CWG

Mandate
• Identify cables installed in the accelerators
– their existing ownership
– propose owners for the orphan cables, with the
required resources.
• Define a coherent CERN-wide policy for the definition,
installation, maintenance and removal of all cables in the
Accelerator tunnels and associated buildings.
• The Group will report to the A&T Sector management.
• CWG members
• Full mandate

Strategy
1. Information survey to collect basic information from all Groups
2. Agree on the definition of a cable owner
3. Use points 1 & 2 to identify, where possible, the cable owners.
4. For all “orphan cables” agree on, or propose, a cable owner.
5. Examine existing documentation in order to make
recommendations concerning the centralisation of cabling
documentation and, in particular, cable layouts.
6. With recommendations from 5 define a strategy for the installation,
replacement and removal of cables (In collaboration with the
Working Group on the “Replacement of Irradiated and Ageing
Cables”)

Information survey
• Most cables (>20m) are specified by Groups
– Exceptions; DC power cables for magnets & some common
signal and fibre optic cables between SPS BA’s
• Installed and documented by EN/EL.
– Exceptions; TE/CRG, GS/ASE and RP (external contractors)
• Many Groups also keep their own documentation,
– additional information complement to EL database
• There is no policy for removal of old, unused, obsolete
cables… so they are left in place
– Removal occurs in a few cases (TE/ABT, dedicated cable
replacement campaigns in SPS…)

Where are we?
replacement and removal of cables (In collaboration with the
Working Group on the “Replacement of Irradiated and Ageing
The Cable Owner is the Group who requests and specifies the cable
installation.
