From the President:
The past year has been an exceptionally good one for the
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Foundation. All of us
associated with UW-La Crosse can be proud of the achievements
of the past year while we look toward the future.
As you read the following pages of this report. you will
certainly be impressed by the level of support the University of
Wisconsin-La Crosse receives from thousands of private donors.
This support exemplifies the generosity. interest and commitment
that must be called '"outstanding'".
Sparked by our alumni's commitment to excellence, the
Foundation achieved a record net worth of over 2 million
dollars. Increased gifts and pledges from alumni, friends and
businesses totaled more than $500,000.00 Corporate
matching gifts are up by 38.5%, Phonothon pledges went up
20% and restricted gifts are up by 41 %. This is a proud record
of achievement for 1983.
Many of those dramatic increases in giving in 1983 can be
attributed to new fund-raising efforts or programs spearheaded,
coordinated or assisted by Foundation staff. The Foundation's
Board of Directors is especially appreciative that Mr. Pat'
Stephens accepted the appointment as Acting Executive
Director. His leadership and administrative skills can be seen in
many of the accomplishments of this past year. Pat accepted the challenge of the Executive Director's duties
after Larry Dittman, who served the Foundation exceptionally well for so many years, resigned to pursue
private business interests.
The Foundation's growth has benefited both students and faculty. Twenty-six new freshmen honor
scholarships were awarded, and new programs were made available to our increasing minority student
population. Many of the almost sixty existing Foundation scholarships had additional contributions made to
them, and our investment performance exceeded our expectations. A variety of worthwhile faculty requests were
funded to help with special projects, travel. research, and publications.
My most personal thank you is extended to the 1983 members of our Foundation Board. These individuals
have contributed their time, talent and treasures. Attendance and participation are at an all time high which
reflects their dedication and commitment to the Foundation's goals.
Perhaps our most rewarding new project for 1983 was the opening of the Thrune Nature Center at
Norskedalen. The highlight of the dedication was the attendance of Mrs. Ethel A. Thrune. The
Foundation and Norskedalen suffered a great loss in 1983 with the death of Mrs. Thrune. It was through her
generosity that the Thrune Nature Center became a reality.
My thanks to the many volunteers from all over the Coulee Region who have worked long hours for the
building and benefit of Norskedalen. The future of Norskedalen depends on the strong commitment of
volunteers. You and I. as volunteer and contributor, are essential to the continuing s.uc.ces.s .of this unique and
beautiful project.
Thank you for enriching the University's programs in 1983. This Annual Report has been prepared to show
how you and other alumni and friends supported excellence on the beautiful campus of UW-La Crosse.

Charles Dickens' opening to "A
Tale of Two Cities" is a fitting
description of student life at La
Crosse. Forget about "the worst of
times." Whether attending the
Normal School, the State Teacher's
College or the University, students
over the institution's 75 years can
look back at their college days and
echo Dickens' words, "It was the
best of times."
What made La Crosse so special
for former students? What still
makes it special? What memories of
their school days do alumni cherish?
Part of the answer is the relationship
built between students and faculty.
Everyone has a favorite teacher, a
favorite story about a faculty
member. For Catherine Roherty, '17,
that teacher was Leonora Thompson.
"The whole student body was so
proud to have Miss Thompson come
from New York to teach us."
Thompson, a dancer in the broadway
musical "Chu, Chin, Chow," left
the stage in 1915 to become a
physical education instructor at La
Crosse Normal. Roherty recalls another
professor, G.H. Heineman,
who organized groups of students to
go out into the community and
provide entertainment. One "performance"
at the La Crosse Country
Club included a Spanish dance. "It
was all very amateurish but we
thought we were wonderful," quips
Roherty.
Otho Bergman, a '34 graduate,
remembers an incident with Bessie
"Bell" Hutchison for whom
Hutchison Hall is named. Bergman's
class was assigned to write a theme
for Hutchison's English course proposing
a campus beautification project.

night and be in by 10 or 10:30 p.m.
on week nights. "A few nights I

Concordia Dance Hall to make the
dorm curfew," says Hujik.

are cooed. They have saunas, game
rooms, microwave ovens, cable
television, exercise rooms and pizza

Mr. Wizard
makes
a
come-back

When Donald Herbert Kemske
graduated from La Crosse State
Teachers College in 1940, he never
imagined his science and drama
degrees could combine to make him
famous.
Donald Herbert Kemske became
Don Herbert, but he was better
known as Mr; Wizard to millions of
people in the baby boom generation.
Between 1951 and 1965, youngsters
watched their televisions in
awe as Herbert conjured up an
understandable approach to science
through simple experiments and
demonstrations.
Herbert, now 66, has returned to
television with a modern version of
the "Watch Mr. Wizard" program
three times a week on the Nickelodeon
children's cable network. He
also returned to his' hometown on
May 19 to receive the UW-La Crosse
Maurice O. Graff Distingished
Alumnus Award, which he'll add to
his collection of honors--a Peabody
Award for the original Mr. Wizard
show, three Thomas Alva Edison
Awards and two Emmy nominations.
Herbert was one of 806 students
enrolled in 1940 at the La Crosse
campus, then made up of only two

buildings. He lived at home while
attending school, belonged to the
Beta Sigma Phi fraternity and was a
member of the Forensics Club. He
appeared in nine college plays including
"Romeo and Juliet" and
"Elizabeth the Queen." He organized
a campus 12-piece band "partly of
college kids and kids I knew in high
school." A guitarist, he often strummed
up some extra money with a
piano-playing friend in city nightclubs.
Served on Racquet
While performing was his first
love, writing was a close second. He
published a literary magazine called
"Potpourri" with other student
writers and served on the Racquet
newspaper staff at the same time as
his sister, Dorothy Kemske, Dorothy
graduated in 1943,

science teacher, Herbert couldn't
discard his acting and writing interests,
After graduation, he did
summer theater work in Wisconsin
and played opposite Nancy Davis-now
Nancy Reagan--in one production.

He put his career on hold during
World War II when he flew 56
missions over Europe as a bomber
pilot.
After the war, Herbert became an
actor on children's radio shows out
of Chicago, then spent eight years
as announcer on the General Electric
Theater, hosted by Ronald Reagan.
Herbert's desire to perform and
write moved him to create the Mr.
Wizard concept, which he first
marketed to Chicago's WMAQ-TV in
1950. The program began as a
magic show to hold the interest of
youngsters who would otherwise
tune out on science. With a child
partner, Herbert's approach was informal
and easily understood. He
showed how to make a compass
from a cork and copper wire,
demonstrated exploding lycopodium
powder and rigged up an air speed
machine.
Herbert says his favorite experiment
of all is still the water-filled
balloon that gets sucked into a glass
jar by starting a fire in the jar. "You
use simple equipment. There's sort

of a dramatic finish when the
balloon is sucked into the jar, and it
poses all kinds of interesting problems
about how to get it out. And
it's easy for children to produce."
When "Watch Mr. Wizard" was
cancelled in 1965, Herbert moved to
another project. A series of half-hour
special science programs for adults
called "Experiment" was aired on 16
noncommercial television stations
but lasted only a year.
Herbert took a break from broadcasting
the next five years, spending
his time writing and producing
classroom science films. Then came
two more projects--an unsuccessful
attempt to reintroduce Mr. Wizard
on NBC in the early 1970s, and "Mr.
Wizard Close-Ups," a series of 30second
inserts for children.
Now, besides the new Mr. Wizard
show on Nickelodeon, Herbert
produces "How About." a series of
80-second programs geared toward
adults. His wife, Norma, is in charge
of syndication and marketing for
"How About," which is seen on
more than 100 television stations
across the country.

Herbert produces his programs
from his Canoga Park, Calif., home
studio, a specially-designed garage
stacked with boxes of scientific
paraphernalia ranging from vacuum
pumps to volcano models.
He works at an exhaustive pace.
His head writer and researcher, Joe
Walders, describes Herbert as a
perfectionist who will do anything
for the benefit of the show. "It's
amazing what he knows," says
Walders. ''I'll come up with what I
think is an original idea and it's
something h!'l's done 20 years ago."
Herbert says the new shows really
haven't changed much from the old
days except they're in color and deal
with more than one subject to step
up the format. He said the biggest
single change in science since the
early shows is the evolution of
computers. Space has also grown
from science fiction to science fact.
"We were there at the introduction
of the space era," he remembers.
"Now we do some of the same
principles, but we certainly don't
bother saying, 'Gee, maybe someday
we'll go to the moon' because we've
already been there and beyond."
Herbert says his biggest satisfaction
from sharing his knowledge is
helping youngsters regard science
as pleasurable, but discounts the
notion he's led students into
science careers. "No half-hour television
show in black and white is
going to have that influence," he
says. "But it may have at least made
them aware of the opportunities."::
Post-season competition highlights winter sports

For the second straight winter
sporting season all seven of the
UW-La Crosse athletic teams were
represented in post-season competition.
One of the top individual performances
came from Jerry Kollross of
the men's swimming team. Kollross,
a senior from Greendale, Wis., concluded
his career by leading the
Indians to a 10th-place finish at the
NAIA Championships and an 18thplace
finish at the NCAA Division III
Championships. Kollross became
UW-L's first individual event national
champion in men's swimming since
1965. Kollross established two
school and national records at the
meet by winning the 50- and 100yard
freestyle events.
The UW-L women's basketball
team continued its long history of
success as they posted its ninth
straight 18-victory season with a 19­
8 record. The team also advanced to
the title game of the NCAA Division
III Great Lakes Region. Senior
Donna Freese of Lancaster, Wis.,
concluded her"Career at UW-L as the
all-time leading rebounder and the
seventh all-time leading scorer with
1.101 rebounds and 912 points,
respectively.
While the women's basketball
team was enjoying its season so
were the men hoopsters under
veteran head coach Burt McDonald.
Men's basketball finished their eighth
15-victory season in the last 10
years by tallying a 15-13 record.
Sophomore Paul Denny of La Crosse
led the team in scoring and in
rebounding with 12.8 points and 5.8
rebounds per game, respectively.
The UW-L wrestling team had
another fine season by placing fifth
at the WSUC Championships and
placed in a tie for the 25th position
at the NAIA Championships. Sophomore
Bret Corner from Cedarburg
was named the team's most valuable
performer as he won the 142-pound
title at the WSUC Championships
and placed sixth at the NAIA
Championships to accord AII­
American honors.
The men's gymnastics team,
paced by three individual event
champions at the NAIA Championships
hosted by UW-L, placed
second in the final national men's

gymnastics meet sponsored by the
NAIA. According national champion
honors from UW-La Crosse were
Todd Tveita of Brooklyn Park, Minn.,
on the still rings; Jim Brick of
Milwaukee, on the parallel bars and
Rob Genadek of St. Louis Park,
Minn., on the horizontal bar.
The women gymnasts also found
success at the national level as
three athletes won All-American
honors. UW-L, which placed second
at the NCAA Division III Championships
and sixth at the NAIA
Championships, featured a balanced
squad this past season. Named AII­
Americans from UW-La Crosse were
Brenda Wanke of Wausau; Val Smith
of Rhinelander; and Joanna Jaquith
of Stevens· Point.

Bette Chambers also peaked at the
end of the season as the team
placed eighth at the NAIA
Championships. Pacing UW-La
Crosse at the national meet was
senior Joan Kapellas of Onalaska,
who placed fifth in two events and
seventh in another event.

Ruth Nixon retires after 38 years at UW-L

No one has to tell Ruth Nixon
about the many changes at UW-La
Crosse over the years. She was an
active part of those changes for
more than half of the university's 75
years. Nixon, professor of Spanish
and a faculty member since 1945,
retired in May after 38 years in the
Foreign Language Department, 19 of
them as department chairman.
When Nixon arrived on campus in
the fall of 1945, she was the only
person teaching a foreign language
at UW-L. She had taught Spanish in
a Michigan high school and welcomed
the chance to teach at the
college level. She remembers being
interviewed for the position by
President Rexford Mitchell personally
and says, "He really gave me the
royal treatment." He met her at the
train and, along with Edith Cartwright,
dean of women, he bought
her dinner.
At first, Nixon taught with an
emphasis on grammar translation,
the accepted method for teaching
foreign language at the time. Since
then, teaching methods and course
content have changed drastically.
"More emphasis is now placed on
audio-lingual skills, meaning listening
and speaking, but even more
than that," she says. Department
offerings have grown to include
courses in foreign literature, civiliza-
tion, business, linguistics and
English as a second language.
Nixon remembers when foreign
languages were relegated to the
periphery of the academic program
even though "historically, they have
been the heart of the program." If
the past decade is any indication,
foreign languages have now regained
their rightful emphasis.
According to Nixon, her department
has experienced steady growth since
the mid-70s for a number of
reasons: increased international
awareness of today's students,
growth in international business
requiring business majors to know a
foreign language, and the emerging
bilingual society in the U.S.
Today's students
Speaking of students over her 38
years at UW-L, Nixon notes that
today's students are more interested
in getting a degree than in pursuing
education for education's sake.
"Today's students are more vocation
or career-oriented than in the past"
says Nixon, "But then that is understandable
with the job rnarket the
way it is."
Nixon always strived to cultivate
close relationships with her students.
Even though her tenure wit-

nessed a 20-fold increase in enrollment,
the department continues to
promote individual attention to its
students. Many students say they
feel "at home" in the department.
Nixon attributes that feeling of
closeness to the fact that teaching a
language involves talking with the
students in class and having students
talk back, which doesn't
happen in large lecture courses.
Looking back over her years at
UW-L, Nixon finds the most satisfying
part of her work has been the
close relationships she has developed
with students and faculty. She
adds that the university setting "is
the most stimulating place to be."
To honor her years at UW-L, a
Ruth A. Nixon Scholarship has been
established by the Sigma Delta Pi
Fraternity. This scholarship is to be
given annually to a next year's
senior majoring in Spanish. It is to
be based on outstanding achievement
and proficiency in Spanish.
The recipient will be selected by
members of the Spanish faculty.
Alumni, especially those who
majored in a foreign language, are
asked to contribute to the scholarship
fund. Checks should be made
payable and sent to the La Crosse
State College Foundation at UW-La

Lillian (Daulton) Olson, '11,
Decorah, Iowa, received a distinguished
service award from the
Norwegian American Museum at
Luther College in Decorah.
Wallace Huber, '14, enjoys an
active retirement in Honolulu,
Hawaii, as a member of The Blue
Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite and
Shrine and the Square and Compass
Club at Hickam Air Force Base.
Jacob Gensmann, '17, Wausau,
is still active in Masonic Lodge,
Shrine Club and church.
The Thirties
Charles Trowbridge, '30, Lodi,
Calif., sends geetings to his classmates
and football team mates of
1926-30. He is involved in coaching
junior soccer, playing golf, landscape
painting, duplicate bridge,
gardening, reading, and helping his
wife with household chores.
Alma Fisher, '34, Milwaukee, has
retired from a 36-year teaching
career. She plans to travel, work on
crafts, and spend time at her home
on Lake Camelot, Wisconsin Rapids.
Woody Bowersock, '35, Orange,
Calif" who competes in the over-70years
age group, won first place in
the 500 and 1650 yard free style
events in the 1983 Short Course
National Masters Swim Meet at Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.
The Forties
Dick Tews, '40, Kinnelon, N.J.,
retired recently. He and his wife plan
to travel in their motor home, and
Dick will pursue the many crafts he
has done through the years.
Jean (Rennebohm) Homburg,
'45, Madison, retired after 16 years
of substitute teaching in elementary
grades.
Grace (Lange) Peterson, '45,
Greenfield, is retired after 25 years
of teaching and is a volunteer in
remedial reading assistance.
Virginia (Waggenor) Grier, '48,
Tempe, Ariz., has been a behavior
learning counselor for severely disturbed
children in Washington
school district, Phoenix, Ariz., for the
last ten years.
Margaret Augustin, '49, Claremore,
Okla., is associate professor of
chemistry at Rogers State College,
which is just outside of Tulsa, Okla.
Irene (Goyer) Kounelis, '49, Elm
Grove, is a school counselor at
Wauwatosa West High School and
also holds a brokers license in real
estate.
AI. '49, and Dorothy (Foster)
Willers, '47, live in Sheboygan. AI is
a counselor at Horace ,Mann Middle
School, and Dorothy is a physical
education instructor at Sheboygan
Falls Junior High School.
The Fifties
Donna (Higgins) Bachman, '52 &
'69, Sebring, Fla., is assistant
principle at Fred Wild Elementary
School. She received a M. Ed. at the
University of Hawaii in 1971 and a
Specialist in Psychology in Florida in
1974.
Charles Odegaard, '52, Seattle,
Wash., was re-elected president and
chairman of the Board of the
American Youth Hostle Association
at the annual meeting held last
November in Washington, D.C.
Dwayne Schmaltz, '52, Waupun,
was recently named administrator of
the new Cooperative Educational
Service Agency (CESA) 6.
Lois (Krubsack) Heyerdahl, '53, is
a horsemanship instructor and
trainer in Sparta. She has been
selected to ride at the 1984 Olympic
trials for the dressage team.
Robert Kime, '54 & '57, Eugene,
Oreg., is professor of school and
community health at the University
of Oregon, Eugene, and has been
selected as a long jump official for
the 1984 Summer Olympics at Los
Angeles.
Marjorie (Sill) Johnson, '57,
Beloit, is working in a Federally
funded program called Youth

Liaison. She is a tutor at Aldrich Jr.
High, Beloit, for students who are on
juvenile police probation.
Sharon (Worman) Bolster, '58,
'68, & '73, Columbia, S.C., earned a
Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin­
Madison in 1981 and is currently a
visiting professor at the University of
South Carolina.
Marilyn (Ocasek) Sullivan, '58, is
president of Colorado Technical
College, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Mary (Winter) Marcou, '59, La
Crosse, recently received a Master of
Education degree and teaches third
and fourth grades at Northern Hills
School in Onalaska.
Sharon (Luethi) Powell, '59,
Tomah, is a physical education instructor
at Tomah Senior High. She
is also girls sports supervisor, girls
tennis and softball coach.
The Sixties
Mary (Fiebig) Panke, '60, Silverton,
Idaho, is manager of a beer and
wine distributorship in Kellogg,
Idaho. She is also the elected
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
the Wallace, Idaho, school district.
Connie Lou (Hagen) Davies, '61,
resides in Cankerra, Australia, with
her husband and three children.
They recently visited family and
friends in Mondovi. Connie teaches
English and physical education to
high school students.
Lorraine (Noguchi) Fukumoto,
'63, teaches third grade in Riverside,
Calif.
Jim Jevens, '64, Camarillo, Calif.,
recently became a business partner
in a local real estate firm. He was
project chairman for the Boys and
Girls Club of Camarrillo Board of
Directors for a gym-activity center
addition and was named volunteer
of the year by the Board.
Mary (Heider) Cicmanec, '65,
Cincinnati, Ohio, is the assistant
dean of medical education at the
University of Cincinnati College of
Medicine.
Kay Hilt, '66, Portland, Oreg., is
director of recreation therapy at
Good Samaritan Hospital.
