THE PAROUSIA IN MODERN THEOLOGY 53<br />

attitude which is expressed <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> conduct. 86 Expect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a friend to come to tea at four o'clock entails not so much a<br />

particular mental state, as do<strong>in</strong>g appropriate th<strong>in</strong>gs like<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> date <strong>in</strong> my diary, lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> table at half past three,<br />

wonder<strong>in</strong>g whe<strong>the</strong>r he smokes and putt<strong>in</strong>g out an ashtray, and<br />

so on. If I "expect" <strong>some</strong>th<strong>in</strong>g good to happen soon, I may<br />

not have an image of its occurrence ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> my m<strong>in</strong>d for a<br />

number of days; but I may be found humm<strong>in</strong>g a tune, or<br />

whistl<strong>in</strong>g, even though "while I whistled I wasn't th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

him". 87 In <strong>the</strong> same way, belief <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> imm<strong>in</strong>ence of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>parousia</strong> is not primarily a conscious mental state which has<br />

to be susta<strong>in</strong>ed with effort. It is a practical attitude. Paul ex-<br />

presses it <strong>in</strong> 1 Cor<strong>in</strong>thians 7 <strong>in</strong> terms of sitt<strong>in</strong>g light to <strong>the</strong><br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> world, and look<strong>in</strong>g beyond <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> future<br />

goal. It is wait<strong>in</strong>g on God and liv<strong>in</strong>g life <strong>in</strong> a way which<br />

acknowledges his sovereignty as Lord over time, and which<br />

trusts him as <strong>the</strong> faithful One who will perform his promises.<br />

Such an attitude is nei<strong>the</strong>r peculiar to <strong>the</strong> first century nor<br />

obsolete now. It looks to <strong>the</strong> moment, as Pannenberg and<br />

Moltmann have rem<strong>in</strong>ded us, when God <strong>in</strong> Christ will be<br />

revealed not only as Lord of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual believer, or even<br />

of Israel and <strong>the</strong> Church, but as Lord of all peoples and all<br />

history, v<strong>in</strong>dicated and adored.<br />
