All I have to say about Cinco 2009 is Wow!
Thanks to Barb Crowley and Steve Roach our co-chairs
for a truly great event. Now I want to thank all of you who
entered a vehicle in the show, autocrossed, and or attended
the function. Without you there would be no PCA-SAR
Cinco de Mayo concours and autocross. We had our largest
Concours within the past few years. Please take time to
review the results in this newsletter and our website.
As you review the results and reminisce about this year’s
Cinco event you might think of some great ideas on how
to improve our annual event. Well, now is your chance
to help improve next year’s event. Please email them to
me or better yet attend the Cinco De Mayo 2010 Strategy
Planning Meeting scheduled for 7 PM Tuesday, 9 June
2009 at my home. Please call me (465-4398) or send an
email (president@saz.pca.org) for directions to my home
if you would like to contribute to the 2010 Cinco early
planning meeting. Items on the agenda will include new
potential Concours and Award dinner location. No ideas or
topics are off the table so please help us make Cinco 2010
bigger and better than this year’s event.
For near future events your Board is working on a new
autocross venue for summer night time events and a short
driving tour culminating in a picnic on Mt Lemmon. For
the late fall, early winter time frame the board is looking
into a new Driver Education track that should be opening
in the Wilcox area. Check the newsletter and website for
latest information on upcoming events. If you have any
questions on future activities please don’t hesitate to talk to
me or any PCA-SAR board member.
Just another friendly reminder PCA Parade 2009 is in
Keystone Colorado. Registration has started and runs
until mid June. Check out the newsletter and website for
information on the PCA-SAR Overnight Parade 2009
driving tour. We will overnight in Chinle, Arizona and
if you can’t continue on to Parade at Keystone Colorado
spend the night and tour Canyon DeChelly the next day and
return to Tucson on your own. The hotel we are staying in
offers jeep tours of this magnificent canyon.
Some Assembly Required
Cinco 2009 Trophies
By Barb Crowley
As is SAR tradition, this year’s Cinco trophies
were not your run of the mill trophy. In fact, the
winners had to assemble it themselves! The trophy
was a puzzle of the event logo. Winners had to
put the puzzle together and place it into the frame
provided…or they could keep the puzzle out to play
with and put a photo of their car into the frame.
Either way, I hope you all enjoyed them.
Wash and Shine School
by Kathleen Kendler
On a not so great weather-wise Saturday, 28 March 2009,
thirty-one Porsche enthusiasts gathered to glean as much
information as possible on how to prepare for a “Wash-n-
Shine” event.
Our instructor, Larry Dennis, and his helpers Dennis and
Barb Crowley and Ken Hollett covered a lot of ground.
The first thing we were told is “Don’t enter the concours
level before doing a Wash-n-Shine.” The rationale behind
this is: most people are discouraged from participating in
future car show events if they start at the top level. You
cannot wash and dry your car and realistically expect no
deductions.
In a concours, your car is checked in the following
areas: exterior, interior, engine compartment, storage
compartment and the under carriage.
In a Wash-n-Shine, just the exterior and interior are
checked. This is less daunting for the novice car show
entrant. The Wash-n-Shine allows you to get your feet
wet, learn about the expectations of the judges and usually
allows you to pickup pointers on cleaning and knowing
your car better.
We were given tips on the types of cleaners and waxes
to use. I found the concept of using a product line as
opposed to various products randomly selected interesting.
Larry pointed out that manufacturers work at ensuring
their products do not work detrimentally with one
another. While discussing the fine points of clay barring,
Sean Martinez offered the top of his 951 as a hands on
demonstration to its effects. He had clay barred half of
the roof top. If you felt the untreated side it was rough
and gritty. The treated side was smooth. Actually feeling
this proved to me that all the time Jim spends on preparing
the car before I wash it is worth the effort. I could see the
difference on a sunny day but to actually have a car that sit
overnight with half the roof prepared drove the point home.
I’m all for clay barring when done properly- remember
plenty of lubricant. Clay bars remove the surface dirt that
gets imbedded in the top layer of your paint. Removing
this will help you prevent scratches in the paint.
Avoid petroleum based products when cleaning the car.
They leave a residue behind which the judges will notice.
Remember a Zone 8 car show is about cleanliness. Wipe
off any products you use so no film is present especially on
dash boards and tires. Many participants like 303 by 3-M.
We also had a hands on demonstration of this product.
Many students were impressed with the results.
Microfiber cloths were discussed and the participants
each had their favorites. These wonderfully soft cloths
allow you dust off the car without scratching it. Read
the recommended cleaning method for your cloth. It is
important to keep contaminants off the cloth. The grass
and other debris these cloths adhere to when dropped must
be removed prior to use and or laundering.
Another tidbit of useful information I garnered was to crack
The Other Side of the Track
By Rick Small -ZN Editor
Another month gone ‘round the bend? Where does the time
go, some of you know this better than I do. At the tender
age of nearly 50 (June 19 th for all your gifts and cards) I
am finding the days turn into weeks, turn into months and
years faster and faster.
I want to clarify some editorial matters this month. Firstly,
please remember that we print in Times New Roman 11
pt. This font is native to the Adobe program and has more
adaptability than most other fonts.
Secondly, the title of your article is in 14 pt and your
byline (your name) is 12 pt. The regular monthly articles
for Prez, membership and others does not have to be titled
each month as your header is already placed in the master
edition and along with a fancy graphic .
Additionally, it is difficult for the software if you cut and
paste web address links into your articles. They never
appear in the proper font and it takes a lot of effort to get
them to be legible and in the proper font.
I guess what I am really saying here is that at 50 ,( June
19 th for all your cards and gifts), I am seeing time race
by and I would rather be out there with you all driving
at breakneck but safe speeds than sitting here under the
deadline . Basically, I want to enjoy the fruits of your labor
which makes my job easier and me look better …. Which I
need because I am going to be fifty . . . . on June 19 th , (for
all of your cards and gifts). Did I get the point across?
Thank you all for all that you do to make our club a
success. I hope you will remember to keep those articles
and photos, (you thought I was going to say cards and
gifts), coming each and every month. The 20 th of each
month is the copy deadline and print deadline is the 25 th .
We combine issues in May/June and July. / August.

It’s Really About Fun, Isn’t It?
by Rink Reinking, Driving Events - Publicity and
Communications
Recently I’ve tried to convince you that it is easy to
participate in SAR’s driving events. I started by directing
you to our excellent web site (Thanks to Jill and Carl).
Back in January, I wrote about driver education events at
Arroyo Seco over in New Mexico, now you know about
those. I later went on at length about driver educationstyle
autocross events, so now you know about one other
major type of driving event that we do. Next, I outlined
three easy steps to get started. By now you can see that it’s
easy to get involved. So, why should you consider getting
involved?
Short answer: because it’s fun. Why? Well I’m not sure
that I know the answer to that. For me, it’s about learning
and I guess it’s also about the competition. I want to
go faster (for some reason). I need to figure out how to
go faster (for some reason). I need to practice different
approaches to improving. It’s a challenge for sure. I
mean that it’s not like other things that I do. It’s not like
going to the library, or going to our monthly meeting, even
though both may be fun. It’s not like taking out the trash
or raking leaves or painting the fence. Those may give a
certain sense of accomplishment, but I’m not sure I would
call them fun. No, there is something very twisted about a
driving event. It’s difficult, sometimes it’s cold and windy
and sometimes it’s hot and windy. Some days I might not
be on top of my game, perhaps not feeling 100% But, let
me strap on my helmet and buckle in and I’m good to go.
I accept the challenge. I work hard at it and that produces
some level of success. There are drivers who are faster
than I am, and I accept that. That doesn’t mean I won’t try
hard. It’s just fun. That’s why I do driving events... for the
fun of it.
At this point you might be thinking, “Why should I
consider that this might be a fun thing for me to do?
Because Rink says so? Nah, you need to think outside the
box here. Ask someone who’s not completely crazy. How
about asking a few of our women drivers? Okay ladies,
why do YOU do this? Why do you participate in driving
events? At this point I stopped writing and picked up the
telephone. Here’s what I heard-
“For stress relief and for the challenge.”
“I love driving. I like to do a females’ thing in a mans’
world.”
“If the guys can do it, so can I!”
“To learn to handle the Porsche better, drive fast and to
socialize with the people there”
“Track is better than street driving, a thrill, a challenge, test
of my skills, competition”
“Improve car control skills, drive hi-performance car w/o
tickets, common interest w/husband, Fun.”
“To better my high-speed driving and for fun.”
Or, maybe it’s about competition!
Looking at the responses to my questions, it’s apparent
that along with fun, the competition with others (including
a spouse!) may play a role. That’s not a bad thing.
Competition helps one set goals and motivates a person to
study and practice. As someone above pointed out, you can
drive your car on a track without fear of tickets. Both men and
women work at this and have fun doing it. You can improve
you car control skills, ones that you may never need on the
street... but you never know for sure. Thrilling? Yes it can be.
Challenging? Yes, in a good way.
One more line of thought. Our cars are precision made and
are capable of high performance. But to extract the upper
limits of that performance requires skill and knowledge. Who
can guess where this is going next? That’s right, you need to
participate in DE and Autocross events to safely hone those
skills and acquire that knowledge. It’s not only the safe way
but it’s certain you will succeed. Our driving instructors
are committed to teaching you how to succeed. And, you’ll
have fun doing it. I challenge you to come to one of these
events, even if you choose not to drive your car, and discover
the social part of driving events. There is plenty of action to
follow and lots to talk about. These are fun events. Try it...
you’ll like it.
Night Autocross Announcement.
The SAR driving events team is pleased to announce the
first official night autocross since the 2002 one. Why give
up autocross events after the May Cinco event? Just switch
to cooler night events. And, that’s exactly what our driving
events co-chairs Dave and Greg have in mind. Go to the
SAR website and sign up today for the June 6th event.
You’ll need to hustle to sign up in time to avoid the late fee,
the deadline is June 3. But, don’t forget that Jill and Carl
are an essential part of the team as well, They’ve put up
a couple of pages with video and photos that let you get a
sense of how much fun this is going to be. Cruise in for a
I’ve learned a thing or two over the years...
Trust isn’t something you can market or sell. It is an unspoken
quality you earn through actions and staying true to your word.
If you treat every customer’s car like it was your own, they will
appreciate the care and attention you’ve given.
For 22 years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to earning our customer’s
trust. They know they can count on us for quality service and
It Takes a Village
By Barb Crowley and Steve Roach
Cinco de Mayo Co-chairs
You all know by now that a puzzle was the theme of this
year’s Cinco de Mayo. Like any puzzle, it isn’t complete
until all the pieces are neatly in their place. Our Cinco
puzzle would never have been completed without all the
SAR members who gave their time and energy to make this
event the success it was. I’d like to acknowledge and thank
the many volunteers who “made the pieces fit”:
Ryan Volin and Graphic Impact for the logo artwork,
sponsor board, trophies, the programs and so much more
behind the scenes time and effort.
Jill Davis-Curtis and
Carl Curtis for your
countless hours spent
posting the Cinco
information and making
the online registration so easy. Thank you too for our
wonderful customized name tags with photos of our cars.
Even Kermit got one!
Dave Long for a terrific job with registration. Thanks to
his wife Sally also.
Kathleen Kendler
for keeping the entrant
spreadsheet for the concours and
autocross updated and accurate.
Also for heading the goody-bag-
stuffing team (Longs, Cloutiers,
and Kendlers), assisting Dave with registration, working
on the parking committee, and being registrar for the
autocross.
Larry Dennis for chairing a successful
and inspirational Wash and Shine School.
Porsche of Tucson for your continued support of our
region and this event. They provided the appetizers at the
Ashton’s Warm-up party.
Nena and Larry Ashton for hosting the Warm-up Party at
their lovely foothills home. The atmosphere, good friends,
good food and beverages set the weekend off to a GREAT
start…then they ended the event with the inaugural Cinco
Golf Tournament at Tucson Country Club.
Tom Sherman for his email updates to the SAR
membership when the national PCA and our website
went down. He kept us informed and his pleas for more
participation resulted in meeting our president’s goal of
14
having more cars entered and on the lawns of Tucson
Country Club.
Kelly Elliott and his parking team…Nancy Elliott, Rick
Barrett, Jim and Kathleen Kendler, and Jeff Gamble.
Ken Hollett for being in charge of
judging at the concours and presenting
the trophies.
All the concours judges who did such a remarkable
job. SAR judges were Peter Beahan, Ron Sable, Kevin
Purdy, Greg Roberstson, Ken Hollett, the Kendlers, a
score of judges from the Arizona Region, and Zone 8
Representative, Mike Dolphin. Jan Ramaker and Randy
Hannon judged the Display Class.
All the timers and runners on each judging team.
Richard Channel & Marjie Beahan – timers
John Obermeyer, Randy Hannon, Jan Ramaker, & Vicki
Channell - runners
Liz Isaak, Elizabeth Robertson, and Barb Radmacher
for scoring at the concours.
Rick Barrett for the beautiful slide show
presented at the banquet. Each trophy winning
car was shown on the screen as its owner
received his/her trophy.
Thanks to Dennis Crowley for assisting Rick.
The Cloutiers, Shermans, and Vecchiarellis for helping
set up before the banquet.
Carol Cloutier and Connie Sherman for their
extraordinary efforts to raise money for our two charities.
They were tireless and it paid off! Also thanks to Liz Isaak
who along with Carol and Connie helped put together raffle
baskets and boxes. Thank you to the sponsors. (see the list
elsewhere in the ZN and be sure to thank them personally
or by patronizing their businesses.) Thank you also to all
who bid on the silent auction items, the raffle, and the Bob
Bondurant drawing.
The Tucson Country Club and their staff for a job well
done and a memorable, tasty awards banquet.
The Humane Society of Tucson for the use of the tents on
concours day.
Dave Radmacher and his entire autocross team and
volunteers for yet another outstanding event. Thank you
Terry Prince for setting up the PA system.
John Obermeyer, SAR Treasurer, forkeeping the finances
straight. (also for his enthusiasm for his new-found
hobby…concours)
Jim Kendler, our omnipresent SAR president, for being
involved and helping with all aspects of the event. Your
energy and leadership is appreciated.
Last but not least, a big thank you to all the entrants for
participating in this year’s Cinco de Mayo. We hope
you enjoyed yourself and will join us again next year.
First Annual Cinco Golf Tournament
By Connie Sherman
The first annual golf tournament during our
Cinco Weekend Signature Event was held Sunday,
May 3 at the Tucson Country Club. The eight
founding members of this event (pictured above)
are Nena (chair) & Larry Ashton, Dennis Crowley,
Larry Dennis, Jeff Gamble, Dave Jackson, Connie
Sherman, and Tony Vecchiarelli.
The weather could not have been better, the course
was (as expected) in wonderful condition and the
golf and company were fantastic!! Everyone agreed
this should be an annual event in the future, and
we might even consider having another golf date
during the year on a less crowded weekend.
The Ashton’s were absolutely wonderful hosts,
showing us the course and helping us by providing
fore-caddies for both foursomes. Because this was
their home course, they removed themselves from
the main competition, but we would like to note
here that they were two of the three golfers that
came in under “net par.” It must also be noted that
the only two ladies (Nena & Connie) tied for lowest
net score (68) — Ladies, you ROCK!!
Winners of the Net Tournament were:
1 st Place – Connie Sherman
2 nd Place – Larry Dennis
3 rd Place – Jeff Gamble
Longest Drives – Dennis Crowley and Dave
Jackson
Closest to the Pin – Jeff Gamble and Larry Ashton
Cinco de Mayo Charity Events
By Carol Cloutier, PCA-SAR Charity Chair
To those of you who donated an item for the raffle
or the silent auction and to those of you who
purchased raffle tickets or bid on a silent auction
item, a great big Thank You! Connie Sherman and
I appreciate all you did to make this a special event
for our charities.
Your efforts raised $1,061 for the Tucson Arthritis
Support League and $2,670 for Arts Express Fine
Arts Youth Academy. Both of our charities help
students achieve their goals through scholarships.
Our dollars will make a difference in many lives.
The $1,075 raised from the Bob Bondurant raffle
will be divided between the charities. If you
haven’t heard, Larry Dennis was the winner of the
day at Bondurant.
A very special “Thank You” to Connie Sherman
for the great golf packages, artwork and dinning
packages she put together.
Cinco de Mayo 2009 Enthusiast Award
The SAR Cinco Chairs are proud to announce Jim
Kendler as the 2009 Cinco de Mayo Enthusiast
Award winner. Craig Robertson, Lee Cuevas,
and Rick Barrett placed second, third and fourth
respectively. The purpose of the Award is to
promote individual club member participation in
the two main Cinco de Mayo events (Concours &
Autocross). The point distribution ensures that
the winner will have to participate in both events
and encourages event volunteerism. Below are the
results.
Jim Kendler and Greg Robertson entered vehicles
that placed well in the Full Concours event and
were judges for the Street, Special Categories and
Un-restored Classes. Lee Cuevas entered his 944
in the Unrestored class and technically inspected
cars prior to the Cinco Autocross. Rick Barrett
entered his GT3 in the Wash Shine competition and
was on the parking team and was the Concours’
Photographer. All four gentlemen drove their
Porsches on Sunday at the autocross. The Board
says “Thank-You” to all Saturday and Sunday
volunteers. Without you there would be no CINCO.
Jim Kendler received the Cinco de Mayo 2009
Enthusiast Trophy and $100.00 PCA-SAR Driving
Gift Certificate. Greg Robertson will receive a
$75.00 PCA-SAR Driving Gift Certificate and Lee
Cuevas received a $50.00 PCA-SAR Driving Gift
Certificate for placing second and third.
The Board is looking forward to next year’s Cinco
15
de Mayo weekend (30 April-2 May 2010) and
encourages all club members to join in on the fun.
Maybe you will be next year’s winner.
Detailed information on scoring is on the PCA-
SAR website. If you have any questions about the
Award results feel free to contact Barb Crowley or
A down and dirty checklist provided by Barb Crowley
[CLEAN]:
C = checklist. Use the scoring sheet to prepare your car
L = lift. (floor mats, back covers that are used to protect
carpets, etc…)
E = everything/empty
A = always the judges fingers/hands are smaller/longer
than yours.
N = the number of items to clean before the event
exponentially increases as the time gets closer to the event
Tools that came with the car (upon initial purchase from the
factory) are subject to inspection.
Often overlooked areas:
Behind the pedals
Seat latches & seat belts (pull them out, make sure they are
clean)
Vents
Visors
Gear shift boot
Cleaning items:
Mailing labels for hard to reach lint
No alcohol based products on the plastic windows, do not
swirl when cleaning.
Seltzer water with lint free cloth on soft top convertibles for
spot removal. The sooner the better.
Like a Virgin…
Judged for the Very First Time
By John Obermeyer
In 2002, a friend of mine was driving to our workplace in
Seattle across the Mercer Island Bridge from Bellevue.
He knew that I wanted to buy his 1972 911 but he spotted
another 911 with a “for sale” sign and he followed it
through the streets of downtown Seattle to its nesting place
in a parking garage on the waterfront. The female driver
must have thought he was stalking her.
Later the same day, I walked two miles from our office to
that parking garage and fell in love in the dark (a good
environment for that). My first date with the black beauty
was driving her up the circular ramp to the top of the sixstory
garage. Did I negotiate the price? No. Did I have
her inspected? No. Did I tell my wife about my intended
purchase? No.
My affection for that car and my wife vacillated from
day to day, even when I learned of a sick engine and rust
damage (to the car).
Forward to Tucson 2009. There was a lot of hype about
displaying a car in the upcoming PCA-SAR Cinco de
Mayo Concours d’Elegance. (Actually, the concours was
on Dos de Mayo.) I wanted to keep my love affair a secret
and showed her off once at the Tubac Car Show…how
embarrassing among those really beautiful broads/cars. So
I doted on my black beauty and polished her often. I hoped
she liked the frequent massages.
Then there was the PCA-SAR Wash & Shine School. That
was a great experience with beautiful cars on display and
talented instructors explaining in detail how to prepare for
the entry level judged class of a Zone 8 concours. So is it
necessary to have the points on all four wheel emblems
pointing to the ground? Is it really necessary to take the
tic-tacs out of the glove box or to remove all grease from
the door jambs and wheel bearings? Now I am not a very
secure individual. In fact, for a date, I’d prepare a script.
But those great instructors (you know who you are) lit a
small spark of inspiration in me. I decided to go all the
way and prepare my 911 for its first judging.
With about 30 days to go, I prepared a checklist of 175
things to do to enter the Wash & Shine competition. My
hand wavered as I signed the check for the entry fee. But 18
confidence was building as day by day I took care of items
on the list. And then a disaster of sorts…you don’t really
want to enter the concours, do you? Why not take a trip
to Carolina to see your son? There went ten preparation
days! Now she won’t be ready. All of a sudden it was
Warm-up party day, and as a newly-formed single person,
I just had to go to that party. Confidence started to return
and I worked before and after the party on “the list.” Up
at 4am on concours day and I actually got finished with
134 of the 175 on my checklist. Communication from the
Crowley’s kept me going. I had been thinking of tanking
on the whole idea of concoursing. But early Saturday
morning, I drove the 45 miles from Oro Valley to the
Tucson Country Club and found that I had over two hours
to continue on my list.
Then I heard a roar- not like a 350 Chevy...but a very
distinct Italian sound. There was this executive-type guy
(Rick Barrrett) driving up in his blue Ferrari. I guess he
thought he was entering a “sound concours.” He would
have won easily. Now wait just a minute-a blue Ferrari?
Many Porsche’s are silver or red, Jaguars are green, and
Chevys are blue-but a blue Ferrari? As they often say…
”Ferraris are red!” Phil Hill and Enzo Ferrari must have
been tossing in their graves. Rick also had a cool GT-3.
If my confidence had been wavering, it took a giant leap
forward. If he can display a blue Ferrari, then maybe I
could do well.
With my car ready, or mostly ready, I felt like an American
idol. The Ferrari was in a special non-Porsche non-judged
display class…so I knew I would be fine. Judges Peter and
Michael looked over my car. Michael even took time to
have a long discussion with me about the rarity of my car
and its potential as a true show car.
This is all to say that my first concours was a terrific
experience. There were inspirational people like
Larry Dennis, the Crowley’s, Mike Dolphin (Zone 8
Representative) and in a strange way, Rick Barrett and
his Ferrari. There was expert and detailed instruction,
information and advice. It was just plain fun being with
other concours people at the event. I guess the next step
for me is “Street.” On the other hand…why not go for full
concours next time?
Note: John was rewarded for his efforts with a first place
trophy in his class. My reward was seeing the grin on his
face every time we passed by each other at the concours.
He really seemed to be enjoying himself and was glad he
had entered a judged class.
