Mangawhai Heads

In Hollywood now when people die they don’t say, “Did he
leave a will?” but “Did he leave a diary?” --Liza Minnelli
OUR MAN OF THE WEEK – Cr JONATHAN LARSEN
One Brave Kaipara District Councillor Puts Up A Website
For over 4 years this newsletter has been circulated almost every week to subscribers. It is certainly far more widely
read than just those on the mailing list. We get feedback from people who have never bothered to subscribe but have
simply bookmarked our website and read it from there.
The newsletter was started as a forum for people living in the Kaipara who expect the Kaipara District Council to display
basic attributes such as honesty, democracy, communication, and above all integrity. It has consistently challenged and
questioned - and also rewarded – the elected and non elected individuals who affect our lives here in the Kaipara.
We were joined in this quest by Clive Boonham with his website Kaipara Concerns which was setup to challenge the
legality of a rating process being applied to some ratepayers in Mangawhai which was questionably kosher. Having
watched the CEO wriggle and jiggle using every ploy in his drawer to avoid dealing with the issue it is pleasing to see
that progress has finally been made. There is still a long way to go and no doubt Clive will keep us up to date with
events. Read more from Clive here.
Now Cr Jonathan Larsen has joined the “brat pack”. His website “The Workboot Councillor” is a breath of fresh air.
Although as a Councillor he will always be bound by the rules of procedure, laws and regulations, Jonathan has had the
courage to lay his principles on the line and use 21 st Century technology to communicate with his “people”.
Looking back over the relatively short life of the Kaipara District Council; any time a Councillor has stepped outside the
square and shown individual initiative, he or she is immediately ring fenced. The Mayor and other Councillors (supported
by the Chief Executive Officer and other
staff) have formed their respective wagons
into a circle and attempted to isolate the
courageous one. It seems that phone
calls cease, e- mails and snail mail
suddenly get lost or misplaced, (as does
correspondence and phone calls from
angry ratepayers) and a campaign of
misinformation and innuendo bubbles forth
from Hokianga Road.
The last victim of these tactics was Bill
Guest. Let’s see how long it takes for
the sniping to start again. Don’t give up
Jonathan. We need more like you for the
probably short time left for this Council to
exist.

STOP PRESS
Good One Whanau
From the Northern Advocate Friday 24 June 2011.
“Two arrested for tying and beating elderly “woman.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10734310
Tops marks to the whanau for convincing these two “scumbags” to hand themselves in to Police.
The only question that really requires an answer is what the hell a 14 year old was doing running wild, with access to a
motor vehicle when several of these incidents occurred at times when he should have been at school! This same 14year-old
faces 22 charges relating to about 10 separate incidents.
Is there no-one in this “child’s” home who notices that he has not been to school, suddenly has a lot of money to spend,
and is coming at going at strange hours in association with a 20year old? “Just going to Aunty’s” for some kai and a few
smokes maybe?
But of course even if you do notice these things you can’t kick his butt or clip his ear any more can you? So why bother.
“Time Out” in a bedroom with TV, play station, phone, computer etc must be a really difficult “punishment to tolerate”.
Yeah right!

comments that you want to share - this is the place to do it. Please ensure that we receive your
letters no later than the Thursday morning before publication. As with other news media, we don’t
don’t want your name to appear please tell us. All letters are published in full as received. Please
keep them to no more than 250 words if possible. Thanks!
We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words. BUT!!! But communication is not supposed to be a guessing
game. Last Sunday’s edition containing the diagram of the districts delights were disappointing I note with dismay the
dismal display Captioned “A Great Place to Stay”
Whoever designed this useless blurb it doesn’t rate very high in my estimation of a PR professional trying to get his/her
message across. One wonders at what cost ? How about spelling Waipoua Forrest correctly. Sloppy work!!!!
Main failings are, none of the pictures are adequately identified. The Pahi camping grounds are completely devoid
of directions on the map which looks more like a medical chart of a patient’s urinary tract complete with a somewhat
unmentionable disease. Alas Poor Pouto!
A few more items of interest could have been included i.e. (Matakohe Museum ) After all isn’t it part of Twin Coast
Discovery ?? Let’s hope the Information Centre can explain things more clearly.
This Week In New Zealand History
1954 Parker-Hulme murder in Christchurch
Armed with a brick in a stocking, 16-year-old Pauline Parker and her best friend Juliet
Hulme, 15, became two of New Zealand’s most notorious murderesses when they killed
Pauline’s mother, Honora, in Victoria Park, Christchurch.
Entangled in a classic folie à deux, the teenagers shared a fantasy world of princes,
damsels, heroes and villains. Dreams of Hollywood stardom were threatened when their
parents decided that the girls’ friendship had become obsessive and co-dependent. Plans
were afoot for Juliet’s family to leave New Zealand.
Their week-long trial was fraught with sensation. Testimony arguing the pair’s insanity was
rejected. The pair were found guilty, sentenced to indefinite imprisonment, and ordered
never to contact each other again.
In a decade when − if the Mazengarb Report is to be believed − teenagers terrorised the
nation, this case drew extraordinary attention both here and overseas. It remains one of
New Zealand’s most infamous murders and lives on in popular culture, having inspired both
a play, Michaelanne Forster’s Daughters of heaven, and Peter Jackson’s Academy Awardnominated
film Heavenly creatures.
The two young women were released after serving about five years in prison. Juliet Hulme later changed her name to
Anne Perry and became a successful writer. Both she and Parker now live in the United Kingdom.
1964 The Beatles land in NZ
were called in when rapturous fans besieged the Beatles’ hotel.
FL Computers.
Beatlemania hit New Zealand when 7000 hysterical
fans greeted the Fab Four in Wellington during their
‘Far East’ tour. After stints in the United States,
Europe, Hong Kong and Australia, the lads from
Liverpool finally touched down in New Zealand.
They came at the start of a new era. During the
60s young New Zealanders, with the help of
broadcast television, were beginning to tune in to
an international youth culture. The Beatles’ fame
preceded them and our teenagers were ready for
action. At Wellington Airport, police struggled to
restrain crowds behind a wire fence. Police dogs
Anybody who believes that the way to a man’s heart is
through his stomach flunked geography. --Robert Byrne
On 22 June the Beatles played their first New Zealand concerts, repeating a 30-minute 11-song set, as fans screamed
and punctured the seats of the Wellington Town Hall with their stiletto heels. Audiences in Auckland, Christchurch and
Dunedin followed suit. Possibly the most dangerous moment of the Far East tour came in Auckland, where the Beatles
faced a mob of several thousand people with little police protection. They were trampled and mauled, and John Lennon
lost a clump of hair.
The tour had a big impact on New Zealand’s rock ’n’ roll and pop music scene. Local artists such as Ray Columbus,
Howard Morrison, and Max Merritt and the Meteors benefited from a surge of interest in the Beatles’ wake.
The Beatles were one of the most famous and commercially successful bands in popular music history. Their quest for
new sounds and the social awareness expressed in their songs were a major influence on pop culture around the world
in the 1960s.
1987 All Blacks win the first World Cup
With Michael Jones, John Kirwan and captain
David Kirk scoring tries, the All Blacks defeated
France 29–9 at Eden Park, Auckland. Kirk
became the first (and so far only New Zealand)
captain to lift the Webb Ellis Cup.
The first Rugby World Cup was hosted by New
Zealand and Australia. Rugby powerhouse
South Africa did not compete due to the
international sports boycott that was in place
because of its apartheid policies.
In the opening match of the tournament All
Black winger John Kirwan ran almost the length
of the field, beating most of the Italian team to
score a memorable try. The All Blacks won 70–6 and went on to win their pool after comfortable victories over Fiji and
Argentina. Their form carried over into the knock-out phase, in which Scotland was defeated 30–3 and Wales 49–6
before the final showdown with France.
The Webb Ellis Cup has since proven to be an elusive holy grail for New Zealand players and fans. Despite dominating
the world rankings, 1987 remains the All Blacks’ only World Cup success. The closest they have come to repeating their
1987 victory came in the 1995 final, which they lost in extra time to South Africa. The All Blacks have also suffered three
semi-final defeats, in 1991, 1999 and 2003. In the 2007 tournament they recorded their worst-ever result in World Cups
when they were defeated by France in the quarter-finals.
