UT Extension, Monroe County will offer a Holiday 

Sweet Spreads Workshop on Saturday, November 10, 

2012. Participants will make Cranberry Conserves and 

Reduced Sugar Apple Butter while learning correct procedures 

for safe home canning. The workshop will take 

place from 9 a.m. until noon in Room S13, Lundy Science 

Hall on the Hiwassee College Campus. 

Cost of the course is $20. Participants must pre-register 

by paying at UT Extension, Monroe County by Friday,

Wear said that when he 

awoke him, Wilson’s eyes 

were bloodshot, his 

speech was slurred, he 

acted confused, and he 

performed poorly on sobriety 

tests. A status 

check revealed two prior 

DUI convictions, one in 

Monroe County in September 

2009 and a second 

in Blount County in July 

2010. 

In January 2011, Wilson 

received a conviction as a 

habitual motor vehicle offender. 

A bag found in the vehicle 

– a Toyota Four-Runner 

– held meth 

components, Wear said, 

including a one-pot meth 

lab containing a bi-layer 

liquid, ammonium nitrate, 

and sodium hydroxide, 

Coleman fuel, and drain 

cleaner. As Wilson stood 

near a police cruiser, he 

pulled from his waistband 

and dropped a snorting 

straw and a piece of aluminum 

foil containing a 

white powder of probable 

meth, Wear said. 

As he was placed in

green rubber reptilians 

poured into the water 

ready to race across the 

track. The Madisonville 

Fire Department was on 

hand to help spray the turtles 

toward the finish 

while the Monroe County 

Rescue Squad helped to 

create a wake and catch 

any drifters. The crowd 

waited anxiously to see the 

lucky seven turtles that 

made it to the finish line. 

They didn’t have to wait 

long and the winning turtles 

were whisked away on 

a golf cart to be announced. 

The winners were as 

follows: first place went to 

Pat Keeble, second place 

to Katie Giles, third to 

Gwen Loy, fourth to Yoshi 

Nagami, fifth to Cody 

Proaps, sixth to Craig 

Shallenberger, and seventh 

to Neely Ingram. 

There were many other 

awards to be handed out

Tips For A Healthy Halloween From The Tennessee Department Of Health 

Pumpkins on the porch 

and chatter about costumes 

can only mean one 

thing: Halloween is fast 

approaching. As party 

goers and trick-or-treaters 

plan for a night of fun, the 

Tennessee Department of 

Health suggests spending a 

few minutes thinking 

about safety and health. 

“What was once primarily 

a children’s holiday has 

now become an event celebrated 

by people of all 

ages,” said Michael Warren, 

MD, MPH, FAAP, 

TDH director of Family 

Health and Wellness. “We 

hope everyone enjoys a 

safe, fun evening, and to 

help make sure that happens, 

we’ve developed a 

checklist of best Halloween 

practices.” 

Costumes: 

• Don’t risk eye damage 

by wearing decorative contact 

lenses. Users of these 

lenses may suffer serious 

infections and permanent 

damage to vision, particularly 

among those who 

don’t normally wear contacts. 

It is illegal in Tennessee 

to sell contacts 

without a prescription. 

• If your costume involves 

make-up, test it on 

a small area of your skin 

prior to Halloween to 

make sure you won’t have 

an allergic reaction. Be 

sure to remove all makeup 

before going to bed. 

• Avoid costumes with 

masks that restrict vision. 

• Avoid long dresses or 

pants and oversized shoes 

that make it hard to walk. 

• Remember weather can 

change quickly; some costumes 

may not provide 

warmth needed for a chilly 

night. 

• Check costume labels 

to make sure all pieces are 

flame resistant. 

• Attach reflective tape 

or blinking lights to costumes. 

• Costume accessories 

such as swords, knives and

you insist on giving candy 

bars, go with the smallest

• Remember if you’re 

hosting a party for adults 

and plan to have alcohol, 

make sure no one 

overindulges. While no 

one should ever drink and 

drive, impaired drivers and 

costumed children in the 

neighborhood are a particularly 

dangerous combination. 

• If you’re a party guest, 

enjoy food and beverage in 

moderation; calories can

Cansler said he found 

Seargeant “very intoxicated.” 

She said she made 

the call to E-911 because 

she was worried that her 

niece in Athens would be 

raped. She said that three 

or four men had arrived at 

her home the night before 

and attempted to rape her. 

Seargeant told Cansler
