personal spheres of communication, Communication Studies majors
learn to identify the voices of those who are marginalized so that they may be able to advocate their cause and minister to them in a manner that is
sensitive and biblical.
