Calgary’s newest off-leash
area was designed from
the ground up from a dog’s
point of view, the city and
Parks Foundation of Calgary
announced on Wednesday.
The Jim Davidson Bark
and Play Off-Leash Area
will feature an agility run,
weave poles, a dog fountain
and other elements built
specifically with dog behaviour
in mind.
The project is being
personally funded by First-
Energy Capital CEO Jim
Davidson, who said he decided
to donate $650,000 in
part because he is an avid
dog owner himself.
“It was important to
me,” Davidson said. “This is
not just a dog park. This is
an enhanced one.”
“You can use it to train
your dog, you can use it to
socialize to your dog, you
can use it to build on good
habits and get rid of bad
habits.”
The Calgary Humane Society
assisted in the design
of the fully fenced, 11-acre
off-leash area, to be built
near the intersection of
52 Street and Auburn Bay
Drive S.E.
Parks Foundation CEO
Myrna Dube said the offleash
area will connect to
the Calgary Greenway — a
138-kilometre trail that will
eventually circle the entire
city, that her organization
is also spearheading.
City parks manager Doug
Marter said Calgary
already has “well over”
150 off-leash areas, but
this project will add something
new to the city’s
amenities for dog owners.
“We are very happy to
see this and very supportive
of it,” he said. “We
think this is an excellent
project.”
• The city’s off-leash
areas currently cover
the equivalent of 1,600
Canadian football
fields, Marter noted.
Both the off-leash area
and Phase 2 of the Greenway,
which covers a major
section of southeast Calgary,
should be complete by
the end of the year, Dube
said.
