SECTION III: THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT’S SUMMARY REPORT
Introduction
Over the past year the Department of Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Strategy
(MES) has revalidated and revised all of its courses to ensure that they incorporate
contemporary theory and practice and continue to meet the needs of students and
employers. The courses are also fully aligned with the vision of the University and the
Ulster Business School in having “a national and international reputation for
excellence, innovation and regional engagement”.
This vision, along with the recently published student’s charter, guides how we deal
with and value students, staff, business clients and other stakeholders, and is the
basis for designing our course provision. The quality of this provision is reflected in
the recent Times Higher Education Supplement teaching ratings, derived from the
National Student Survey (2009), which placed the BSc (Hons) Marketing programme
in second position in the UK for the subject of marketing in relation to student
satisfaction.
The Department has shown continued growth over the past year in terms of quality
and quantity in relation to all of its activities, including the three key areas of teaching
and learning, academic enterprise, and research. Growth indicators include
increased numbers of students, more successfully completed Knowledge Transfer
Partnerships, increased numbers of PhD students and increased research income
and publications.
The Department has an international reputation in marketing, entrepreneurship,
innovation management and strategic management. This is reflected in publications
and presentations at international research conferences (e.g. Academy of Marketing,
Academy of Management, International Small Business and Entrepreneurship
Conference). The Department has an extended international faculty which it draws
on to speak to students and to participate in collaborative research. The Department
has prestigious links with Babson College, USA, consistently rated as one of the top
five entrepreneurship schools in the world, and with St Joseph’s College USA, which
is a world leader in agri-food marketing. More recently the Department ran a
business policy course for leading Government policy makers from Basra, Iraq, to
guide the reconstruction process.
Research within the Department has led to publications in leading national and
international peer reviewed journals, books and Government reports, along with
increased PhD completions and research income. This document lists over 170
publications within the timeframe (a 25% increase on the previous figure for 2007/08)
showing the growing depth and scope of our research activity. This underpinning
research is critical to the success of the Department and in ensuring that students
receive research informed teaching. It ensures that staff are at the forefront of their
disciplines.
A key strength of the Department is staff competence in teaching and learning. In
addition to the evidence of esteem, referred to above, the portfolio of courses
7

continues to receive praise from students, organisations (all sectors) and other
stakeholders, as evidenced by the Times Higher Education survey recognition. The
Marketing Excellence Awards ceremony celebrates these achievement. Here,
leading organisations sponsor and present a range of prizes to students for scholarly
excellence. Regular innovations occur in teaching methods, including e-learning,
block teaching and podcasting. For example, staff have recently developed a number
of e-modules for the BSc (Hons) Business Studies part time programme. In a number
of cases these innovations have attracted special funding from bodies such as
HEFCE, InvestNI, the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL), and the
Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD).
In relation to regional engagement and involvement in academic enterprise and
consulting, the Department has a large and growing number of partnerships in this
area including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP’s) in the UK and Fusion
projects, associated with the Republic of Ireland. These activities make a contribution
to organisations, create employment for graduates and inform staff of leading
organisational practice. In addition, staff regularly carry out consulting assignments
for leading national and international organisations in all sectors and participate in a
number of influential Government and Industry committees and fora to inform policy
and practice (for example the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment
(DETI) Regional Innovation Strategy).
In summary, Department staff are committed to achieving excellence for its students,
business clients in organisations and other stakeholders, and to making a sustained
contribution to knowledge.
3.3 Course Developments
Postgraduate PgD/MSc Agri-food Business Development (Part-time)
The first student cohort of the PgD/MSc Agri-food Business Development programme
(partly funded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) graduated in
July 2009. On average, a third of students on this programme secure places through
the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning application process, as experienced
managers. Throughout the programme, students reported that it has been life
changing for them personally and professionally. During the academic year, students
of the MSc in Agri-Food Business Development programme completed an intensive
four-day programme on Entrepreneurial Transformation in Agri-Food Business at
Babson College, Boston. Through a challenging and interactive programme,
participants explored entrepreneurial transformation and leadership both within the
classroom setting and by visiting a range of US agri-food businesses including Agar
Supply, the largest independent food service distributor in New England, and Ocean
Spray Cranberries corporate head quarters in Massachusetts. The opportunity to
experience an entrepreneurial culture first hand has been motivational to participants
and will enhance the skill set and behaviour towards business development within
the Northern Ireland agri-food industry.
The programme continues to recruit across the food supply chain and has benefited
from this range of business perspectives and the synergy between graduates and
experienced managers. Through related sponsorship from Moy Park Ltd, the
13

international dimension to the programme continues, with input from visiting
Professors, such as Tom Kennedy (Delaware Valley College, Pennsylvania).
Collaboration with Dunnhumby / Kent Business School, which utilises data from the
Tesco Clubcard database, has also been employed within teaching and “live”
projects on the programme. In addition, Mr Paul Barbour (Kerry Foods) was awarded
the “Moy Park Prize” in 2009 for the top performing student.
Post- Graduate PgD/MSc Business Development and Innovation
The programme was successfully revalidated in March 2009 as part of the
Department’s suite of MSc programme. A new one year full time study mode has
been added and the course website and marketing materials have been fully
redeveloped. 10 new participants were recruited to the programme in the 2008/09
year. The Creativity in Management module led by Dr Michael Brennan included
seminars on Product Lifecycle Management from international expert Dr Michael
Grieves and Innovation Management from Professor David Hughes, University of
North Carolina. The International Competiveness Module led by Dr Adele Dunn
Included a study visit to Bombardier Belfast and guest lecture from David Crozier,
Lagan Technologies.
The Ulster-Babson Initiative, as part of the MSc, was successfully completed in May
2008. The initiative sponsored by the Department of Employment and Learning under
Peace II, was a joint venture between the University of Ulster and Babson College –
a leading provider of entrepreneurship programmes in the USA. Dr Adele Dunn took
on the role of Course Director of the programme in September 2007. The MSc
Business Development and Innovation (formerly MSc Innovation and
Entrepreneurship) was successfully re-launched in January 2008. The title was
revised to reflect the rich and sustained focus on business development in the
Department and also to facilitate wider market appeal. The re-launched programme
also includes a Post-Graduate Certificate exit route to further enhance the flexibility
of the programme. To mark the re-launch the Department hosted “The Great
Business Growth Debate” chaired by Professor John Simpson with a panel of
business leaders including; Ian Murphy, InvestNI, Philip Cassidy, GEM, Mark Ennis,
Airtricity and Professor David Carson. Throughout the year the course team further
developed linkages with Babson College. Professor Ed Marram delivered the
Business Opportunity module in March in Belfast while in April Dr Adele Dunn and Dr
Michael Brennan led a group of 20 students on a week long Business Development
study visit to Babson College. Their feedback which featured in the June Edition of
Ulster Business “Ulster-Babson Initiative Positions Local Entrepreneurs for Business
Growth” provided a strong endorsement for the programme. Participant feedback
from the initiative featured in the June (2008) Edition of Ulster Business “Ulster-
Babson Initiative Positions Local Entrepreneurs for Business Growth”. It provided a
strong endorsement for the programme and Dr Dunn and Dr Brennan are currently
piloting initiatives with InvestNI and the Association of Colleges Northern Ireland to
sustain this high value linkage with Babson College.
BSc (Hons) Marketing full and part-time (including Minor in Marketing)
The academic year commenced with a record 130 students enrolling on the full time
BSc (Hons) Marketing programme. During the 2008/2009 year, the strategic focus
was on ‘brand development”, ‘enhancing the student experience’ and ‘embracing the
University’s employability agenda’. This involved updating/revalidating the degree
programme itself; aiming to introduce an Associate Bachelor’s Award; revamping the
course promotional materials; the implementation of new recruitment strategies
(including an Information Evening); the piloting a new final year optional Career
Progression Skills module; the hosting of the Marketing Excellence Awards and the
pursuit of new sponsors; the formation of a new Student Retention Sub-committee;
the pursuit of new members for the Business Advisory Forum; and, the fostering of
deeper relationships with professional bodies. Forty seven students were on
industrial placement during the 2008/2009 academic year. Continuation of the Year 1
Tutor role coupled with smaller seminar classes during the academic year 2008-2009
meant that the academic and pastoral care devoted to new students on the
programme was enhanced. The result during the year 2007-2008 of the introduction
of this role meant that there was an increase in retention to 94% compared to 82% in
2006-2007.
BSc/BA (Hons) Business Studies part-time
The revised structure for the BSc Hons Business Studies programme was approved
and came into operation from Semester 2 08/09. The changes were widely
welcomed by the students and were supported by the both the External Examiners
and the Department’s Business Advisory Group. Further to the successful pilot in
online learning involving the Business Strategy module, seven additional modules
have been identified for inclusion in a suite of blended modules to be offered to the
part time Business Studies’ students. It is envisaged that the first of these blended
modules will be offered in semester 1 of the 09/10 academic year.
PGD/MSc Marketing (F/t & P/t)
Dr Danielle McCartan-Quinn took on the role of 14 full time and 10 part time students
were recruited in 2007/2008. A new external examiner, Mr Andrew Turnbull has
been appointed. The title of the programme has been changed with
‘Entrepreneurship’ being dropped; the decision being taken after consultation with the
course committee, the external examiner and the Department’s Industrial Advisory
Board. Initiatives to increase recruitment were undertaken throughout the year with
evidence of success for the 20008/09 intake. These included an alumni event with
guest speakers engaging in a debate format which was well received with graduates
from the early 1990’s attending.
Dr McCartan-Quinn recruited 16 full-time and 16 part-time students onto the MSc, in
2008/09. This represents an increase of 14% in full time and 60% in part time
students. Initiatives to increase recruitment were undertaken throughout the year.
15

3.4 Research Activity
Dr Gillian Armstrong has jointly supervised two PhD students to successful
completion in this academic year. Dr Lynsey Hollywood jointly examined dimensions
of consumer behaviour within the commodity liquid milk market; and Dr Geoff Simmon
explored the determinants of SME website optimisation within the food industry. A new
full-time PhD student, Mr Stephen Graham, has joined the department on a DEL
funded studentship (jointly supervised by Dr Gillian Armstrong and Dr Adele Dunn) and
is exploring value chain analysis within the poultry egg supply chain.
During 2008/09, the research seminar and workshop series led by Professor Audrey
Gilmore and Professor David Carson included:
- 8 th October 2008 – Dr. Paul Fifield, Marketing author, academic and Consultant.
- 24 th October, 2008 – Laurie Young, author and consultant.
- 17 th November 2008 – Dr. Robert Kozinets, York University, Toronto, Canada,
author, consultant and academic.
- 20 th November, 2008 – Professor John Stanton, St. Joseph’s University,
Philadelphia, USA, food marketing author and academic.
- 20 th March 2009 - Professor Wai-Sum Siu, Hong Kong Baptist University and St.
Edmund’s college, Cambridge University, Marketing author and academic.
- 12 th June 2009 – George Davey and Jo Davey (New South Wales, Australia), Craig
Plymesser (Chicago), Ian McDonald (Canada), International Dairy Industry experts.
The research seminars have generated a great deal of interest in the broad area of
marketing and management. Staff have benefited, not only from the stimulating
presentations, but have also had the opportunity to network with members of the
Academy of Marketing, Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Irish Marketing
Teachers Association. The series will be further extended during 2009/10.
Heather Farley and Carol Reid (along with Trevor Cadden, Department of
Management) have been successful in gaining approval as a supporting partner in a
collaborative BMAF project (led by Oxford Brookes University) for £35,000),
investigating the mentoring and support of new lecturing staff in UK institutions.
There are currently over 10 PhD students being supervised by Departmental staff.
3.5 Key Conferences Attended
Professor David Carson and Professor Audrey Gilmore attended the Academy of
Marking Conference, 2009.
Dr Geoff Simmons, Professor Pauric McGowan and Professor Rodney McAdam
attended the 31st ISBE Conference in Belfast, 2008, and the Irish Academy of
16

Management conference in Belfast. Professor McAdam also had has a joint paper
presented at the International Association for the Management of Technology
conference in Italy.
3.6 Acquisition of Grant Income
Professor Rodney McAdam was successful in obtaining funding for two collaborative
EU research projects worth 4.2m Euros.
Professor Ken O’Neill developed, with Professor Rodney McAdam, two new
Knowledge Transfer Programmes (KTPs) Premier Power (£80,000), and Tullyraine
Quarries (£80,000). He also developed a further KTP with Dean Coulter, Department
of Accounting, for the Colin Glen Trust (£80,000).
Two KTP contracts were successfully completed in 2008/09 - Dr Geoff Simmons and
Mrs Heather Farley with CM Machinery, Craigavon (£105,000) and Professor Ken
O’Neill and Professor Rodney McAdam with JPM Ltd, Dungiven (£80,000).
Dr Geoff Simmons and Mrs Edel O’Neill (Department of Management) commenced a
Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Woodlock Joinery based in Omagh, which will
last for two years (£80,000).
Dr Adele Dunn and Dr Michael Brennan secured funding of £32000 from InvestNI to
develop a business programme for high technology companies (including a visit to
Babson as part of the MES-Babson partnership).
3.7 Teaching and Learning
Improving and innovating in the area of Teaching and Learning is central to the
Department’s activities. Members of the Department have been exploring methods
to enhance the first year student experience and have piloted a new module on
“Personal Employability Skills” with the BSc (Hons) Marketing students. This module
aims to develop study skills, within a context of developing student employability. To
enhance the assessment process, a social interaction-based model was piloted
within this first year skills module, in collaboration with the Institute of Lifelong
Learning. Initial feedback and results from this pilot, which were presented by Dr
Gillian Armstrong and Dr Una McMahon-Beattie at the BMAF Annual Conference
2008, would suggest that staff and students have benefited from this intervention.
Carol Reid, Heather Farley, Dr Danielle McCartan-Quinn and Jim McGowan
successfully developed online modules for the Business Studies part-time degree.
The Department, liaising with the Careers Department and the Students Union,
organised two unique employability pilot schemes in the 2008/2009 academic year
for the BSc (Hons) Marketing degree. Both programmes will raise student awareness
of employability skills and enable students to better present these skills when seeking
industrial placements and other employment opportunities.
17

3.8 General Problems facing the Department
The Department is facing a range of issues over the next few years which increase
the importance of staff development and effective succession planning. Substantial
improvements in this situation have recently been achieved. There is a need to
continue to focus on improving first year retention in the BSc (Hons) Marketing
course by building on the improvements that have already been made.
In the current economic climate there is a need to continue to focus on employability
and career based modules and initiatives.
The Department must continue to ensure that the underpinning research activities
within the Department are sustained at both national and international levels.
3.9 Development in the coming Academic Year
There will be a major focus on student retention, especially for first year
undergraduates on the BSc (Hons) Marketing Degree.
In line with the University’s employability agenda, the Course Director’s liaison with
the Careers Department and the Students Union will enable BSc (Hons) Marketing
students to participate in the 2009/2010 academic year, in two unique employability
schemes which were piloted in 2008/2009. Both programmes will raise student
awareness of employability skills and enable them to better present these skills when
seeking industrial placements and other employment opportunities.
It is hoped to validate a new degree programme in Creative Enterprise within the
coming year. This course, which builds upon the enterprise and entrepreneurship
knowledge within the Department, will start recruiting for September 2010 entry.
