The National Weather <strong>Service</strong> and Corps of Engineers has developed the first <strong>AHPS</strong> in the West for the<br />

lower <strong>Boise</strong> <strong>River</strong> Basin. The <strong>AHPS</strong> provides flood forecasts, including online maps depicting inundation<br />

levels at 15 different flows. It greatly improves the understanding of flood risk for communities along<br />

the <strong>Boise</strong> <strong>River</strong> and has already led to discussions of the implications for property owners, emergency<br />

response, and local government. The purpose of this brown bag is to learn more about the scientific<br />

basis of the mapping, including the models and data on which they are based. For more information:<br />

Mr. Hobbs serves as a hydraulic engineer in the Hydrology Section, Hydrology and Hydraulics Branch of<br />

the Walla Walla District. From the <strong>Boise</strong> Outreach Office, Brandon is responsible for hydrologic and<br />

hydraulic modeling studies focusing primarily on Idaho, as well outreach duties and representing the<br />

Water Management Group in Idaho. Mr. Hobbs has deployed to the field twice in support of flood<br />

operations in Idaho. Prior to joining the Corps in 2010, Brandon worked for five years at Engineering<br />

Science Construction, PC, in <strong>Boise</strong> as a civil engineer. Mr. Hobbs holds a Masters Degree in Civil<br />

Engineering from The University of Iowa and a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Washington<br />

State University. Brandon enjoys playing ridiculous amounts of softball, as well has hiking, snowshoeing,<br />

and camping.<br />

Mr. Breidenbach is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) for the National Weather <strong>Service</strong><br />

Forecast office in <strong>Boise</strong> Idaho. Mr. Breidenbach is responsible for managing coordination, decision<br />

support, and outreach from the National Weather <strong>Service</strong> with emergency management and other<br />

partners in Southwestern Idaho and in Southeastern Oregon. Prior to becoming the WCM, Jay served as<br />

the Sr. Hydrologist for nearly a decade from 2001-2011 dealing with several major flood events which<br />

affected the State of Idaho. Jay has also worked in NOAA/NWS research laboratories at National<br />

Weather <strong>Service</strong> Headquarters in Silver Spring Maryland from 1990-2001, applying radar science to


severe weather and flood problems. Mr. Breidenbach holds a Master’s Degree in Meteorology from<br />

Florida State University. Jay enjoys Idaho’s great outdoors in his spare time including skiing, hiking and<br />

photography.<br />
