In Ohio coal country
on Saturday, Republican
vice presidential candidate
Paul Ryan shot a bolt at
President Obama’s energy
policy, noting that gas
prices had doubled since
Obama took office, that
thousands of workers had
lost coal jobs, that 100 coal
plants had been scheduled
to close, and that thousands
of additional jobs
were “on the chopping
block.” The Southeastern
Ohio Rally was Ryan’s
24th public event in the
Buckeye State.
As the final debate between
Obama and GOP
NATIONWIDE
presidential candidate
Mitt Romney moved into
view on Monday night
(tonight), Vice President
Joe Biden appeared in
Florida on Saturday, showing
up in Orlando and St.
Augustine, where he attacked
Romney and called
the former Massachusetts
governor “out of touch”
with the country. Biden
praised Obama’s record on
the nation’s housing crisis
and women’s health care.
their client, arguing there
was insufficient evidence
for conviction nor was
there enough time to prepare
for a trial. Sandusky
Kudos for Eastern
Kentucky University on
Friday as the school acquired
a 33-pound meteorite
from an East
Tennessee family that
used the rock for a
doorstop and a flowerbed
ornament that might have
roots as far back as 1853
when the space stone
dropped from the sky and
later (in the 1930s) turned
up in a cow pasture near
Tazewell. The rock would
be used for educational
and outreach purposes,
school officials said.
In Louisiana, Caddo
Parish commissioners
voted on Thursday to encourage
businesses to
adopt dress codes that
would prohibit patrons
from wearing pajamas,
If you looked into the
sky Saturday night, those
meteor showers were the
junior version of the famous
Perseid shower and
the shooting stars that
arced across the October
sky reached their apex just
before daylight early Sunday.
The Orionid meteor
shower – so called because
the heavenly shower show
And according to Prevention
if you want to live to
things” that might help.
Keep a flat belly after
in your oatmeal, limit
daily calories to between
1,400 and 2,000, be a tea
lover (black or green), skip
the colas, even diet, eat
purple foods (Concord
grapes, blueberries, red
wine), eat no more than 18
ounces of red meat per
week, and run 40 minutes
per day (or bike or swim).
According to Poe, officers
John D. Wilson Jr of Pond
Wear said that when he
awoke him, Wilson’s eyes
were bloodshot, his
speech was slurred, he
acted confused, and he
performed poorly on sobriety
tests. A status
check revealed two prior
DUI convictions, one in
Monroe County in September
2009 and a second
in Blount County in July
2010.
In January 2011, Wilson
received a conviction as a
habitual motor vehicle offender.
A bag found in the vehicle
– a Toyota Four-Runner
– held meth
components, Wear said,
including a one-pot meth
lab containing a bi-layer
liquid, ammonium nitrate,
and sodium hydroxide,
Coleman fuel, and drain
cleaner. As Wilson stood
near a police cruiser, he
pulled from his waistband
and dropped a snorting
straw and a piece of aluminum
foil containing a
white powder of probable
meth, Wear said.
As he was placed in
custody, Wilson offered
officers resistance and at
the jail correction officers
asked if he had anything illegal
on him. Wilson said
no, but a search found suspect
marijuana in his possession.
Tips For A Healthy Halloween From The Tennessee Department Of Health
Pumpkins on the porch
and chatter about costumes
can only mean one
thing: Halloween is fast
approaching. As party
goers and trick-or-treaters
plan for a night of fun, the
Tennessee Department of
Health suggests spending a
few minutes thinking
about safety and health.
“What was once primarily
a children’s holiday has
now become an event celebrated
by people of all
ages,” said Michael Warren,
MD, MPH, FAAP,
TDH director of Family
Health and Wellness. “We
hope everyone enjoys a
safe, fun evening, and to
help make sure that happens,
we’ve developed a
checklist of best Halloween
practices.”
Costumes:
• Don’t risk eye damage
by wearing decorative contact
lenses. Users of these
lenses may suffer serious
infections and permanent
damage to vision, particularly
among those who
don’t normally wear contacts.
It is illegal in Tennessee
to sell contacts
without a prescription.
• If your costume involves
make-up, test it on
a small area of your skin
prior to Halloween to
make sure you won’t have
an allergic reaction. Be
sure to remove all makeup
before going to bed.
• Avoid costumes with
masks that restrict vision.
• Avoid long dresses or
pants and oversized shoes
that make it hard to walk.
• Remember weather can
change quickly; some costumes
may not provide
warmth needed for a chilly
night.
• Check costume labels
to make sure all pieces are
flame resistant.
• Attach reflective tape
or blinking lights to costumes.
• Costume accessories
such as swords, knives and
similar items should be
soft and flexible.
Trick-or-Treating:
• Be alert to dogs that
may be protective of their
homes or yards. Never give
candy to a pet.
• Walk on sidewalks facing
oncoming road traffic.
• Hold a flashlight, glow
stick or similar lighting device.
• Walk, never run, to
avoid the risk of tripping.
-more-
• Children should only
enter homes if they are
with a trusted adult; it’s
best not to enter a
stranger’s home, even if
they invite you inside.
• Don’t walk near luminary
devices such as candles
or open flames.
• Walk in groups whenever
possible.
• Inspect treats for signs
of tampering, eat only factory-wrapped
treats and
stay away from homemade
items unless you know the
giver. Be mindful some
treats can cause choking or
allergic reactions.
• After trick-or-treating is
done, parents should limit
the amount that can be
eaten daily.
• Tell children if anyone
tries to grab them to yell
loudly and draw attention.
Parties:
• Leave pumpkin carving
to an adult. Let young children
draw faces on pumpkins
with washable
markers or child-friendly
paint.
• If you’re hosting, offer
low-calorie foods emphasizing
vegetables, fruits
and cheeses, and limit sugary
treats and beverages. If
you insist on giving candy
bars, go with the smallest
ones available.
• Remember if you’re
hosting a party for adults
and plan to have alcohol,
make sure no one
overindulges. While no
one should ever drink and
drive, impaired drivers and
costumed children in the
neighborhood are a particularly
dangerous combination.
• If you’re a party guest,
enjoy food and beverage in
moderation; calories can
accumulate quickly. It’s
442-3200
best to eat a healthful meal
before going to the party
so you won’t graze on
sweets or other calorieladen
treats.
• Keep pets away from
guests; even the most
docile ones can become
frightened and defensive
among costumed revelers.
• Instead of candy for
party favors, consider toys,
bags of pretzels, temporary
tattoos, boxed raisins,
trail mix, etc. Stay away
from items that could
cause choking if small children
are invited.
• If your child comes
home with a bag of candy,
consider offering to buy
some from him or her.
That could help combat
weight gain and give a little
one a fun lesson with earn-
ing money.
“The reason so many of
us have good memories of
childhood Halloween
events is because our parents
or other responsible
adults looked out for us,”
Warren said. “It’s time
now for us to look out for
others, making sure observers
of all ages have a
safe and healthy evening.
With just a little extra
thought and planning,
we’ll generate some more
positive memories this
year.”
The mission of the Tennessee
Department of
Health is to protect, promote
and improve the
health and prosperity of
people in Tennessee. For
Female Claims Home
Invasion, Forced Sex
Officers Arrive,
Arrest Female,
Take to Jail
A female who phoned
911 and told dispatchers
that several men had broken
into home and forced
her into sex with them
went to jail on Saturday
for reporting bogus story.
Charged by Sweetwater
Police Sergeant Brandon
Cansler with making 911
calls in a non-emergency
situation was Donna Kay
Seargeant, 50, of North
Cansler said he found
Seargeant “very intoxicated.”
the call to E-911 because
she was worried that her
niece in Athens would be
raped. She said that three
or four men had arrived at
her home the night before
and attempted to rape her.
Seargeant told Cansler
SEATON
Sergeant
that 45 minutes to calling
911 eight or nine men
broke into her house and
tried to rape her.
Cansler said he found
no evidence of a forced
entry.
