VI. Jews <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Gentiles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Early Church<br />

There is no disguis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early days of <strong>the</strong> Christi<strong>an</strong><br />

Church <strong>the</strong>re were serious differences of op<strong>in</strong>ion regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

grounds on which Gentiles could be accepted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Christi<strong>an</strong><br />

community. Both Paul (Gal. 2:12) <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Acts (11:2) refer <strong>in</strong> identical<br />

terms to ‘<strong>the</strong> circumcision party’ (hoi ek peritomēs), a group usually<br />

labelled ‘Judaisers’ by modern scholars. It is import<strong>an</strong>t to note that<br />

those who belonged to this group did not object to Gentiles becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

members of <strong>the</strong> church. But <strong>the</strong>ir th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g followed <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es of<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporation: only through circumcision <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> accept<strong>an</strong>ce of <strong>the</strong> full<br />

obligations of <strong>the</strong> Torah, i.e. only by becom<strong>in</strong>g a proselyte <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> a<br />

naturalised Jew could a Gentile enter <strong>the</strong> Christi<strong>an</strong> community. This<br />

was probably <strong>the</strong> view favoured <strong>in</strong>itially by James, Peter <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> most of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jerusalem community. Yet it was <strong>the</strong> view which lost out at <strong>the</strong><br />

Council of Jerusalem of which we have account <strong>in</strong> Acts 15.<br />

The view which was approved by <strong>the</strong> council, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> which<br />

became <strong>the</strong> accepted New Testament view was that Gentiles are to be<br />

accepted as members of <strong>the</strong> people of God on <strong>the</strong> basis of faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

proclamation of <strong>the</strong> gospel but without <strong>the</strong> requirements of<br />

circumcision or full Torah observ<strong>an</strong>ce. In most people’s m<strong>in</strong>ds this is<br />

<strong>the</strong> view associated with Paul; he certa<strong>in</strong>ly championed it, but he did<br />

not orig<strong>in</strong>ate it. The Book of Acts goes out of its way to emphasise<br />

Peter’s accept<strong>an</strong>ce of Gentile converts before recount<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>y<br />

missionary outreach by Paul (Acts 10,11). 35 Acts, however, also<br />

preserves traditions from <strong>the</strong> early years of <strong>the</strong> Church which make it<br />

clear that historically <strong>the</strong> Gentile mission orig<strong>in</strong>ated nei<strong>the</strong>r with Paul<br />

nor with Peter but with <strong>the</strong> Hellenists. 36 As I have attempted to show<br />

elsewhere 37 it was this group with <strong>the</strong>ir more radical views on temple<br />
