Commitment to... 

the Zoo in 2010 

One word aptly sums up 2010 for FONZ—commitment. 

FONZ staff and volunteers share a deep commitment to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, and it 

manifested in ways both great and small during 2010. They ranged from the smiles that greeted our 

2.3 million visitors to the nearly 82,000 hours contributed by volunteers to the 9.1 million dollars in 

financial and in-kind support that FONZ provided to the Zoo. Yet FONZ’s commitment to the Zoo 

and to conservation runs even deeper than figures can convey. Permit us a few examples. 

Our merchandising team blended commitment with creativity in a program called Change for 

Conservation wherein cashiers asked customers if they would like to donate the change from their 

transactions to conservation efforts. Customers responded with overwhelming enthusiasm, and the 

program raised $30,000. 

Our education staff, meanwhile, continued to reinvigorate their offerings, pioneering a Teacher Boot 

Camp that immersed educators in conservation biology and inspired them to enrich their science 

lessons in vibrant new ways. 

Our event creators served up another year of triumphs, culminating in a bold new approach to 

ZooLights, our holiday festival. Drawing on the talents of the entire organization, planners recast 

ZooLights as a free event, enhanced by refreshments, music, and new attractions. The results were 

stunning. Nearly 80,000 people came to enjoy the lights, more than four times the number for 

the previous year. Their parking fees, refreshment purchases, and souvenir shopping brought in 

considerable revenue. 

Those are just a few examples. You can find many more in the highlights that follow. 

FONZ’s commitment to connecting people to the National Zoo is more important than ever as 

the Zoo continues to face federal budgetary challenges. We are confident that we shall see new and 

greater successes as a result of this unflagging commitment to the Zoo and to the natural world.

Project Blue Planet 

FONZ launches a nationwide educational 

competition that encourages students 

to create projects aimed at improving 

marine environments. It invites students 

to look at recycling, water conservation, 

and related actions that they can take.
