want to start my article this month by
saying “thank you” to Gary Ottaviano
and Hal Tretbar for leading a fantastic
day tour to Parker Canyon Lake last
month. For all of you who attended, please
pass on your gratitude to Gary and Hal for
a wonderful Porsche day. For all of you
who missed it or have never visited the
lake, I recommend you take your favorite
motor vehicle and check out the canyon
on your own. It is truly a unique scenic
location in southern Arizona.
Now, I want to let you know about
our first overnight tour for 2010. The
Porsches-2-Prescott tour will depart Tucson
on Friday, May 21, for 3 days of Porsche
fun in the Prescott area. With temperatures
in the low 80s, you’ll enjoy a great
back-roads drive over some of the best
twisty roads in the state on your way to
Prescott!
Departure will be at 8:30 am. Plan to
meet at 8:15 am at the IHOP, 8445 N Cerius
Stravenue, Tucson, which is located at
the corner of Cortaro Farms Road and N.
Cerius—or come earlier and join us for
breakfast.
We will arrive in Prescott Friday after-

noon for a late check-in at the Prescott
Resort and Conference Center. Friday
night you have a choice of dinner at the
hotel on your own or joining the group for
dinner at one of the restaurants on Whiskey
Row. On Saturday we will participate
in an informal PCA-AZ Region Porsche car
show on the famous Courthouse Plaza.
Vote for the People’s Choice Trophy! You
can visit or hang out on the plaza. Afterwards,
we’ll take a little drive on one of
Prescott’s great Porsche roads! PCA-AZ
will also have some other activities
planned for those of you who may have
had enough driving for the day. For dinner
on Saturday you’ll enjoy a catered meal at
Prescott Vintage Motors, one of the finest
private car collections around. The collection
includes: Mario Andretti’s Indy car, a
Formula 1 Ferrari, a 1973 Porsche Carrera
RS, a Porsche Speedster, and a 1931 Packard!
The evening is open for your choice of
activities, from enjoying the great music
scene to visiting casinos or hanging out
with friends on Whiskey Row.
Sunday morning, you will have a
number of choices for breakfast on your
own. At 10 am we will head over a great

small band of SAR members recently spent some time
preparing an entry for The Ferry Porsche PCA Region of
the Year Award for the year 2009. A second document
provided a 2009 Public Service Award submission. That was a
very good year for us. We worked hard, played hard and we had a
lot of fun. Our entries documented our activities, growth, public
service, newsletter and website effectiveness. In addition, we
presented data on our participation in events outside our region,
charity contributions, and awards. In every category, the group
felt that we had something to offer and a chance at competing
with regions from across the country. We are unlikely to hear
about this until the results are announced at the July 2010 Parade
in St. Charles. Stay tuned for the results of this competition.
You may recall that our region has won other PCA National
awards in the past. We placed 3rd in the 2008 Public Service

and our newsletter (2003–Larry Dennis, 2004–Larry Dennis/
Leslie Kepner) garnered awards for SAR. We have also participated
and succeeded in the membership competition (2006–1st
Zone 8, 5th Nationally, 2008–1st Zone 8 & 7th Nationally). Surely
I've missed a few here. We're not sure if history will repeat for the
2009 submissions, but the group was willing to put in the effort
and wait to see what the judges think.
