ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING (APEL)
PgDip/MSc Biomedical Science Admissions Portfolio
The University of Ulster aims to provide teaching of the highest quality and encourage
learning that will meet the personal and occupational needs of society. To meet the
objectives of lifelong learning, widening participation and employability, students may be
considered for accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL).
An APEL claim can only be made on the basis that the learning outcomes (detailed in
(a) to (c) below, which are representative of a BSc Hons graduate in Biomedical
Science) have been met by the APEL applicant. A BSc Hons Biomedical Science
course normally provides opportunities for students to:
(a) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of biomedical science, human health
and disease.
(b) Develop core skills necessary to evaluate and to undertake research in the
biomedical sciences.
(c) Apply intellectual, practical, enterprise and personal skills (including
communication, teamwork, problem solving, decision making, initiative and
creativity) to enable effective life-long learning in biomedical sciences.
APEL claims must be evidenced in writing so please complete the boxes below, giving
details of your prior learning and relevant experience in the field of Biomedical Science
and outlining your continuous professional development (CPD) activities. Evidence of
these activities must be appended to this form.

To be consider for APEL, candidates should:
• Normally be registered biomedical scientists or equivalent with at least 10 years
relevant professional experience. Students with a degree considered comparable
to British Bachelor degree standard will be considered if they have at least 5 years
postgraduate experience.
• Provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or
equivalent)
• Provide TWO references from their place(s) of work
