And It’s Goodbye From Us
After three years of almost unbroken publication this is the last edition of Dargaville Online. Our fourth birthday is
on 28th February and this newsletter is going to cease publication in it’s present form from this date.
As a small, volunteer team, we have managed - quite successfully - to get news and views out there. We have
overseas readers who use us to keep in touch with what’s happening in the District. We have upset a few people
by publishing content from other sources – always carefully referenced – which they would prefer was not put into
or discussed in the Kaipara public domain. Where we have received a response to this we have also published the
responses in our next issue. All relevant correspondence received is still available on our Yahoo e-mail address
from our inception.
Detractors of this, and similar newsletters and blogs, need to bear in mind that we still live in a free country where
it remains legal to publish opposing views - provided that this content is accurate, thought provoking, and not

defamatory. While it may not suit some of the “precious, pampered” public servants (thank you Helen Clark for that
delightful description) to be called to account for their actions it remains the right and role of thinking citizens to do
this. Two generations of New Zealand men and women died to maintain this privilege. Let us not forget them or
belittle the principles that they died for.
Originally the intention behind this newsletter was to provide a small, free, local content, e-mailed, publication,
to the people of Dargaville. From an 250 person database that the editor had on his computer, weekly mailings
are now made to more than 2000 subscribers thanks to the assistance of the New Zealand Communities Online
Trust who make mailing this number of newsletters out possible. We have consistently tried to avoid being seen
as “spam” however one or two Internet Service Providers treat our mailings as such. Pity! The business listings on
the footers are provided free to those who have supported Dargaville Online from its inception. No money or “free”
services are provided by the advertisers to the editor or other members of the team.
Sadly, like so many other things in this town, much of the input for Dargaville Online has come from outside of
Dargaville so the present name seems inappropriate. From next week a new newsletter will appear instead called
“The Kaipara Konnection”. We hope that this will entice even more of you from inside and outside of Dargaville to
let us know what’s happening in your community and share your views with us.
So Its “Over and Out” From Dargaville Online. Hello The Kaipara Konnection!
Communication
The disastrous events of this week in Christchurch have demonstrated – as if that is needed – just how powerful,
effective, and speedy modern communications are (and how reliant we are on electricity to keep things rolling)
When President John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, an RNZAF Canberra bomber flew to Sydney to
collect the “TV tape” which was then shown on New Zealand television on successive nights – AKTV2, WNTV1,
CHTV3, DNTV4. Things have moved a long way since then. On Tuesday 22nd February we were able to watch
live footage “streaming” to our computers and televisions of events in Christchurch as they unfolded.
And now some comments on local performance. This newsletter receives regular updates from all the Northland
Councils - except the Kaipara District Council. Maybe this is because we have for the last three years questioned
actions and decisions by the KDC and it’s staff? Maybe our e-mail address has been inadvertently removed from
the press release database? Or is it simply because the Kaipara District Council don’t know how to communicate
in the 21st Century? Have a look at their (boring -1990’s) website. http://www.kaipara.govt.nz Nothing there on
the front page extending sympathy, offers of help, or offers of accommodation etc, for the people of Christchurch.
Enter the words Christchurch or earthquake in the search field and guess what comes up! NOTHING!
Apparently no word either from the Mayor of the Kaipara District in the local daily newspaper or elsewhere about
the event. Why not? We are part of Northland and also New Zealand so surely there is an obligation on our
elected representative to publicly offer condolences and let the residents of the District know that this has been
done on their behalf.
In his election campaign the Mayor promised a “new look” in the performance of Kaipara District Council and it’s
staff. Would a competent person with skills in effective communications be a useful addition to the Council? But
All this talk by the KDC from time to time regarding “Consultation
with ratepayers and residents of the Kaipara District” seems to be
quite frankly a load of nonsense. The latest Council Newsletter put out (always together with a smiling portrait of
our Mayor) features a n article of where we can walk our pooch” which in the title itself denigrates our pet animals
to a large extent ie; “Love me love my dog.”
Pahi has for ages had a “Dogs allowed only on leashes” rule and for years the beaches were festooned by
expensive looking painted signs showing clearly a human being towed by a canine companion .There were no
problems then and the number which are exercised by their local owners prove to be no problem just now. The
question arises .How far does Pahi Beach extend? There is no sand to wallow in.
So now the Mayoral Mace has fallen mercilessly on the luckless mans best friend. Ditch thy dog!
Woe betide the ball chasing bitch breasting the tide to bound along these out of bounds beaches.
A question of Health perhaps? Well known fact, dogs entice owners to walk thus benefitting both.
Dogs are registered (cash in the coffers of the KDC) Owners are not.
1.9 million dollars is to be spent on a proposed 97 km cycle track. Healthy exercise. On yer Bike Mike.
There are more deaths caused by cycles than deadly dogs. Duh! Not healthy!
For a Council who has abysmally failed to get rid of a wasp nest. (TV News http://tvnz.co.nz/fair-go/wasps-6-16video-4031102
) A basis for a Dibley script perhaps? It might be advised to avoid a hornets nest with this one! Dog
owners vote also y’know!
For your information I don’t happen to own a dog but I reckon they (owners /dogs) need a fair go.
family ticket for 6 students from the Dargaville Intermediate School. That was about 13th December. That would
have cost $285.00. I explained that these children were from low income families. No answer so I sent another
email.
During the school holidays. Scott emailed me to say that he had bought this question up at the last meeting and
was waiting for a reply. Finally he sent an email to tell me to go ahead and buy the ticket and he would take the
brunt of the result. Ten minutes later I got another email from Scott to say that the Management team has said
no that I couldn’t buy a ticket for these children. I was terribly disappointed and so were the children concerned. I
asked one of the management team why they had said no to the ticket and she said that if they let me buy a family
ticket then everyone will want one.
Hello I could see the dollars flitting away. I asked another member of the team weeks later and he said that I will
not be allowed to buy a family ticket for these children as they come from different families. Family/whanau same
thing, they are all related to each other. He said that they would have to make a special ticket to accommodate
these children.
It is now the 21st February and still no answer. I would have bought a ticket for all my three schools. That is
$285.00 times three. Can we afford to discriminate against certain members of our community? I think not!! Also
when is the Pool management committee going to advertise when meetings are being held, so that members of
the community can attend? Transparency is a good thing.
PS I asked what constitutes a family and the lifeguard said a mother father and two children. This is not the real
world?
Just a thought.
It would be interesting to see how much the tourist is paying per day for the Campervans. As from what I have
heard it is no wonder they don’t have much left over for anything else. The other day we had a Maui camper van
in with a couple from Switzerland “Nice New Big” Maui. They went down the beach for a long walk (our beach is
112kms long) they came back in a panic, they lost their keys. I said don’t panic you are in NZ it will be ok.
About 8 hours later 9.30pm a set of keys arrive driven 3 hours up from Auckland. IT IS GOING TO COST THEM
OVER $1,000. Mercedes campervans coming from Germany only have 2 sets of keys apparently and they are
very electronic and cannot be duplicated. Their Bond for the Maui was $5000 or $7000 I believe.
I and others were so embarrassed as a kiwi that these costs where Soo high. The result was that our local
Wonderful restaurant Funky Fish shouted them a lovely meal and drinks( as everything they owned was in the
camper)we had already given them a cabin and drinks they refused to borrow some cash from us.
They left Baylys Beach which was their last nite in NZ very happy and very grateful. Happy ending and a lesson
learnt. Maui key cost heaps so don’t lose them.
I ponder over this now. What happens to the next person who hires that campervan if they lose their keys and
there are no other keys in NZ??? And What would have happened if these people had lost them in Christchurch
and the other set of keys where in Auckland??? As it was they had to pay for 6 hours wages to the person who
brought them up from Auckland.
Feel free to pass this on.
1844 ‘Pistols at dawn’: deadly duel in Wellington
William Brewer, a Wellington lawyer, died on 4 March 1844 of wounds
received in a duel with another lawyer, H. Ross, on 26 February. The duel
was the result of a quarrel that had arisen from a case in the Wellington
County Court.
When the two men faced off in Sydney Street, Brewer fired into the air but
‘received Mr. Ross’ ball in the groin’. According to the New Zealand Gazette
and Wellington Spectator, Brewer was ‘immediately conveyed to a friend’s
house. During the first few days it was hoped that his life was safe, but
appearances afterwards became unfavourable, and on Monday last, about
six in the evening Mr. Brewer breathed his last.’
A Coroner’s Inquest was convened. Although there were several witnesses to the duel, the inquest concluded that
the evidence did not prove by whom the wound was inflicted. The survivor of a duel could be charged with murder,
which may explain why the witnesses were not entirely forthcoming in the evidence they gave. Or perhaps it was
a case of ‘what happens on the duelling field stays on the duelling field.’ The New Zealand Gazette and Wellington
Spectator of 9 March used the outcome of this inquest to call for the banning of the ‘barbarous custom’ of duelling.
Brewer was no stranger to duelling. In 1840 he had ‘threatened to call out the next man’ who associated him with
a certain ‘young lady’. John Kelly, a surveyor, was that man. In a duel with Brewer on Oneroa Beach at Kororareka
(now Russell), Kelly had a narrow escape from serious injury when part of his wig was shot away.
1902 Kelburn cable car opens
Wellingtonians flocked in thousands to try out the new cable car service between Lambton Quay and Kelburn
when it opened for business in February 1902.
The Kelburn & Karori Tramway Company Ltd had been formed in 1898 by shareholders in the Upland Estate
Company, which wanted to develop the hills above Wellington’s central business district for housing. Convenient
transport was a vital part of the plan. A cable car service and horse-drawn carriages would connect the new suburb
with the city and the borough of Karori.
James Fulton’s design was a milestone in New Zealand engineering. The line
was 785 m long and climbed 119 m, an average gradient of 1 in 6.6. It passed
through three tunnels and over three short viaducts. The journey from the
Lambton Quay terminus to the top of the hill at the north end of Upland Road
took just 3½ minutes.
A steam engine powered the cable winding gear from a two-storey
powerhouse at the upper terminus. This drove an endless wire rope that
operated alternately up one line of track and down the other. The car drivers
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone,
but they’ve always worked for me. --Hunter S. Thompson
gave bell signals to an engineer in the winding room to apply the gripper lever for the descending cable car. This
lever gripped the cable so that as this car descended, a second cable – the tail, or balance rope – hauled the
ascending car upwards. When the cars reached the top and bottom respectively, the rope stopped moving.
The tramway took 2½ years to complete. As well as paid labourers, men from the nearby Terrace Gaol also
worked on its construction.
The cable car was a significant and enduring engineering achievement. It fulfilled its intended role by helping to
open up the Kelburn area for housing (those who purchased the first sections in 1902 were rewarded with free
passes), and has since become one of Wellington’s iconic tourist attractions.
1951 Troops deployed in waterfront dispute
The waterfront dispute of 1951 was the biggest industrial confrontation in
New Zealand’s history. Although it was not as violent as the Great Strike
of 1913, it lasted longer – 151 days, from 15 February to 15 July – and
involved more workers. At its peak, 22,000 waterside workers (wharfies) and
other unionists were off the job.
Sid Holland’s National government declared a state of emergency on 21
February. The following day Holland warned that New Zealand was ‘at war’.
On the 27th, troops were sent onto the Auckland and Wellington wharves
to load and unload ships. Draconian emergency regulations imposed rigid
censorship, gave police sweeping powers of search and arrest and made it
an offence for citizens to assist strikers – even giving food to their children was outlawed.
As the dispute dragged on into the autumn and winter, there was widespread intimidation and sporadic outbursts
of violence. On the night of 30 April a railway bridge near Huntly was dynamited. Train drivers were warned in
advance and no one was hurt, but coal supplies were severely disrupted. Prime Minister Holland denounced this
as ‘an infamous act of terrorism’.
On several occasions, unionist street protests were broken up by ranks of baton-wielding police. The worst
incident occurred in Auckland on 1 June – dubbed ‘Bloody Friday’ – when police violently dispersed up to 1000
marchers in Queen Street. One victim suffered a suspected fractured skull and 20 others had to be treated for
lacerations, concussion and bruises.
By the end of May, with new unions of strike-breakers (denounced by unionists as ‘scabs’) registered in the main
ports, the wharfies’ position was becoming increasingly hopeless. Eventually, after a five-month struggle, they
conceded defeat on 15 July.
Disasters and Computer Vulnerability.
The sad events of the Christchurch earthquake highlight just how vulnerable we are to loss of computer data in
the modern world. Businesses, organisations, and clubs rely on computers to generate, receive, and store data
relating to their operations. All too often these are single computers, tucked away in a corner of a building or home,
with the data sitting on the hard disk drive and not backed up. If there is a backup it is often stored in the same
place/room as the computer. Then disaster strikes! Fire, earthquake, theft, or simply the death or resignation of a
key person and all this data is lost – usually forever.
it’s easy to impress. --Pamela Anderson
There are many ways of preventing this problem today. Removable storage devices that can be taken home,
stored in another location, or even on a key ring are all available at a minimal cost today.
Then of course there is the “cloud” which can be used for many practical data storage uses. Free mail programs
such as Hotmail, “Yahoo, and Gmail offer data storage capability up to 1GB. While this may not be enough for a
large business database and payroll, it is usually more than adequate for a small business, organisation or club.
For business data, just e-mail your accounting program tables up to an address you have created each night
before you go home. Copy all your e-mail and contact lists up there also. Create a simple spreadsheet which
tracks your business activity for the day and send this off as an e-mail to your “cloud” address. You can log in and
delete back copies every week, month or year to keep within your 1GB limit. You can even download this data and
archive it onto a DVD or similar device for long term storage.
For clubs and organisations, create a club e-mail address on one of these free service providers sites, and insist
that your secretary uses this for all inward and outwards correspondence rather than their private e-mail address.
That way if the person resigns or dies, or their home computer is destroyed or lost, you still have all your club data
intact. If you are an active club or organisation and need more than 1GB of data storage, you can “buy” larger
cloud storage capability for a few dollars each month.
and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.
2.Dice garlic and cut all remaining beef and vegetables into very thin slices.
3.Cook steak in wok until it is done to your liking. Remove steak to serving dish.
4.Place mushrooms, garlic and a splash of cooking oil in wok. Cook over high heat, stirring constantly, for 3
minutes.
Peppercorn Steak Sauce
2 Tbsp butter
1 medium onion, finely diced
60 ml brandy
2 Tbsp/ 30g green peppercorns in brine, roughly sliced
250ml UHT cream
1 Tbsp/ 15ml Worcestershire sauce
1. Heat butter in pan and sauté onion on low heat for 3-4 minutes until opaque.
2. Add brandy and reduce by half. (1 minute or so cooking time for this quantity)
3. Add sliced peppercorns, cream and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for approximately 5
minutes. Season with a little salt.
4. Warm to serve over steak.
*Note…
This sauce keeps well in the fridge ‘as is’ for a few weeks. This will also freeze well. If you would prefer a
mushroom sauce then omit the peppercorns. At step 1 after cooking the onions then add 1 Tbsp butter and 1 cup
of finely sliced bon mushrooms. Sauté with the onions for a few minutes until softened.
When adding the UHT cream the sauce the sauce will thicken instantly but if you cook it out it will thin down again.
The sauce once heated is the perfect density to pour over steak and the peppercorns age well in the sauce after a
few days.
Some Music Trivia
*In 1957, Disc Jockey Al Priddy of KEX, Portland, Oregon, was fired for violating the radio station’s ban against
playing Elvis Presley’s rendition of “White Christmas.” After hearing reports that many U.S. radio stations had
banned Elvis’ Christmas album because of their shock over “the Pelvis” singing religious songs, DJ Allen Brooks
of CKWS in Kingston, Ontario, played the entire album and invited listeners to call in their opinion. Of 800 callers,
only 56 disapproved of Presley’s sacred music.
*Each KISS member represents a character. Simmons is The Demon, Frehley is The Spaceman, Stanley is The
Star Child, Criss is The Cat, and Carr was The Fox. Vincent briefly wore makeup with an Ankh design in his early
concerts with the group.
*” No Woman No Cry”, Bob Marley’s first hit was released as a single from his album, Live!, which was recorded at
the Lyceum in London in 1975. Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the group the year before this was released. They
were upset at the way Bob Marley was given top billing.
