SCOBIE: Israel <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nations 285<br />
It is highly signific<strong>an</strong>t that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al c<strong>an</strong>onical shape of<br />
Scripture, <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first eleven chapters of Genesis is on <strong>the</strong><br />
created order, on <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> prehistory of all hum<strong>an</strong>k<strong>in</strong>d. The call<br />
of Abram <strong>in</strong> Genesis 12 is related to God’s deal<strong>in</strong>gs with <strong>the</strong> <strong>nations</strong><br />
<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> is placed specifically <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of <strong>the</strong> dis<strong>in</strong>tegration of hum<strong>an</strong><br />
society <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> dispersion of <strong>the</strong> <strong>nations</strong> <strong>in</strong> Genesis 11. 5 The c<strong>an</strong>on<br />
ends, <strong>in</strong> Revelation, with a book <strong>in</strong> which God’s purposes are equally<br />
related to <strong>the</strong> whole created order, so that concern for people of ‘every<br />
nation <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> tribe <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> tongue <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> people’ (Rev. 14:6) forms a gr<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />
envelope structure fram<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> entire story of Scripture.<br />
If, with <strong>the</strong> call of Abram, <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Testament<br />
shifts to God’s election of <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>gs with a chosen people,<br />
never<strong>the</strong>less <strong>the</strong> concern for <strong>the</strong> entire created order is never lost sight<br />
of. It cont<strong>in</strong>ually resurfaces—<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Psalms, 6 <strong>in</strong> Deutero-Isaiah, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>,<br />
as much recent work <strong>in</strong> Biblical Theology has rem<strong>in</strong>ded us, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Wisdom literature. 7 Attention has often been called to <strong>the</strong> ‘universal’,<br />
or at least potentially universal elements <strong>in</strong> Israel’s faith. Belief <strong>in</strong><br />
one God before whom <strong>the</strong> gods of <strong>the</strong> <strong>nations</strong> are as noth<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> a God<br />
who is <strong>the</strong> creator of <strong>the</strong> entire universe, <strong>in</strong> a God whose moral law is<br />
b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g on all hum<strong>an</strong>k<strong>in</strong>d—<strong>the</strong>se const<strong>an</strong>tly express a concern not<br />
only with <strong>the</strong> people of Israel but with all <strong>nations</strong> of <strong>the</strong> earth. 8<br />
Moreover, at least at some key po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Testament<br />
<strong>the</strong> call of Israel is related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>nations</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> same text <strong>in</strong> which<br />
God promises Abram ‘I will make of you a great nation’, God also<br />
says, ‘In you shall all <strong>the</strong> families of <strong>the</strong> earth be blessed’ (Gn.<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> events.’
