desert <strong>the</strong> above rock is located. It is a<br />

popular location for campers and picnic<br />

parties. Also, <strong>the</strong>re is some legendary history<br />

connected with it.<br />

Readers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Desert</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> will<br />

be interested in knowing more about this<br />

spot, and in order to get <strong>the</strong> best possible<br />

information <strong>the</strong> publishers are <strong>of</strong>fering a<br />

$5.00 cash prize to <strong>the</strong> person who sends<br />

in <strong>the</strong> correct name toge<strong>the</strong>r with all<br />

available information as to <strong>the</strong> location,<br />

highways, distance from nearest settlement,<br />

and any historical or legendary material<br />

available.<br />

The manuscript should be limited to<br />

400 words, and addressed to Landmark<br />

Department, <strong>Desert</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong>, El Centro,<br />

California. The contest closes on <strong>the</strong> evening<br />

<strong>of</strong> November 20, and <strong>the</strong> winning<br />

answer will be published in <strong>the</strong> January<br />

number <strong>of</strong> this magazine.<br />

Each month <strong>the</strong> <strong>Desert</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fers cash prizes to amateur<br />

photographers <strong>of</strong> desert<br />

subjects. These contests are<br />

open to all readers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magazine<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> residence.<br />

The first award is $5.00 and<br />

<strong>the</strong> second $3.00. The pictures<br />

may include any desert subject<br />

photographed on <strong>the</strong> desert.<br />

Close-ups <strong>of</strong> plant and animal<br />

life, unusual personal pictures,<br />

well-composed landscapes and<br />

scenic effects, rock formations,<br />

water holes, oases and recreational<br />

pictures are among <strong>the</strong><br />

subjects suggested.<br />

Following are <strong>the</strong> rules governing<br />

<strong>the</strong> contest:<br />

1—Pictures submitted in <strong>the</strong> November<br />

contest must be received at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Desert</strong><br />

<strong>Magazine</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice by November 20.<br />

2—Not more than four prints may be<br />

submitted by one person in one month.<br />

3—Winners will be required to furnish<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r good glossy enlargements or<br />

<strong>the</strong> original negatives if requested.<br />

4—Prints must be in black and white.<br />

2^4x3^4 or larger.<br />

5—Pictures will be returned only<br />

when postage is enclosed.<br />

For non-prize-winning pictures accepted<br />

for publication $1.00 will be<br />

paid for each print.<br />
