Our fourth birthday is on 28th February and this newsletter is going to cease publication in it’s present form from this date. As a small, volunteer team, we have managed - quite successfully - to get news and views out there. We have overseas readers who use us to keep in touch with what’s happening in the District. We have upset a few people by publishing content from other sources – always carefully referenced – which they would prefer was not put into or discussed in the Kaipara public domain. Where we have received a response to this we have also published the responses in our next issue. All relevant correspondence received is still available on our Yahoo e-mail address from our inception. Detractors of this, and similar newsletters and blogs, need to bear in mind that we still live in a free country where it remains legal to publish opposing views - provided that this content is accurate, thought provoking, and not

While it may not suit some of the “precious, pampered” public servants (thank you Helen Clark for that delightful description) to be called to account for their actions it remains the right and role of thinking citizens to do this. Two generations of New Zealand men and women died to maintain this privilege. Let us not forget them or belittle the principles that they died for. Originally the intention behind this newsletter was to provide a small, free, local content, e-mailed, publication, to the people of Dargaville. From an 250 person database that the editor had on his computer, weekly mailings are now made to more than 2000 subscribers thanks to the assistance of the New Zealand Communities Online Trust who make mailing this number of newsletters out possible. We have consistently tried to avoid being seen as “spam” however one or two Internet Service Providers treat our mailings as such. Pity! The business listings on the footers are provided free to those who have supported Dargaville Online from its inception. No money or “free” services are provided by the advertisers to the editor or other members of the team. Sadly, like so many other things in this town, much of the input for Dargaville Online has come from outside of Dargaville so the present name seems inappropriate. From next week a new newsletter will appear instead called “The Kaipara Konnection”. We hope that this will entice even more of you from inside and outside of Dargaville to let us know what’s happening in your community and share your views with us. So Its “Over and Out” From Dargaville Online. Hello The Kaipara Konnection! Communication The disastrous events of this week in Christchurch have demonstrated – as if that is needed – just how powerful, effective, and speedy modern communications are (and how reliant we are on electricity to keep things rolling) When President John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, an RNZAF Canberra bomber flew to Sydney to collect the “TV tape” which was then shown on New Zealand television on successive nights – AKTV2, WNTV1, CHTV3, DNTV4. Things have moved a long way since then. On Tuesday 22nd February we were able to watch live footage “streaming” to our computers and televisions of events in Christchurch as they unfolded. And now some comments on local performance. This newsletter receives regular updates from all the Northland Councils - except the Kaipara District Council. Maybe this is because we have for the last three years questioned actions and decisions by the KDC and it’s staff? Maybe our e-mail address has been inadvertently removed from the press release database? Or is it simply because the Kaipara District Council don’t know how to communicate in the 21st Century? Have a look at their (boring -1990’s) website. http://www.kaipara.govt.nz Nothing there on the front page extending sympathy, offers of help, or offers of accommodation etc, for the people of Christchurch. Enter the words Christchurch or earthquake in the search field and guess what comes up! NOTHING! Apparently no word either from the Mayor of the Kaipara District in the local daily newspaper or elsewhere about the event. Why not? We are part of Northland and also New Zealand so surely there is an obligation on our elected representative to publicly offer condolences and let the residents of the District know that this has been done on their behalf. In his election campaign the Mayor promised a “new look” in the performance of Kaipara District Council and it’s staff.
