There are many ways of preventing this problem today. Removable storage devices that can be taken home,
stored in another location, or even on a key ring are all available at a minimal cost today.
Then of course there is the “cloud” which can be used for many practical data storage uses. Free mail programs
such as Hotmail, “Yahoo, and Gmail offer data storage capability up to 1GB. While this may not be enough for a
large business database and payroll, it is usually more than adequate for a small business, organisation or club.
For business data, just e-mail your accounting program tables up to an address you have created each night
before you go home. Copy all your e-mail and contact lists up there also. Create a simple spreadsheet which
tracks your business activity for the day and send this off as an e-mail to your “cloud” address. You can log in and
delete back copies every week, month or year to keep within your 1GB limit. You can even download this data and
archive it onto a DVD or similar device for long term storage.
For clubs and organisations, create a club e-mail address on one of these free service providers sites, and insist
that your secretary uses this for all inward and outwards correspondence rather than their private e-mail address.
That way if the person resigns or dies, or their home computer is destroyed or lost, you still have all your club data
intact. If you are an active club or organisation and need more than 1GB of data storage, you can “buy” larger
cloud storage capability for a few dollars each month.

A Computer Joke
As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. My wife Gay had a problem yesterday
and I was out somewhere, so she called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control
and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.
