On behalf of the faculty of the music department, it is my privilege to welcome you to the
2008 UC Davis Percussion Festival. Today, I’m thrilled to provide you with a front-row view
of humankind’s oldest instrumental tradition: drumming. Whether you are an experienced
percussionist eager to gain critical feedback regarding your own playing or a first-time observer
feeding your curiosity, it is my hope that this year’s festival will expose you to a variety of
musical styles and artists who will spark your interest in sound, rhythm, virtuosity, and
innovation. Once you’re hooked, be sure to check out your program for a list of resources,
including upcoming area percussion concerts, online resources, and percussion organizations
for performers, students, educators, and casual observers.
From tightly wound student ensembles to international recording artists, the next three days of
concerts, master classes, and clinics truly offer something for everyone. I encourage you to dive
in, immerse yourself in the exceptional talents of this year’s renowned guest artist faculty, and
discover for yourself the beauty and excitement of these percussive arts.
