SCOBIE: Israel <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nations 297<br />
<strong>the</strong> central affirmation of <strong>the</strong> New Testament, paradoxical though it<br />
may seem, is that with <strong>the</strong> Christ Event <strong>the</strong> New Order has already<br />
dawned. The Old Testament promises are <strong>in</strong> process of be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fulfilled. Christi<strong>an</strong>s ‘are liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>terim period which already<br />
belongs to <strong>the</strong> end, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> yet still forms part of “this present age”’. 39 If<br />
<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al victory still lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future, never<strong>the</strong>less God’s reign has<br />
already been <strong>in</strong>augurated. Thus <strong>the</strong> time for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />
Gentiles is now, even though this may only be fully accomplished at<br />
<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al consummation. God’s concern for <strong>the</strong> whole created order is<br />
now fully m<strong>an</strong>ifest.<br />
It is a probable suggestion that <strong>the</strong> Hellenists were among <strong>the</strong><br />
first to grasp this vital <strong>the</strong>ological truth, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> if we ask what conv<strong>in</strong>ced<br />
<strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong> new age had dawned <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>an</strong>swer<br />
must surely be <strong>the</strong>ir underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><strong>in</strong>g of Jesus’ resurrection <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
experience of <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, <strong>the</strong> resurrection <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> gift of <strong>the</strong> Spirit<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g major marks of <strong>the</strong> new age. 40<br />
Despite <strong>the</strong> widely vary<strong>in</strong>g treatments of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
various ‘<strong>the</strong>ologies’ of <strong>the</strong> New Testament <strong>an</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g unity of<br />
thought is visible.<br />
In Mat<strong>the</strong>w 41 <strong>the</strong> emphasis lies on <strong>the</strong> ‘Great Commission’<br />
which climaxes <strong>the</strong> Gospel (Mt. 28:18-20). Whatever we th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />
<strong>the</strong> basis of this say<strong>in</strong>g, 42 <strong>the</strong>ologically what is signific<strong>an</strong>t is that <strong>the</strong><br />
comm<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> is not ascribed to <strong>the</strong> historical Jesus, but to <strong>the</strong> risen Christ.<br />
It is <strong>the</strong> completion of <strong>the</strong> Christ Event which signals <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>auguration<br />
