FAREWELL TO GOVERNOR MARCELLAS GOLDMAN
PICNIC

The school is sad to take leave of Mr Marcellas Goldman, a governor
at the school since 2006! He has served the school with distinction
and the SGB took leave of him at the Staff Awards Ceremony
on 23/1/2013. His son, Stefan, matriculated with a Bachelor’s Pass
last year. Marcellas served on several portfolios including Finances,
Discipline [as Chairperson] and Grounds & Buildings and had a
stint as Chairperson during the 1st
term of 2012.
I am obliged to call a by-election within
90 days of the start of 2013. Watch this
space for details as the vacancy must,
by law be filled.
The SGB thanks him for his superb service
to Henshilwood.
ATHLETICS ARRANGEMENTS
ACADEMIC TOP TEN AND RESULTS 2011
B-league zonals take place on 7 February and arrangements
are as follows: buses will leave at 06:30 [athletes] and
at 07:30 for spectators. The cost of the bus fare and the entry
for spectators is R 50 per pupil [Bellville]. ALL moneys must
be paid by 4 February as buses need to be confirmed. Pupils
who do not attend the zonals will be at school as normal under
staff supervision. It will be a long, hot day and parents are
encouraged to stay in contact with their children to see when
the buses depart from Bellville. Last year we were delayed by hours—completely at the mercy of
the officials managing the championship. We are competing against
some of athletics’ big guns. Our best wishes accompany our athletes
as they represent their school with pride.
Pupils who let the school down at the inter-house by not pitching or
failing to participate will not be allowed to go to zonals. It is considered
a privilege wearing the brand’s colours as well as supporting our team.

to avoid disappointment. You MUST
produce your ticket at the pool/gate
on the day. NO ticket, no
entry. No outsiders who are
over-age. No vehicles on
the premises. All pupils at
the Ball are to be dropped
off at the gate where members
of the SGB and PTA
will be on duty. Code of
Conduct applies. NO RE-
FUNDS or pass outs. The
Ball ends at 11:45 and no
supervision will take place
after mid-night.

TERM 1 VOLUME 2
TEST WEEK 25/2—1/3
A decision was taken late last year [in planning for 2013] to abandon the cycle test
system in favour of a Test Week. There was an important reason for doing so: we
were over-assessing and placing great pressure on pupils and Staff alike. As a result,
Test Week will take place twice this year, in Term 1 and Term 3. Pupils must
note that some tests may be written during term time [and they count] as different
subjects have different assessment requirements.
During Test Week, pupils write TWO tests per day, attendance is compulsory [even
if not writing] and school ends at 13H00 [pupils must leave immediately and go
home to study]. The tests written during test week will count a major portion of the
term mark [depending on the weighting as per subject policy].
Reports will be issued on 27 and 28 March from 7 am—6 pm and 7am—2 pm respectively.
These dates are the last two dates of the term.

Raffle 2013 will be launched on Monday 11 February. Each pupil will receive a raffle
sheet and is requested to collect R 200 [20 tickets at R10 each]. MAJOR prizes are up
for grabs. Last year the prizes included plasma screen TVs, X-boxes, GHDs, blackberries
etc and totaled R 55 000!! This year we expect to raise R 200 000 to put towards
the R 100 000 we already have for a new 15-seater Toyota Quantum to be used for the
benefit of the pupils. Parents and pupils are urged to support this annual fundraising
drive. Parents will be pleased to hear that the outdoor sports arena is completed and
last year’s money was used to finance the project.

By now it is all over the news that female
pupils at schools within our areas of work
and home are being targeted by rapists.
Ms Otto sent out an email yesterday with
the details of the perpetrators who use a
chemical [possibly chloroform] to render
their victims unconscious and, when they
wake up, they realise that they have been
raped. It is gang-rape.
I implore ALL parents to have a serious
conversation with their children about this
very serious matter. It is tragic what happened
to the girls in the Grassy Park area.
Our thoughts go out to them.
DO NOT TAKE SAFETY FOR GRANTED.
WALK IN GROUPS AND BE ALERT AT
ALL TIMES. WE LIVE IN DANGEROUS
TIMES. BEING ALERT IS BEING SENSI-
BLE.
The last few weeks have started
particularly well. I must admit
that I am very pleased with
the ethos at the school. Pupils
seem motivated and well behaved
[as if they wouldn’t be],
Staff are committed [some say
they should be but I never take
it for granted] and, overall,
there is a pace which is engaging.
It is very pleasing to see.
Sad for me was the fact that
two cell phones have already
been stolen. There will be
thieves among us everywhere
but it saddens me to see the
property of others being disrespected
in this manner. Pupils
who steal face expulsion.
There is NO reason other than
sheer criminality at NHHS for
people to steal.
On a brighter note, the
school achieved 1st place in
Circuit 2 at the MSE Awards’
Ceremony held at the Cape
Academy of Maths, Science
and Technology last week.
We beat SP into 3rd place
and WGHS into 2nd place. It
was an honour receiving the
trophy on the school’s behalf.
Grade 9 parents are reminded
of the plenary next week
Wednesday. It is a meeting
for all grade 9 parents and
pupils. It starts at 18:30.

Test week is three weeks
away and pupils must spend
their weekends and evenings
preparing please. Be-
REST IN PEACE ABIGAIL
It was with great sadness that we
learnt of the passing of Abigail Nette,
Matric 2010 with a Bachelor’s pass.
Abigail had spina bifida throughout
her life. She passed away this morning
after a battle with meningitis. Abigail
would have turned 21 in 19 days time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the
Nette family. God has a new angel!
fore we know it the term will
be at an end.
As a last word, I am looking
into the possibility of a double
- storey Physical Sciences Laboratory
[one on bottom floor
and one on top floor] that will
need to be constructed. I am
also looking at a Minor Hall as
our current Hall is now too
small for our requirements and
an additional one is needed
given our 1005 pupils. I will
stretch the vision as far as it
can be stretched but need the
community’s assistance.
