Pair of lions
make their debut
After nearly six months in the
city, two male lions finally
made their public debut at the
Calgary Zoo Thursday.
Bylaw officers seized two
dogs that allegedly attacked a
woman Wednesday night and
are also investigating a fight
between two dogs that resulted
in human injuries Thursday
morning.
The first incident occurred
in Whitehorn when a woman
out walking was allegedly
attacked by two pit-bull crossbreeds
that were at large, said
Doug Frizzell of animal and
bylaw services.
He said police responded to
the scene and the dogs’ owner
eventually helped corral the
animals into the back of a
police car. The dogs were then
handed over to bylaw officers
and remain in city custody.
“They’ll be here until we’ve
finished our investigation and
reviewed the matter with the
law department,” Frizzell said.
Charges are pending
against the dogs’ owner,
Frizzell added, and they will
depend on the extent of the
woman’s injuries.
The Thursday incident
happened on private property
near Memorial Drive and 58th
Street N.E.
Frizzell said it appears one
dog hopped over a fence in
pursuit of a magpie and ended
up in a fight with a dog in the
neighbouring yard.
No animals were seized
and one of the owners suffered
minor injuries trying to separate
the dogs, he said.
These latest incidents come
after three dogs were seized
Monday following a fight in an
Ogden off-leash area that left a
Pomeranian dead.
in Calgary in July and have
since completed the required
quarantine period.
They will not breed with
the zoo’s two older female
lions, Tisha and Mbira, who
are 17 years old, but curator
Jamie Dorgan said they do
hope to breed the males in the
coming years.
“In the future these boys
will get a recommendation
to breed when we get some
new females in, but that’s
probably five to 10 years down
the road.”
Aslan and Baruti can be
found in the outdoor lion
exhibit in Destination Africa.
Wildrose rolls dice on
lotto plan for arenas
Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith speaks to reporters Thursday about using
the Keno lottery game to fund Edmonton’s proposed downtown arena.
Alberta’s official Opposition
says a lottery game could help
fund sports projects in the
province, including the proposed
Edmonton arena.
Wildrose Leader Danielle
Smith told media on Thursday
the Keno game could be “revamped,
rebranded and remarketed”
to cover additional revenues
needed by sports arenas.
Revenue generated from
Keno could cover the $100-million
funding gap for the Edmonton
arena within five
years, while avoiding the use of
tax dollars to support the project,
said Smith.
“This type of arrangement
will take co-operation,” she
said.
“It will take co-operation
between Alberta Gaming and
Liquor, the two major cities —
Edmonton and Calgary — and
the respective NHL franchises.”
Keno raised $3.1 million in
revenue in Alberta last year.
The digital-gaming program
is found in 88 bingo halls, casinos
and gaming rooms in
Details
• In Alberta, a Keno draw
takes place every fi ve
minutes and draw results
are usually displayed on
venue television screens.
• The maximum payout is
$100,000.
• Smith said Keno is an
innovative funding solution
that would allow
fans to directly support
their teams.
Alberta.
Smith pointed out that
in British Columbia, Keno
brought in $235 million from
more than 4,000 locations last
year.
“We’re just trying to be constructive
to propose a gaming
option that we know works
elsewhere,” Smith said.
According to Wildrose party
estimates, if a Keno rebranded
by Alberta’s NHL teams were
offered in 1,000 bars and 2,200
lottery outlets in the province,
the system could bring in $196
million a year.
The Wildrose party estimates
that $137 million would
go to winners, $5 million to
administration, $5 million to
hosts and the remaining $49
million would be split between
Edmonton ($20 million), Calgary
($20 million) and charities
($9 million).
