ON THE ROAD AGAIN... by Terri Lee Sweet, AMA District 14 Road Chair May and the District 14 rides are starting! We start the month off with the 93rd Annual Spring Run with Muskegon Motorcycle Club. The event will be held on Sunday, May 5. It leaves from Mt. Garfield at 5803 Lake Harbor Road, just south of Muskegon. The gates open at 8 AM and the ride starts at 11 AM. If you haven’t been to this ride, take the time to go. Boring, you say? Hardly. They are hard workers and put on a number of events at a number of venues. They host the National Hill Climbs every even numbered year, So the next National for them will be 2014. As a road rider, this is an event to which you can ride, watch the competition and then ride back home. It’s a terrifc place to have fun with friends or meet new people. The second event on our May calendar is the Annual Blessing of 10 www.midwestmotorcyclist.com the Bikes in Baldwin, hosted by Para Dice Motorcycle Club. Mark Sunday, May 19th for this one. This is the 41st year for this event and it draws about 6,000 bikes. It is so huge, it is held at the airport on M-37 in Baldwin. The gates open at 9 AM and the Blessing is done by about 1-1:30 PM. There are plenty of vendors around to spend time checking out. You can find food or leather or pins or things you need to dress you or your bike up. There is live music to do some singing and dancing. If you plan to attend and spend the weekend, there is also a ride that leaves from the airport around noon on Saturday, May 18th. The riders go to a local senior-care facility and the residents (who are able) come out to look at the bikes. Bikers are allowed inside to visit with the less-mobile seniors. So if you go for the weekend, attend this ride and go brighten up some lives. Para Dice Motorcycle Club spends their time raising money for seniors and veterans. They are very dedicated to both. They hold a Fall Steak Fry and Ride in October (6th) and that’s another good event to put on the calendar. So May starts us out and we have lots of rides after that. Every weekend in June offers a ride someplace. Another thing with which we are getting involved, is a committee that consists of people from Michigan Highway Safety, MDOT, ABATE, Michigan State Police, County Sheriffs, motorcycle safety educators, etc. We are working on ways to make the roads safer for motorcyclists. This will be an ongoing adventure to develop programs and training not only for bike riders but for cage drivers as well. I recently met a woman who has taken some special EMT training to learn to teach others how to help when there is a motorcycle accident and the EMTs have not yet arrived. As everyone knows, in these crises, every minute counts. Removing helmets properly, helping to slow blood loss, what to safely remove and what to stabilize.... things like that are all included in the class. I am going to attempt to put a class together - possibly in more then one location - and offer the class to those interested. This class may save a life. The cost would be $55 per person and probably take up a day of your time but it will be time and money well spent. I’ll be back with you about this class. On another safety note, the 2012 statistics have been released from the Michigan State Police regarding accidents and deaths since the helmet law was reapealed. We gained the right to make our own decisions about wearing or not wearing a helmet and we all can make our own choices. The new report shows that there were five deaths in Michigan in 2011 related to not wearing a helmet. In 2012 there were fifty-five deaths related to no helmet. The choice is yours but also remember that you need extra insurance if you decide to leave your helmet at home. Riding season is here. I don’t know about you but I am so glad. Just remember to keep your eyes moving and try to expect the unexpected. We lose too many of our friends and have too many close calls. Try to do everything you can to be safe and be smart. I have already heard about our fellow riders that have been involved in some accidents and a few have been killed. If you are going to get your name in the paper, do it because you did something super great and give bikers a good name. Until next time...BE SAFE! May 2013

With a cold front on the way, that would be the warmest day of the week so it was time to enjoy the elevation of the Cherohala Skyway. Overlooks allow you to stop and admire the views. For me, overlooks are the places where I slow down and watch out for traffic. The rest of the 50 miles of perfectly-radiused corners and no traffic put me in a state of motorcycle Zen that few roads can do. As if that weren’t mystical enough, at one point the Triple and I rode through the thick smoke of a roadside controlled burn. Inhaling the smoke, I felt like the mountain had become a part of me and I a part of the mountain. I did say Zen, didn’t I? I am not a religious man but I do consider myself spiritual and riding the Cherohala the way it was meant to be ridden was a truly spiritual experience. If there were an official church of speed, this would be one if its greatest cathedrals. A gas station in Tellico Plains provided fuel for both me and the Triumph and then it was time to retrace my ride back to Pigeon Forge. I realized that I love the Cherohala as much going south as I did going north. Deal’s Gap and the Foothills Parkway also felt just as good in the opposite direction. Once the cold front and the rain went through the following day, I went back out to ride some of my other favorite roads. I have all week to soak in as much of the Smoky Mountains as I can. That first day’s 250 miles were only the beginning. Next month: Spring in the Smokies – The Middle.
