Piano Team Gives
Lecture-Recital
Dallas Weekley and Nancy Arganbright, a
husband and wife team of concert performers
who are on the music faculty, featured a piano
composition by Franz Schubert, which has probably
never before been played publicly in its
original form, in a lecture-recital at the University
this spring.
Weekley located the original manuscript of
the composition, dated January 1818, in the
Nationalbibliothek in Vienna aQd obtained a
photocopy. The composition was published for
the first time in 1835, after the composer's death,
but was substantially altered. Weekley and his
wife plan to include the selection in their concert
repertoire.
One of the few professional piano-du.ettist
teams in the United States, Weekley and Arganbright
have been at La Crosse since 1965, soon
after they returned from an extensive European
concert tour. They spent several months in
Vienna where Weekley sought out and studied
manuscripts of original one-piano, four-hand
music. The couple also performed on television
from Vienna, and since their return, have appeared
on CBS and ABC from New York and
Chicago. They have twice been guest performers
on the "Captain Kangaroo" program, and have
been invited back for a third appearance late
this spring.
Dallas Weekley· and· Nancy Arganbright met
at Indiana University where both were solo
pianists and students in the School of Music.
Nancy was made a member of Mu Phi Epsilon
and Pi Kappa Lambda (the musical equivalent
of Phi Beta Kappa), and was graduated Cum
Laude. Weekley was a member of Phi Mu Alpha
Sinfonia and Pi Kappa Lambda, holds a
master of music degree from Indiana University
and is currently doing research for his doctorate
dissertation on Franz Schubert.
The Weekleys began giving recitals of onepiano,
four-hand music after their marriage in
1957. They now make annual concert tours
throughout the United States.
Dates have been set for next year's lectures and concerts series. Alumni and friends
are invited to attend these events which are sponsored in part by the student activity fee.
All lectures and concerts will be held in Main Auditorium.
A laugh . . . a smile . . . a stateside touch,
that's what Jacqueline Bray '65, an American
Red Cross clubmobile worker, brings to the
troops in Vietnam.
Each week Miss Bray visits between 15 and
20 military field units providing entertainment,
recreational activities and other ideas to break
up the routine of the fighting men. Some of the
popular events provided by the clubmobile are
chess, checker and card tournaments, folk singing
and team sports.
Before leaving for Vietnam, Miss Bray completed
a two week orientation program in Washington
D.C. which included studies in military
protocol, background on Vietnam and details
regarding the recreation program for servicemen.
The military provides transportation and
security for clubmobile members.
Previously, Miss Bray was a physical education
teacher in Illinois.
game under .500 with a 10 and 11 record this
past season. In conference play the Indians
placed fifth with an 8 and 8 mark. Highlight of
the season was a 102 to 86 win over conference
the past campaign and finished seventh in
the conference me.et. The Indians had one individual
conference champion, Steve Willett of
Madison, who placed first in the 177 pound
division.
In swimming competition the Indians closed
out with a 6 and 6 dual meet r.ecord and finished
sixth in the conference championship. Dave
Lilly, sophomore from Greenfield, was the outstanding
beaten only once in 11 dual meets in the 200
yard individual medley and was the only member
of the team to score 100 points. He also represented
the school in the NAIA meet at St.
Connaughton Turns to Professional Bowling;
Expects to Compete in 20 Summer Tournaments
La Crosse State made its second contribution
to the world of professional bowling this spring
when 22-year-old Jack Connaughton announced
his intention to turn pro. A June graduate, Jack
expects to compete in 20 tournaments during
the summer, beginning with the Seattle Open.
Another former LSU student, Dick Ritger, '60
is a member of the Professional Bowling Association
and is currently one of the leading
money winners on the tour.
During his amateur career Connaughton became
the only collegiate bowler to win the
National AssoCiation of College Unions tournament
twice in a row. He won the second title
in March this year and in the process set two
records, the high three game series, 683, and
total series, 1,253. The win also gav.e him the
right to represent the United States in the world
Page 8
amateur tournament for the second straight
year, but he turned that down in order to become
a professional. In November of 1967 Connaughton
won the world amateur title in Paris.
His bowling for the La Crosse State team in
early April helped the team qualify for the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
tournament in Kansas City. La Crosse won the
championship a year ago and Connaughton
teamed with Ron Hedrich to win the doubles
title during the meet.
Following the National meet Connaughton
signed his pro contract. He will be backed
financially on the tour by South Lanes Inc. of
La Crosse and will call La Crosse his home. His
application for pro status was signed by Ritger,
Dave Davis leading money winner on the '67
tour, and Wayne Zahn, formerly of Milwaukee.
