The Northeast began
coming back to life on
Monday after being buried
by snow from a recordsetting
winter storm that
left at least 12 persons
dead, closed highways, airports,
and businesses, and
shut down power to more
than 650,000 residents.
Temperatures crawled
above the freezing mark
and little by little electric
service came back up,
opening up offices, streets,
and the business of business.
On Sunday, a tornado
tore through a town in
Mississippi as it spun from
a severe storm and caused
“significant damage,”
smashing buildings, downing
trees, and leaving at
least 60 persons injured.
Gallup released its latest
polling results on Monday,
revealing findings that
showed that since children
26 years old and younger
have been allowed by
Obamacare to stay on
their parents’ health insurance
the number of young
people without health in-
surance had declined.
Gallup found that levels of
older persons remained
about the same since the
Affordable Health Care
Act was enacted.
At the same time, researchers
at the University
of Iowa reported on Monday
that recently, when attempting
to discern and to
compare the price of a
common hospital procedure
– a hip replacement –
only 16 percent of the nation’s
hospitals could produce
a complete price,
including doctor’s fees and
hospital costs. And only
47 percent could come up
with an amount after contacting
health care
providers. And the estimates
received? From
$11,000 to $125,798, depending
on the hospital.
The Federal Trade
Commission reported on
Monday that five percent
of all U.S. consumers have
credit report errors that
potentially put pocket
books at risk. The trade
group for the nation’s
credit reporting agencies,
the Consumer Data Industry
Association, challenging
the agency’s
interpretation, saying
credit reports were “highly
accurate.”
said. “These values are
needed at the federal level
and I am committed to
fighting waste, fraud, and
abuse and ensuring good
common sense in the system.”
Fleischmann said he
did not agree with the direction
the Obama administration
was taking
America, calling the next
four years as “a difficult
time to come” but “not
completely hopeless” as
the Republicans still held
the House of Representatives.
“For four years Senator
Harry Reid has failed to
pass a federal budget,”
Fleischmann said, “but we
came up with ‘No Budget,
No Pay,’ meaning that if
there’s no budget, Congress
doesn’t get paid.
And that proposal has the
approval of 93 percent of
all Americans.”
The Third District representative
said he opposed,
and would
continue to oppose, the
“tax, borrow, and spend”
mentality of the presidential
administration, that he
would fight President
Obama “tooth and nail” to
keep him from taking
away Second Amendment
gun ownership rights, and
that he would make it a
priority to bring new jobs
to Monroe County and
the East Tennessee 11county
region.
Following Fleischmann,
Ramsey took the
microphone and immediately
began to laud the
Tennessee legislature and
its no-nonsense approach
to the ongoing business of
the state.
“Tennessee doesn’t borrow
money like Washington
does,” he said.
“Whenever Tennessee
borrows money – and it’s
not often we have to – we
pay it back.”
Ramsey detailed the
difficulty of the recent
statewide redistricting, of
“And during the time
that I have been Speaker
of the Senate since 2007,
we passed two state budgets
that were smaller each
time than the year before,”
he said. “We are one of
the few states that are fully
funded in our state employee
pension fund.”
Ramsey said he supported
“doing away with
the Death Tax,” or the inheritance
tax, and was
happy the legislature had
done away with the “Gift
Tax.”
He said Tennessee was
“setting a standard in education.”
“Nothing makes a difference
in a child’s education
like quality teachers
in the classroom,” Ramsey
said. “But tenure for
teachers is something
teachers earn. It’s not just
given. Therefore, we
shouldn’t have collective
bargaining by teachers,
but we should have new
ways of evaluating our
teachers, and for the first
time, we have started focusing
on graduating students,
not just enrolling
them in school.”
Ramsey ended his address
with reaffirming the
Republican Party’s commitment
to “pro life” and
to upholding the rights of
gun ownership as guaranteed
in the Second
Amendment.
“This fall we are placing
on the ballot a resolution
to protect the life of a
fetus,” he said. “The unborn
have rights.”
Ramsey said that two
Pope Benedict XVI announced
on Monday that
he would resign his post as
leader of the world’s 1.2
billion Roman Catholics,
stepping down on February
28 because he no
longer has the strength
and energy to continue his
papal duties. The 85-yearold
pontiff spoke in Latin
in relating his decision,
which will make him the
first pope to vacate the
high clergy office in 600
years, or during the Middle
Ages right after the
Crusades, when Pope
Gregory XII left the post
while still alive.
Meanwhile, Benedict’s
move set the stage for a
conclave of Cardinals to
elect a new Pope before
the end of March, an action
that did not leave the
Vatican much time if a
new leader is to be selected
before Easter. A
spokesman said that since
Benedict had not died,
there would not be the
usual nine days mourning.
French and Malian government
forces captured a
strategic northern city in
the African country of
Mali on Sunday, retaking
Gao after a prolonged battle
that damaged numerous
buildings and other
structures. The fight
forced the retreat of radical
Islamic militants, who
had ruled the city for 10
months before being
ousted in January and had
attempted a return over
the weekend.
Around The Globe
A Sunday evening
stampede of tens of thousands
of worshippers in
the northern India city of
Allahbad led to the deaths
of 36 individuals, who
were caught in the chaos
at a train station that came
about when station officials
announced a lastminute
change in the
platform. An estimated 30
million Hindus had gathered
near the city, at the
confluence of the Ganges,
the Yamuna, and the
Saraswati rivers as part of
the 55-day Kumbh Mela,
or Pitcher Festival, to immerse
themselves in the
waters and wash away sins.
A coalmine explosion
in northern Russia killed
18 miners on Monday, the
result of a buildup
methane gas, officials with
the country’s Emergency
Situations Ministry confirmed.
Of the 23 men in
the mine, two escaped and
three others were rescued.
The U.S. Coast Guard
said on Monday that a
Carnival cruise ship that
extinguished a fire on
board its “Triumph” liner
over the weekend was
continuing to maintain
communication despite
being adrift in the Gulf of
Mexico. Tugboats were
dispatched to tow the immense
ship back to port in
Progreso, Mexico, where
it and its 3,143 guests were
expected to arrive on
Wednesday.
Rest in peace, Lolong,
